Title: Buying Demons
Description: Starting to collect Demons

Grendel - May 23, 2012 11:33 PM (GMT)
Hello fellow damned -

Here's the point of the post -
If you were to collect your dream Demon list, how many points and exactly what would you purchase?

The fluff - I've been playing WHFB since 2003, and have finally come around to playing Demons

I'm going to sell my extensive Empire army, and start to pick up Demons. ;)

So far I've been proxying Demons with my Wood Elves for a Sylvan Demon list - it's not a far stretch for Forest Spirits to be seen as Demons... using my Dragon as my BloodThirster, my Dryads as BloodLetters, etc.

But, there is a tournament coming up in the fall that is WYSIWYG.... *sigh*

So, that said - if I were to start collecting Demons after the Empire sale goes through, what is a comfortable amount of models - and what - would you get if you could do this all over?

How can I get the most bang for the buck, and what units would you prioritize first (i.e. Bloodletters...)

Also, how many would you get to be comfortable amount of troops?

I suppose I should even collect with a basic army list in mind.

Back to the first and final question - if you were to collect your dream Demon list, how many points and exactly what would you purchase?

I wouldn't do much differently if I got to do it again. haha

I think the 'standard' list that you'd be looking at would include something like this:

2x30 Bloodletters
Perhaps 20 Daemonettes
Infantry Heralds (one for each Core Unit)
From the special section you do want a couple of Nurgling bases, and FleshHounds are still all right.
Rare: Flamers, first of all, maybe 12 models to get you started. Bloodcrushers and Fiends come second and Beasts is something you'd get because you've got a Nurgle fetisch..

After that it's basically a question of getting some nice Lord-choices.

Anyway, I don't know if you've spotted it but I actually sent you a PM with regards to those Empire models you're selling. Would like to have a look at that if possible. :)

(One of my gaming-mates has a 10k legal Empire Army and I'm thinking you might have something I can surprice him with! hehe)

Priorities:

1 x big core block (40-strong to have the option). This could be any of the combat troops, so either Daemonettes, plaguebearers or bloodletters, as per your preferences.
2 x moderate support blocks (30-strong). As above, preferably a different unit to the primary block so you get some variety.

That will give you a great entry into the infantry options.

Ensure you have at least one Herald per infantry block (of the same God), so you can play around. Make sure one is convertable to a BSB. Get a tzeentch Herald even if you don't want to play Horrors, you'll need him for a scroll caddy in most armies.

I'd recommend at least 6 flamers for adding some support, likewise some furies and fiends.

Lastly, pick a greater daemon you like the look of, and buy him, paint him, and love him. Don't put him in every army list, but I expect you won't be able to help yourself for a couple of months anyway.

That should give you a solid start into your daemonic army, with enough there to vary up your lists between games so you get a good idea of what works, doesn't work, and what suits your playstyle best.

Enjoy

Ok, thanks for the replies!

So far I have the following: old old OOP Daemon Prince, and now 6 new finecast Flamers.

So that's a good... er... start.

For the tourney I'm preparing for, I'll additionally need:
 60 Bloodletters (2 units with full command)
 2 Heralds of Khorne - one of which is a BSB
 4 Fiends of Slaanesh
 10 Flesh Hounds

And I *should* experiment with more and more stuff...

What is the best way to go (most bang for bucks) about making the purchases?
Ebay?
Box Battalion?

E-bay (and second hand in general) is cheaper of course - problem is you may not find exactly what you're after right away, etcetera.

I'm also gonna be so bold as to reckomend that you check out the market-section of this site, or rather keep a Close Watch on it. You'll never see me Selling daemons there, but every so often someone else will.

You should also send a PM to Eastern Barbarian and tell him you're out to get lots of Daemons. He's helped me a lot with a bunch of various different things in the past.

The Boxed Battallian doesn't seem to suit your needs since all you get there is Bloodletters really.. If I were you I'd probably ending up buying most of that stuff directly from GW or some other distributor.. but I don't have the patience required to hang around e-bay.. haha

FYI - for those interested, I made my second purchase for my new incursion...

...Skulltaker (finecast) to use as one of my two Heralds.

Army now consists of:

Old old old Daemon prince, 6 Flamers, and Skulltaker.

I almost bought some Flesh Hounds, until I realized the price was not $14, but $41 for the box.
