Title: New Player what to buy...
Description: New player wanting to use specific units

Aéquitas - June 27, 2012 08:34 PM (GMT)
I'm a Skaven player that is looking into getting a 2nd army. I absolutely LOVE converting and painting.

Basicly I'm a sucker for eyecandy. If a unit is ugly but really good chances are quite big that I either make a killer conversion or just choose not to use the unit at all.
With Daemons this kinda puts me in a tough spot.

Been reading the army lists here and I notice that most tournament armylists are almost completely the same using fiends using furies using 2x bloodletters using lots of flamers etc.
I would like to have a list that is a bit different then those, use only units that I love the look off and still being semi competative.

Here is a rundown of units I like in looks:

Bloodletters
Daemonettes
Pink Horrors
Flamers (but only with an ace paint job, wouldn't mind an alternative good conversion for these)
Bloodcrushers
Flesh hounds (using a conversion from either the VC or Chaos Warrs)
Nurglings (altough I hate metal!)
Beast of Nurgle (altough I hate metal!)
Forge World Daemon Prince versions as Greater Daemons
Skulltaker
Changeling

Is there a way to make a decent list out of this? For example by taking:

Block of Bloodletters
Block of Daemonettes
2 small blocks of Flamers or 1 big one
Bloodcrushers either as a replacement for single fiends or as a small unit
Flesh Hounds
and a bunch of heralds?

I think such an army would look amazing on the table and that is one of the reasons I play.

My regular opponents in my gaming group are:

Player 1: Warriors of Chaos / Dwarves
Player 2: Ogres / Vampire Counts
Player 3: High Elves / ???? (most likely Lizardmen, maybe Empire)

Also as far as conversions go are there any good alternatives within the GW range for Fiend of Slaanesh (Chaos spawn, Khymera and Grotesque come to mind) or are there maybe good Conversion ideas out there? I was thinking about chaos horse + some kind of awesome daemon models torso if they really are a must have but am open to other ideas when it comes to converting. I do not want to use models from otehr manufacturers though seeing as I don't want to have an army that is not allowed on GW tournaments.

Thx for the help!

I think your preference for Daemonic aesthethics is definately wide enough to cover a well-rounded list. That is, of course, that at least one herald out of that bunch is a Tzeentch Herald with Master of Sorcery.

I assume you dislike the official Fiend models. You're not alone about that, while I must say personally I think they are totally fine. Finding a suitable alternative in the GW range is going to be difficult (assuming you're not making a very themed army) and even if looking at other manufacturers it usually comes down to a model 'becoming' a Fiend because you said so rather than people being able to look at it and instinctively gather that what it is..

The Forgeworld Daemon Princes are great as GDs for Fantasy. I went down that route myself, at least in part. :)

Okay cool. One problem solved a few more to go.

The Herald of Tzeentch is needed so I'm looking for alternative models and original conversions. I'm not really an expert on Tzeentch and how they should look but I noticed that some of the older Tzeentch models for the chaos warriors were actually shown as "faceless" or "cyclops"

Just look at the models for Tzeentch champion with book and tzeentch champion with 2 swords for example.

So this ofcourse got my conversion heart pumping and I found this beauty in the dark eldar section...

Now with some proper wings on its back (any plastic suggestions?), some more demonic arms with a nice looking book and a big staff with icon from the pink horror kit I think this could end up looking very cool.

What are your thoughts?

That looks like an awesome Tzerald base model. For wings I would probably go with the feathery ones from the Scourge kit.

Have you tried the warmaster greater daemon of tzeentch? it fits on the right base size and the model is fairly nice

Bear in mind though, if you play at GW stores, you wont be able to use non-GW models.

Has anyone used Tyranid models for Fiends?

I also *love* the idea of modding Bloodletters mounted on Flesh Hounds for Fiends, and will do that as well - can't remember who had that idea...

Love your ideas! Please keep posting pictures as you build your army!

I'm also thinking about modding Snotlings into my Nurglings (from my Warhammer Fantasy boxed set) - right now I'm using Spiders.

I Think Arkhan's Pet Pony has a great idea about using the Warmaster LoC as a Tzeentch Herald. Personally I converted a Slaanesh Herald out of the Warmaster Keeper which ought to be comparable in size:

@Grendel - While you're technically correct that Tyranids lend themselves well for making Fiend models (or indeed, Daemonic conversions in general) the problem - in my opinion - is that the models you end up with tend to look so very distinctly 'Tyranid:ish'.. :)

Yep I don't and never will use models from other companies because of the tournaments. I also dig the challenge of having to come up with smart conversions.

I have ordered the finecast model I posted at the start together with a variation of bits:

I ordered:

Harlequin Shadowseer (Finescast)x1
DE Scourge Feathered wings x3 (couldnt get them a piece sadly)
DE Scourge Bladed Spear Bits x2
DE Raider Trophy Spear with skulls bits x2
Empire Wizard with globe in hand bits x3
Empire Wizard flaming skull in hand bit x2

This should be enough to convert 2 Heralds of Tzeentch if I buy another Shadowseer later on.

Since I'm doing lavabases I think I will make this ones base almost completely magma with the herald levitating above the last small rock that has started sinking as well.

Working hard finishing my Skaven right now so I don't have to feel guilty when I start painting up my Daemons but I must say it's getting harder and harder. :D

In my sig you can find my Skaven diary btw for the people interested in my painting and conversion skills

Started working on the Tzeentch Herald so might as well post it here while I ask my next question.

K after the weekend I will be ordering about 100-150 euros of models. The new realeases threw a monkeywrench in my plans though so I would like to run them by you.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What I own right now:

1x Bloodthirster (Forgeworld unassembled)
1x Herald of Tzeentch (Wip)
1x Herald of Khorne (Forgeworld)

6x 10 Bloodletters
2x 10 Daemonettes
1x 3 Bloodcrushers
2x 5 Furies to be converted from Daemonettes and Tyranid Gargoyles
1x 5 Fleshhounds to be converted from 5 Dire hounds I got from a friend
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My idea is to make an army that consists of a mix of Khorne and Nurgle units. Love the new plastic plaguebearers and nurglings.
So what would be a good mix of units to buy?

3x 10 plaguebearers (or should I get 4?)
1x Nurgle Chaos Lord (to be my herald of nurgle)
1x Epidemius (to be my herald of nurgle on palanquin)
1x 3 Nurglings (or should I get 2?)

Not a big fan of the skysharks they might have to grow on me while I proxy them. I love bloodcrushers though so I'm considering getting a second box so if I would ever feel like it I could field a somewhat bigger unit of 5 or 6 at some point instead of using them as an alternative to fiends fielding them in units of 1.

So as a maybe I also have:
1x 3 Bloodcrushers

Advice would be welcome. Is this a decent mix of units to build some competative non etc 2400 points lists?

I just bought a box of Tyranid Raveners to use as Fiends. Just going to add Slaaneshi looking manes with greenstuff and a longer, more Slaaneshi looking tongue and call them good. I thought about greenstuffing some boobs on them but that just didn't work with the skeletal carapace.

They might still look like Tyranids, but that's still better than the GW Fiend models!

I think they all sound like good choices.

The plaguebearers, I would probably get 3 boxes, but it depends what you want the unit to achieve. With 30 and a palanquin herald you can probably take about 6 casualties even in a horde before losing attacks (4 for the palanquin, a couple more because I never seem to be able to get all 10 ranks in when I have a bloodletter horde.
As an anvil/attrition unit they will probably be 6 or 7 wide so you can still get away with 30.
If you want them as your main combat unit then 40 would make sense, but I think its a little over the top.

Nurglings, get 2 and see how you go. With a bloodthirster general you wont be casting a lot of plague wind and I doubt I would run more than 6 bases in a list under 3k.

Rageaholic - July 27, 2012 09:43 PM (GMT)
Those scourge wings look great on that model by the way.

Are the empire globe hands left or right?

Aéquitas - July 27, 2012 10:29 PM (GMT)
The Empire Globehand or the Flaming skull hand are both the right hand so they will be replacing the gun.

The swordstaff will go in the lefthand angled to point slightly outside so the staffpart will go behind his back under his wings.

BTW anyone have some good ideas for the colourscheme? It will be a loremaster of the lore of light ofcourse.

JonathanC - July 28, 2012 12:18 AM (GMT)
Blue and Pink I would have thought! ;)

I usually use my Plaguebearers in a unit of 21, so 2 boxes should be enough. If your interested in adding in the Palanquin then you may want a few more. Nurglings work well enough in units of 3, but if your planning to use Nurgle magic a lot you'll want as many as you can get your hands on!
