Hey all, my friend is starting a fantasy army and I promised to get him some tactics for wood elves. Anyone got some basic advice for him? Are games are going to be small, 1200 points or less. Just need to know what would be a good idea and what wouldn't be a good idea.
I saw the dryids??? (core tree people troops choice) and thought they looked pretty good. The main problem I saw was that they are skirmishes, but that seems more like a blessing than a burden in terms of resisting flaming.
Also, what would be a good hero choice for wood elves.
I have a feeling people are going to bring up how competitively they are not all that good because of the prominence of flaming. I'm my gaming group, we are not competitive, and I'm the only one who uses flaming (Flamers FTW)

Flame is not such a big issue for WE these days... the greatest problem is that WE dont have any good rank and file units, and skirmish is so lame now... also, cavalary got nerfed so they lose a good core unit and the great wild riders. On top of all, their 5+ ward save is only versus non-magical attacs, so it makes it useless against most opponents (a flaming, no AS, multiwound, magical dwarf cannon hitting my treeman lord worth 600 points is kinda sad to watch ) Anyway, i still love my wood elves because they are the most beautiful army of them all Now, a good start for WE would be buying some dryads and Glade Guard. Also, a must have for WE are Treekin, even in a low point game a unit of 6 is wonderful. Same counts for the Treeman. For a general, on low point games, the best option would be an Branchwraith or a mounted spellsinger (there is an nice combo of teleporting the unit of 6 treekin from one forest to another using the item on the spellsinger ). On some higher point games, only the character choices changes, everything else is basicly just taking MORE of those units i mentioned If you have any more questions, feel free to ask

From what I have heard other places, the reverse is true about the guard. Glade riders are popular and glade guard are iffy. I don't know anything at all about WE (yet) so bear with me.
In low points games, tree's are the best way to go correct? Or mostly trees? That sounds like my friend will be happy.
They create forests I have heard. is this possible in lower points games, because out usual set up doesn't combination a whole lot of forests (only recently did I find out that you actually choose the terrain... so next game I will have to try that :-))

Runidis is right, you need Treekins...And wich additionnal unit? Treekins. You can also use an anciant treeman with the...damn my book is in french,i dont know the exact words in english...lets call them "magic beings" that makes ennemies hit on 6 in duels. You should use your treekins and treemen to hold ennemies and win combats with dryads on the flank. Great eagles are very good for the low cost and the tactics you can make with them, like taking out warmachines. Wild riders arent that bad too for flanking. You could use Naestra and Arahan since they are soooo cool, they dont need to be on a forest dragon, they can be on a great eagle too. The wood elf items are very good(like a lot of elven items) and it is easy to make good combos to provide a good challenge. Glade guards are "okay" but they are nude and vulnerable, you must protect them. The mages have access to beast and life lores wich are very good, never use the book magic, its a Games-Workshop "brain fart" like the beastmen one. But if it is only for fun games,i suggest you avoid playing against skavens and daemons(dwarves too,but your ennemy could be friendly and not exploit your flaws) since they have magic attacks and it ignore all your defenses.
--------------------
Daemons,beastmen and dwarves.
If only games-workshop could be less greedy, there would be tons of players and it would be possible for us to run any type of army list...

Correct, but the sad thing is that only the Spelweavers (mage lords) can choose life/beasts... Other of the mages are allowed to use only loren magic An interesting combo i would suggest is with the unit of 6 treekin and a mounted mage. First, you deploy you "extra forest" near so you can place your treekin unit in there. After that, join the lvl2 spellsinger to that unit. The spellsinger should have an item called "Moonstone of the Hidden Ways", that allows you to teleport a whole unit to any other forest on the table in your movement phase. When you do that, you cast the 6th loren spell: allows you to move 2D6 inches towards the nearest enemy...and there you go, you have your death star unit in combat on turn 1, safe from all that shooting Hard to pull of, but reeeally interesting when it happens Just giving you some ideas for your friend's list

So, from what I am gather so far from my research, Woodelves are the Fantasy equivalent to Tau in 40k correct (for those who know what i am taking about)

Can't comment on that relationship really Certainly they have their shooty bits that are squishy in close combat a la tau but they do have some fairly solid close combat troops (dryads, treekin and to a lesser extent eternal gaurd)
But my last 40K game was a long time ago - for all that I think Tau are a cool.

It's pretty hypocritical to deride GW for valuing their pocketbooks over what's good for the growth of the hobby while you are buying on ebay and playing in your friendly local gaming store.

I've played wood elves once in this edition, and they seem to have really taken a hit. The best of their choices seem to be the treemonic legion though. The reason for this is that forest kin tend to be tougher in combat than regular wood elves. The treeman ancient is the best lord, in my opinion. The annoyance of nettlings spells doom to most enemy characters. In a smaller game, I actually still like the alter (as long as you can keep him out of line of sight long enough to effect the game.
The really huge problems that I noticed for the army is that now it's tough to play non engagement and their units are generally overpriced. When I tabled the wood elf army, I noticed that the new line of sight and terrain rules let me easily take out units that would give me fits in seventh. Along with that problem, the skirmishers could not march block effectively at all.
Bottom line is that it's too easy to bring wood elves to battle now, and the only units that seem good in combat are the trees. If your group is not too competitive, they might still be playable, but be aware that playing them might be a bit of an exercise in frustration now. In terms of pure theoryhammer though, they might be stronger in smaller games.
Since warhammer armies are expensive to collect and time consuming to paint, I really have to be honest with you. I don't play particularly nasty, and honestly sometimes don't try my hardest in games that are not close. In the game against the wood elves, I didn't play nasty and actively tried to pull back to make the game more interesting for my opponent. In spite of this, I tabled the wood elf army early in the game just by rolling dice and pushing models forward.
