So I have been quite busy over the past 2 yrs painting armies for other people, and finally my schedule is one that I cannot take on new commissions anymore. So instead, I will be focusing on my Deamons once more! They have been sitting collecting dust for far too long, and this project is going to finally get some light of the abyss for a change..

To give some history.. I started with my Deamons back before the last book was released, played through the screams of cheese days, and up to just before 8th edition appeared. Not because it was getting the boot in 8th, but more that I wasn't playing much fantasy until just recently.

So I have a lot of partially painted, painted to different levels, and painting to different schemes in this army, that I hope to rectify over this year.

To give a sense of scale of what I am looking at.. I recently pulled out all the Resin lava bases that I purchased for this project ( far too long ago also ) and have begun to prep them for this army..

That is the long edge of a 6 foot table by the way.. just in case anyone was wondering.. smile.gif

With my goal of them to all look like this in the end..

As you can see.. I have a bit of work ahead of me here.. but thankfully I have come up with a decent recipe to use the airbrush on them instead..

Lava Base Walkthrough

I am hoping to get into this more over the coming months, currently I am finishing up my Night Goblins force for a demo game at the next convention in Turkey here, but will still be working on this meanwhile, and will be going full steam ahead come May on this project, where updates can be seen more frequently.. or at least I hope so smile.gif

Cheers..

Haha, yeah, I wouldn't exactly call 6 feet of lava bases the basics...

But looking forward to seeing how this goes.

Holy mother of the dark gods!! That is a LOT of bases!

If the models are as good as the bases, I'm going to have fun watching this plog! Can't wait to see some of the models painted up.

Now this looks very intresting indeed. By quick look there seems to be over 400 bases there which is a good "start" for an army *heh*.

Thanks guys.. and yes.. there are 400 25mm bases there to "start" this army off.. 35 Cav bases, 9 50mm bases, and a chariot base.. I also just ordered a few more 25mm's, some 40mm's also.

As far as the models go.. here is a test model I did while doing up a commission earlier last year..

I plan on adding more depth to it, and they are older versions of the Horror models. I want the horrors to be vibrant and bright.. but the bloodletters I am hoping to make them as dark and deep as the lava bases themselves.

@Noisy Assassin and DaemonReign.. the basics aspect of this blog is going back to the beginning and relearn how to paint certain aspects of the army, to make it really pop! Hopefully I can pull it off, and make them work.

I am also going to be trying to use the airbrush more on this army, to make it go faster, but also to make the transitions better and smoother.

Lets see how it goes wink.gif

Looking forward to see some airbrush techniques! I don't know anything about that. Do you use GW's airbrush, and does that work on small surfaces too?

Thanks God of War.. I don't use GW's.. mostly cause the cost of compressed air is extremely expensive in Turkey, and also cause it is crap wink.gif

I am using a Harder and Steenbeck 2 in 1 Infinity airbrush, with a 5 lt tank compressor.

As far as can it do small surfaces, indeed it can. I used it on the Horror shown above, and have just finished a Dark Elf army commission where it played a huge part. I got quite a lot of practice ( 300+ models worth ) with it, so am getting more comfortable with it.

Am actually looking forward to using it with the color recipes you have for your Bloodletters.. am planning to try to get similar results but hopefully in less time wink.gif

Lava bases were done with airbrush for example. It helped to make quick work of the textured lava areas around the stones there. If I were to have done that with a regular brush it would have taken me forever to get the paint to sit right on all the odd angles that exist there.

Hoping to get some work on these in the next couple of weeks. Just waiting for that next base order to arrive now, so that I can do a production line of painting on the bases.

Cheers

Did you make the bases yourself? If so, would you be willing to make some for me (just let me know the asking price and of course if you agree that I copy your bases!)?

Perhaps I would mount the old metal bloodletters I'm expecting on them ( and ask the airbrush from my wife for my birthday smile.gif , because handpainting those skulls is extremely time-consuming. Does such an airbrush cost a lot?

Actually I bought the bases from ebay a while ago. Cannot find them there at the moment, but they have their own website now, and I got back in touch with them there.

TC Painting

Paul, the guy whom I ordered from, is very patient and the prices are quite decent. 2 GBP for 10 25mm Lava bases.

As far as cost of Airbrushes go.. depends on what you want to do and how much you want to spend. I originally bought a real cheap one ( 20-30 gbp ) from ebay. It worked well as a starter and to get me to understand what I needed to know about airbrushing. But the Infinity one was more of a group bday/xmas present from parents/wife/in-laws.. if that gives you any indication as to its cost.

Best advice I can give, and have been given also.. get the best damn compressor you can afford, and get a cheap airbrush to begin with. So if you wreck it or mess it up, you didn't throw away potentially hundreds of $$$ on it.

Am sure, once you get one, 2 hrs per model will be more like 45 minutes per model wink.gif

Hope that helps!

Ok not the most productive post here, but while finishing off my current project of Night Goblins and waiting for the sun to leave my painting room, I worked on removing the slot pieces from some metal daemons, and drilling some holes into one of their feet for pinning.

user posted image

As you can see.. some OOP Slannesh that I picked up from a mate of mine quite a while ago. Was dirt dirt dirt cheap in comparison to what I am grabbing these days off ebay.

There is 1 Flesh hound there, but that is just to test how they fit on the cav bases I posted earlier.

Also some PB command models. I do not need this many, so many will find themselves in back ranks and what not, or potentially converted, but doubt that as they are metal and I am not sure what to replace them with.

Most require a dip to remove the paint from them still. They are all ( except daemonettes ) second hand from another local player.

On top of this, I ordered up a unit worth of
Blights from Heresy Miniatures. Since they have a sale on currently that if you buy 40 GBP worth of models get 10 GBP off.. so finally took the plunge and bought some. Always been a fan of them, and they will add some more variety to a unit that I think has to be dis-leveled and un-conformed by its very nature.

Hoping to get them primed up this week, and start to get some paint on them by weekend.

Cheers

Can't say I'm a fan of those old Daemonettes.. The claws are just *ugh* if you ask me.
On the other hand, I'm really jealous that you got so many of those OOP Plaguebearers. They're aging rather well to be honest.

@DaemonReign.. can't say that they are for everyone, but I love them. They remind me of when I first got into the gaming, and this is all we had for daemonettes.

@God of War.. indeed.. prepping is half the battle.. and I have plenty more metal models to prep, and bucket loads of plastics to get done still as well..

And to start off the painting..

user posted image

Started to get some priming of the main color onto the Daemonettes last night. Didn't have much time, and the paints were thicker than I had thought. So my airbrush had a bit of trouble with them. Need to thin them out further in the future.

Claws will be brighter pink, and skin will be much lighter in the end, but still have a pink/red huge to it. Will see how it comes out.

Hoping to get some decent progress on them over the week, but will need to paint up 10 bases for them to sit on also so.. will see..
