Title: Speed Painting Daemonettes Tutorial
Byronic - May 7, 2012 05:04 PM (GMT)
Hello all, this is my first post here so please be gentle!
I'm in the process of trying to paint a full 2400point daemon army in less than 7 days, and I've been taking pictures along the way with some units with the intent of writing tutorials. These daemonettes were painted in one sitting in about 9-10 hours, which could be useful for someone if they have a tournament coming up etc :)
Anyway I've written a tutorial
>>>>here<<<< describing how I did it.
Please let me know what you think, I've found that for the best feedback in the past the army-specific forums have been the best which is why I registered :) If you have any questions just let me know here and I'll get back to you. There's no need to register on the original forum.
Here's a picture of the finished unit:

That's F-ing impressive if it was really done in 9-10 hours dude..
Welcome to the forum and looking forward to following this plog!

Really nicely done! The two 'nettes making out on the unit filler is very Slaaneshy. Great tutorial. I've always thought about trying the "pre-shade" using the white primer over black method.

Cheers bud, I've got a few pictures of the bloodletters I did on my camera as well, it's not a perfect step-by step, but I should be able to salvage a semi-coherent tutorial out of it!

They're slaanesh, whether marching into battle or not;there's always time for a bit of kissing! I couldn't resist, the poses were perfect :D
Pre-shading is a god send bud, I use it on about 95%of models I paint, it's amazing!
I'll get the Bletter tutorial done fairly soon guys, thank you again for the kind words!
God of war - May 8, 2012 10:21 AM (GMT)
Nicely done, and thx for the tutorial!

Cheers, not at all bud :)
It's not daemon-y but I have done another tutorial, this time it's on how to sculpt scale mail, I'll be trying to improve or at least re-remember sculpting over the next couple of weeks, this is the beginning of it :)
How to Sculpt Scale MailAs ever all comments are criticisms are welcome!

Great tutorials. Thanks for the links. I like the colours you have used on your daemonettes, I'll definitely revisit this when it comes time to paint mine and make note on the colours you have used.

Thanks very much deathphoenix, I hope it's useful!
I've not had time for the deamons recently, but I have squeezed in a quick
Magnetising Units and
Painting Bases tutorial, give them a look if you fancy.
Hulabell - May 25, 2012 06:42 AM (GMT)
Fantatisc tutorials, very easy to understand, i'll be giving these a go!
deathphoenix - May 25, 2012 07:02 AM (GMT)
+1. The base tutorial was excellent. I'm definitely going to use some of those ideas.

Thanks very much guys :) I do these to try and help people out so it's really nice when people let me know they've been helpful!
Here's my latest one:
A step by step guide to painting a dreadstone blight I love scenery and this is one of the best kits I've encountered I must say! It's nice and cheap as well :)
Here's a WiP shot from it:

Again I've not had any more time for the daemons, I've got billy the bloodthirster sitting there asking for paint as well :(.
Thanks again for the responses, makes my day when it turns out the hours I put in haven't been wasted!

Well it's been a while since I've had any Daemon updates, I haven't forgotten our evil little beasts though; here's some pictures :)
(each is a link to my daemon gallery, where there's a couple more shots).

I'll be doing some reviews/tutorials for them soon, however before I write anything properly I may as well say that all of these kits are absolutely brilliant from a painting and modelling perspective, none of them goes under 9/10 for me.
JonathanC - August 7, 2012 11:05 PM (GMT)
These all look great Byronic, particularly the chariot which looks a lot better than the GW painted one! I just hope mine turns out half as good when I finally get around to painting it (and assembling it. And buying it for that matter.....).

Cheers Jonathan :) I used exactly the same technique as I used for my daemonette tutorial linked in the first post if that's of any use.
Feel free to buy them from Element Games where the images are hosted, I hear they're the best online retailer in the UK!... Sorry, couldn't help myself :). We've got them at 20%off for the next few days, so they're pretty cheap. Gratuitous plug over   .
I am currently working on a tutorial for the screamers and nurglings, once one of the is done I'll paint the plaguebearers, somehow I have to fit this all in around painting 3000points of necrons for a client, the world is a busy place at the moment!
I'll post up links to the tutorials/reviews as soon as they're up, cheers for looking guys, I'll probably also make a new post, as you can't change thread titles on this forum, which is a bit annoying as mine is slightly out of date :)

Byronic - August 8, 2012 01:54 PM (GMT)
I'll have a tutorial up for the screamers as well shortly
For now here's the nurgling tutorial

nurgling and the
screamer kits on my blog

never-leave-these-forums! :P
i am new to the airbrush thing and these tutorials have helped me out quite a bit on techniques :D
thanks ever so much for sharing these tutorials and keep up the awsome work! :P
eastern barbarian - August 9, 2012 05:59 PM (GMT)
ha! Very nice and effective indeed!
Grisnik - August 10, 2012 02:11 PM (GMT)
Agreed.. have checked and registered to your blog/forum.. many great tips and tricks over there. Will be implementing some of them soon I hope! great stuff!
Byronic - August 15, 2012 08:15 PM (GMT)
Thank you very much for the kind words guys! I do the tutorials in the hope that they'll be of use to some painters out there (who can learn from all of the thousands of mistakes I make :)). So if you've enjoyed them they've done their job! If you have any friends who may enjoy them on other forums etc please feel free to link them or whatever - the more the merrier :)
Plaguebearer updates will be coming soon!
Byronic - August 20, 2012 08:06 PM (GMT)
And just for the Plague-God lovers out there :)
When I can squeeze an hour or two I'll get tutorials written up for both these and the screamers:

My Daemons got onto the GW blog today, yay!
JonathanC - August 22, 2012 03:11 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I saw the Daemons in the GW blog and thought "they look familiar...." Congrats on getting your models on there!
Also - nice Plaguebearers. :)

Cheers Jonathan!
I've written a new tutoral, '
Speed Basing Armies' in which I cover basic use of pigments for getting fast effective results, let me know if you have any thoughts.

Also I've been lazy with posting up WiP pictures recently, here's a bit of Khorne progress on my desk, on the left will be a unit filler for bloodletters), I always like seeing what processes people use when they paint so here's a look at mine.
Hulabell - August 22, 2012 07:33 PM (GMT)
Was nice to see your stuff over on the GW blog Byron! :D
mad lamb - August 23, 2012 07:14 AM (GMT)
Great stuff. Wonderfull!
I'm realy tempted to buy airbrush... Cause I don't have much more time to paint and "glaze and blend" each foot model for 5 hours :P
So how much time it takes to prepare and use and clean airbrush for say 10 models unit? I reckon it takes time to change color and stuff (clean it, change cloro, aisrbrush it, clean it again...)
Kalandros Shadowsun - August 23, 2012 09:00 AM (GMT)
Think you can get us a more detailed look on the new Seeker chariot as to how you painted up the platform, blades and the seekers pulling it? O:

Really like the blue on ure screamers, what colors did u use for em?
Byronic - August 31, 2012 11:37 AM (GMT)
I can't work out how to quote multiple posts sorry guys, eurgh technology! Also sorry for the delayed response, I've been incredibly busy finishing a Necron army and managing the Dark Vengeance release, things should calm down a little now though.
@Hulabell
Cheers, I've been so busy with the store I've not had much time to paint in the past few months, and hadn't sent anything in to them, absolutely made my day to see them up there though :)
@Mad Lamb
Cheers :) They're lovely models.
Barely any time at all mate, there's a lot of (absolutely pointless and uninformed) scaremongering on the internet about the faff of cleaning airbrush etc, but it's no more than if you take care of your normal brushes really, I flush it out between colours, and give it a decent clean every couple of days. Every friday it and my normal brushes get the proper treatment but that doesn't take too long, and individually cleaning the standard brushes properly takes longer.
I use Isopropanol (that will be spelled incorrectly, google it:)) which is a 99%proof alcohol, and that cleans it really efficiently and well.
A unit of 20-25 takes me a (very long) day, all done in one sitting usually, cleaning can't take more than 5-20mins within that.
@kalandros, it's exactly the same as my Daeonette tutorial from a while back (first post), I just moved around where the pinks and purples are.
As far as the chariot goes it was done in the same way but basically with deeper shadows:
Basecoat: Sprayed army painter 'plate mail metal'
Wash: Leviathan purple with liche purple(only a very small amount of liche), all over,
Shading: then I added black wash and a dot of black paint to the above mix and went back into the recesses, adding more and doing a smaller section each time.
Finishing wash: Original wash all over again
Final drybrush Highlight: The army painter plate mail metal (exact match to spray) all over, barely any on the brush, take your time.
@Zack just for you mate :)
Painting Screamers tutorial here's another for how I painted these chaps.

Love all the tutorials so far, definitely makes me want to purchase an air brush. I really like the the Nurgling tutorial as I just got 10 more and they are all going to need some love once I am done with my horrors.

I'm glad they're making good reading for some people, it's always great to get feedback! I love those cheeky little gore covered chaps :) the models are great to paint, just made for washes.
@Kalandros no worries mate, hope it's of some use!
I have written another tutorial, which is my take on
How to paint rusty/chipped metal
I'll also be getting a plaguebearer tutorial out some time soon hopefully, it's quite similar to the nurglings but it has been asked for and I've got the pictures so I've got no excuse really!
Byronic - September 13, 2012 08:33 PM (GMT)
I have done another tutorial, this one is a fairly big one - a step by step of how I painted my plaguebearers, it's fairly similar to the nurgling one but a lot a few people asked how I did them, and I had the pictures so it would have been pretty rude not to oblige!

Colonel - September 13, 2012 09:56 PM (GMT)
Great stuff, and looks like you are using an airbrush for base colors which is cool.
What seriously bugs me, is the brown edging on the grey bases! My eyes are drawn to it. Black edges I could accept and ignore.
dutcher - September 14, 2012 12:37 AM (GMT)
thank you for all the tutorials. they will really come in handy soon. :D
would love to see a bloodletter tutorial too, if you ever made one.

Very good point Colonel, the rest of the army has them, so I didn't have much of an option, I think you're right though!
@Dutcher, I'll see if I've got any pictures around for them, it was about a year ago, but I may have enough to write a tutorial, give me a prod if I haven't got back to you within the next few days :).
Apologies for the lack of updates recently: part of what's kept me busy for the last month or so has been finishing off my own army (finally!). So I could attend a couple of tournaments, one of which I was lucky enough to win best painted, which I was really pleased with!

I've written a little
How to Pin Models toturial guys, nothing majorly exciting, but something that I use almost daily, so maybe it'll be of some use to people.

How's everyone enjoying the new Daemon update? I saw loads of screamers at the last fantasy tournament I was at, and quite a lot of soulgrinders as well!
DaemonReign - October 14, 2012 11:12 PM (GMT)
Sweet-looking Ogre Army!
Congrats to the citation for that one. :)
Didn't enjoy the update personally as I thought it was a predominantly tacky ordeal, but I'm not surpriced to hear people are using Screamers and Grinders.
I did buy some Plastic PBs, the Scribes, and a couple of Slaanesh Chariots though, which hopefully will pop up in my own plog in due time. :)
EDIT
Just spotted those PBs you painted upthread too. Very nice indeed!

Another tutorial is up guys:

As ever any feedback or requests for other tutorials let me know.
