Title: 2000pt Mono-Khorne army
Description: Picking up my Daemons again

Raedwald - May 13, 2012 06:40 PM (GMT)
Hi guys, first time poster on the forum, and after moving boxes around in preparation for moving house, I unearthed all of my Khorne daemons again, and got hit by a small wave of nostalgia. I stopped playing Warhammer over a year ago, (due to some qualms about GW's pricing), but it would be fun to start again, albeit with the models I currently own to save my wallet.

That being said, Khorne is my favourite god in the chaos pantheon, and so I have quite a few of those daemons. Here is my list attempting to be both fluffy and somewhat competitive based with what I have.

Bill the Bloodthirster - 490
Immortal fury
Armour of Khorne

Herald of Khorne -165
BsB
Armour of Khorne
Firestorm Blade

Herald of Khorne - 140
Armour of Khorne
Firestorm Blade

30 Bloodletters -390
Full Command

30 Bloodletters -390
Full Command

6 Flesh Hounds - 210

3x1 Bloodcrushers - 210

--------
1995

I have a forge world massive Bloodthirster I got as a present, but will probably use my Daemon Prince model for him, as he resembles him a bit.
The Bloodthirster will charge straight toward a unit of choice, and hopefully do what he does best, while the bloodletters with a Herald in each unit will advance up the centre of the table. The flesh hounds will attempt to flank a chosen unit to tear them up, and the singular bloodcrushers shall go hunting after Wizards to mitigate my lack of magic defence in the army.

It feels like this will be a fun list to try out against people, but any comments and criticism are welcome. Happy butchering.

I know it's a tough call to make, but given your lack of anything resembling 'a wizard' in this army I'd really concider giving the BT a 'Spellbreaker' for good measure. You're still going to be exposed in the opponant's magic phase, but having at least one dispel scroll on hand could actually be a saviour.

Then again, yeah I know, you're not going to want to drop either of the two gifts you already have listed for that BT so it's a hard choice to make.

So a Khorne Army like this is just gonna run at the enemy at full speed and hope to bludgeon everything in close combat. You have 2 'horde sized' BL-units which are 'good' but neither one of them has the numbers to soak shooting or attrition combat. I would seriously concider shifting things to so that one of them is bigger (toward 40 models) while the other one is more like 20 models - but I wouldn't be categorical about that..

3x1 Crushers is nice but I believe you'll do just as well with two of them really. That (already) would save you some points to beef up your center-line blocks I reckon.

All in all, by going monogod you're effectively "comping" yourself out of 3/4 of the Army Book, and operating at about 3/4 of the 'general power of Daemons' as a direct result. MonoKhorne as I assume you know from prior experience, is very straight-forward and I think it gets a bit dull after a couple of games (run forward, hope to weather the ranged crap coming at you, charge and hope to punch a whole!) of course there's always more nuances to a game but not that much more in this case.

Glad to see you coming back to the fold anyway. Well met!

EDIT
In a nutshell:
Drop the Armour of Khorne on the BT and take a Spellbreaker instead.
Drop the Firestorm Blades on the Heralds of Khorne (get more Bloodletters instead).
Probably drop one of the Crushers to save points for something else, like more Bloodletters..
I'd even be inclined to drop that 25pts BSB upgrade because let's face it: If you start losing combat with this army you're not gonna survive it either way as far as I am concerned. I personally think the BSB becomes "a must" at first when you're playing a bit bigger games with Daemons. That's just me though. :)

Thanks for the quick reply, and nice to meet you too. I had another variant of the army I could try, which uses some other gods' daemons (although I don't own any of the other gods' core unit daemons, so I can't use those, and niether do I own any flamers, as I had some bad experiences proxying them a few times, so I dislike them a bit, (but after reading people's ideas of them, I might test them out again).

Here is my revised list, mostly the same, but with almost all that I own;

Bill the Bloodthirster - 490
Immortal Fury
Armour of Khorne

Herald of Khorne -140
Armour of Khorne
Firestorm Blade

Herald of Tzeentch - 185
Master of sorcery (light)
Winged horror
BsB

The Masque - 90

40 Bloodletters - 535
Full Command
Icon of Endless War

20 Bloodletters - 270
Full Command

5 Flesh hounds - 175

2x1 Fiends of Slaanesh - 110

--------
1995 again

This is almost all that I own of Daemons, aside from the Bloodcrushers, but it served me very effectively in 7th ed. I'm unsure of what to do with the numbers of bloodletters in this list, since the unit of 20 will be left floundering around losing combats.

Would this list fare any better, or should I just buy some more bloodletters / other gods' core daemons? Thanks in advance for the advice.

It's quite simple really:
As soon as you add a Herald of Tzeentch with Master of Sorcery (pretty much any flavor of Lore will do - but Light, Shadow, Life or mostly taken) the general 'competativeness' of your list goes up many times.

In fact, you could have kept the first list you posted and simply add a HoT and *you're done* haha.

I think this second list of yours is looking much stronger, generally speaking. You're right that those 20 Bloodletters will have to be sent in with a little tact (like making sure they flank charge whatever the big horde of 'Letters are fighting) - and getting Birona's Timewarp off in a Key moment will be very important too.

Still, having only 30 letters in a unit makes for too much a bargain for the enemy to shoot at. :)
