Thought I'd try something different from my old combat vamp list to play as change from my Daemons

Stripped back character load out using 2400pts South Coast GT rulespack ( UK )

Master Necro Lvl4.......Rod of flaming death
Vamp Lvl 2 BSB.........charmed shield

30 ghouls + ghast
25 Skellies FC.........Std of Discipline
3 x 5 dire Wolves

2 x 2 Bats
2 x 1 Spirit Hosts
2 x 6 Crypt Horrors
2 x 6 Vargheists

Mortis Engine

Vamps stay out of combat and let the big gribbly do the fighting with the ghouls and the chaff gets in the way

I know little about VC, so I can't say how effective this would be. What I can say is it would look great on the table!

If you have the models I would trade in your Ghouls for 2 units of either zombies or skellies, it will help you maximize your use of IoN and help break steadfast/tarpit and take Master of the Dead with your necro.
I dot believe Ghouls are a mainstay unit anymore I run mine as flankers in smaller units being almost as expensive as GG without the AR save really hurt them...
