Hey guys I was just wondering how fellow daemon players would feel about using either fenrisian wolves or dire wolves, painted red and such, as flesh hounds of khorne?

I would prefer these models to the actual ones both due to the aesthetics and price (Fenrisian wolves are 20 bucks cheaper).

Would i be able to pull this off? Would it require any conversions? What would you like to see for these models?

anyways thanks for the input!

I think Dire Wolves look far too undead to be Flesh Hounds. Fenrisian Wolves, on the other hand, seem perfect to me with the addition of a Collar of Khorne. Without that or some other conversion I think they'll just look like red wolves, not Flesh Hounds.

Chaos Warhounds are another good option.

I think that Fenrisian wolves with big ass bronze collars would look pretty slick.

I would go with the Fenrisian Wolves unless you have a Nurgle themed army (in which case Direwolves work pretty well). I would definitely add a collar, and maybe incorporate some extra symbols of Khorne, such as from Bloodletter sword hilts or the Bloodletter banner top.

If you want a non-traditional Khorne look you could consider doing some head swaps. I just discovered last night that those wolves look creepy as F*** with Ogre heads on them. It's almost a Japanese oni type look, and is actually rather Slaaneshi if you use the fat bellower head. Horror heads also look pretty darn good, giving a more Tzeentchian feel. I'm sure there are other options that would make them look less like wolves but still Khornate.

+1 for using Fenrisian Wolves..
Dire Wolves run the high risk of just being.. Dire Wolves.. (regardless of what you do with them!)

The Fenris-dogs, given the proper paintjob and additional details (collars, symbols etcetera), could work quite well - as the others are saying.

What's wrong with the official model anyway? *lol* Unless doing a 'specifically themed' army I'd just go with them. smile.gif

If it's cheaper hounds you are after and don't mind using non GW models, have a look at these. I have 6 that I use for my Flesh Hounds. They are from Game Zone and do a good job, in my opinion anyway, laugh.gif

Chaos Hounds

Otherwise yeah, the Fenrisian Wolves are pretty ace.

Iīve tried Dire wolves and I must say that I hated every little bit of them. Iīm a mediocre painter at best but I tried to make them work... Donīt like them at all. Chaos hounds on the other hand are ace Imo. I also like the older fleshhounds but I know many people donīt.

I like the big teethed fleshounds, that ones that actually look like dogs. In fact I have 10 of them here waiting for when I get time to pick up a paintbrush again.

Fenrisian wolves should work fine, paint scheme can go a long way but I would only take some minor conversion work to make them fit in better a khorne hounds

The reason I am not going with the official flesh hounds is 1) they are expensive and 2) I do not like the look of them I think they look more like dinosaurs than hounds.

So what I'm thinking I'll do is give the fenrisian wolves collars of khorne and then also maybe add some kind of armor plating (like just on the shoulders or something) to display a symbol of khorne etc. Alternatively I could file down an area so it looks shaved and then paint a khorne tattoo or something. I'm thinking a dark red fur color as well.

Thoughts on that?

Have about 20 of the original metal ones from a lot sale I picked up, and I also had done up the Dire Wolf conversions. I have to agree I am not the biggest fan of the Dire Wolf ones any more, but they still do the trick for coming in on a budget. Only thing I did was put toothpicks where a collar would normally go, add some fur over them, and painted the hollowed out interior of them like lava.

Fenrisian wolfs would look much better now though.. and probably much easier to convert as well!

Could you use the Bloodcrusher collars? Just cut them in half and glue around the neck?

easy route would be some green stuff fur around the necks with the tips of round toothpicks (pointy end sticking out) in a circle around it's neck.
