Ok, here's is a small writeup of the Lost Legion hosted event that i took
this list to. the rounds were lightning fast (only 2 hours or so for 2.5k games), so i didn't have enough time to take any pictures to do my usual video reports.
Game #1 was against Tomasz and his wood elves. he is a very skilled general, has played for team poland in the ETC and took best general at a 60 player GT in the prior month with his wood elves. bad draw for first round.
His list consisted of:
Highborn
Level 4 beasts
---- one of these had the rhymers harp, the other had MR 3 and he kept them in the same unit, so that it would have a 2++ vs magic
BSB with a bow that let him shoot 3-4 times
2x8 dryads
14 glade guard with flaming banner
2x10 glade guard
2x5 glade riders
2 eagles
3 warhawk riders
treeman
6 waywatchers
9 wardancers
The table had a tower on the left and a river on the right with 2 bridges, with a few forests and hills. i deployed a fiend and a unit of nurglings on the right as drops and put one bloodletter block in the center, one on my left and deployed big papa, the flamers, and my level 2 around them so i could advance under the safety of pha's protection. there where 3 objectives on the table, one dead center, and two 18" to the left and right respectively, worth 200 vps each.
WE T1
very uneventful, he shuffled around, and picked on my rightmost fiend with his waywatchers. he sent one unit of dryads to get my nurglings on the left that i put a little too far forward.
DoC T1
I advance quickly, hoping to get my hordes in a position to charge something before i take heavy losses. when he saw me deploy heavy on the left objectives, he deployed in the opposite corner, meaning the building would break up my formation and give him an opportunity to shoot my hordes off one at a time. i move big papa so behind the building (out of LOS of his level 4) so he can't get amber speared. i cast pha's which will help, and try for plague wind on his wardancers but it is scrolled. my rightmost fiend (on his last wound) makes a desperate charge into the waywatchers and kills 3, breaking them but not catching them (even with musk and swiftstride). he'll die to the treeman strangleroot the next turn.
WE T2
dryads on the right charge my nurglings and he does the double-eagle-charge-fail-trick on my center bloodletters. i had my furies in the area to counter this but i miscalculated and had them in the eagles' front arc instead of flank. Doh! he moves his other dryads up aggressively to use the building as protection from my charges. in shooting, he picks off my right fiend with the treeman and shoots my center bloodletters down to just above half strength (even with pha's). in combat his dryad squish the nurglins and reform towards the center of the field. my BSB's bloodletter unit is advancing towards them quickly.
DoC T2
my center bloodletters have no choice but to charge the eagles so he flees with both and so i auto fail (popping my icon of endless war), i hate that trick. BSB's unit opts for a long charge on the dryads. making it will get me some easy (and hard to come by) points, failing will land me on the leftmost objective where i plan to sit him for the game since they won't be able to catch anything. i move the flamers and my level 2 into the building to hopefully get some good shots on his dryads. both units are in the vicinity so the added pressure will be nice. i poke big papa out from behind the building to do some casting. at this point, i have both units of bloodletters on the objectives. i'm hoping he'll leave me some charges next turn but he's too good for that. WE play a lot like my slaanesh army, the only charges you're going to get are the ones he leaves you. so shooting is poor, only a couple wounds on the dryads and magic as well, rhymers harp and MR3 protect his big glade guard unit nicely from the plague magic. pha's goes up again but i have to trade all of my level 2's magic levels for it.
WE T3
he scatters to the winds, surgically moving everything out of my charge arcs or far enough to make me need 11's and 12's to connect. he rallies one eagle and the other continues to flee towards his general and level 4's unit hidden in a wood near the board edge of the center of the table. his bsb hops from glade guard to the wardancers after they move behind my center bloodletters. he brings his glade riders and warhawks over from far table edge to exploit any opening i leave him. his treeman continues on the far right to chase my nurglings over there. on the left, i've hemmed in the far unit of dryads with my BSB's unit and general so they will die next turn. the other dryad unit conga lines to stall my center bloodletters and redirect them into the building. in magic, he throws an amber spear at my general but it gets scrolled. he then shoots down half of my center unit of bloodletters, taking their numbers critically low. they'll be easy prey for his glade riders and war dancers at this point.
DoC T3
so the situation is dangerous at this point. i charge the BSB into the leftmost dryads and it connects. i then take my general around the tower into the rear of the dryads that are blocking the center bloodetters. this shrinks their formation, allowing me to pull the flamers out of the tower and swift reform the remnants of my bloodletter horde into the safety inside. my plan is to hold the left objective with the second bloodletter horde and keep my general lurking in cover near the center objective. late game i'll pop out to claim it, and that will leave me with a minor win if i can manage to not give anything else up. in magic, big papa hits the wardancers with a plague wind. i only get one base (which he kills easily), but the casualties force the wardancers to withdraw to safety. in combat, i collect my first points and the BSB kills one dryad unit, the general kills the other. unfortunately, big papa needed to chase them down to get them, leaving him somewhat vulnerable.
WE T4
he recovers from the loss of the dryads quickly and maneuvers his army out of all charge arcs but leaves himself favorable lanes of fire to my general. he uses the hail of doom and his other shooting to kill my remaing fiend and the furies who were lurking in a wood near the tower. his treeman continues to play with my nurglings, they are the only units on the far right. i'm castling defensively on the left, and he's taking the center with his glade guard units and riders. he sends his eagles to circle me like vultures looking for a weakness (to get my level 2 if he should leave the unit for example). he amber spears big papa but it is dispelled.
DoC T4
no charges. big papa withdraws to the (relative) safety of the tree line after taking several wounds from arrows. he plans to lurk in the area and cast, with enough movement to steal the center objective on the last turn. he kills some elves with plague magic but nothing to get any points. the flamers likewise kill some elves but also do not net any points. i bring the BSB's unit around to protect the flamers should he charge them with his glade rider units. with all of my small units gone, i'm looking at a minor loss unless i hold 2 objectives.
WE T5
more of the same. with all of my small units gone and the GUO withdrawing, Tomasz does likewise and stands off to shoot some more. he withdraws his previous aggressive moves with the warhawks and glade riders knowing that he is pretty secure in victory. the treeman contines to play with nurglings and squishes them this turn. amber spear at the GUO gets dispelled.
DoC T5
no charges. more consolidation from me with flamers and GUO focusing shooting and magic to hopefully pick off some juicy warhawk rider pts but it goes poorly and gets me nothing. i kill an eagle that causes several panic tests but he weathers it nicely with his highborn and BSB lurking close. big papa is wounded but i'm pretty comfortable that he'll make it through one more turn of shooting nestled safely in his wood, ready to steal the center objective. it has been surrounded by glade riders at this point but he'll be able to come in and clear it with his breath weapon and call it a day. i also pull the bloodletters out of the building thinking that the extra target will help take some of the shooting off the GUO.
WE T6
Tomasz really has nothing to do except throw an amber spear at the GUO, which he IF's and i fail my ward and he rolls up 6 wounds, exactly what was needed to kill the big guy. with the last threat to his position removed, he moves the treeman up to take the far right (almost forgotten) objective and goes to the bar to get a beer. j/k, but he may as well have, lol.
DoC T6
no charges. i make some small moves to ensure the last objective is mine, but with the loss of the GUO, the game went from a narrow loss to a big one. the flamers try for some last shooting points but get nothing. 13-3 win to tomasz.
so this would have been a much easier matchup with my slaanesh/seeker list, but the double letter hordes really struggles vs a good WE player. i wasn't able to get across the table in good enough shape to press the attack and he was amply equipped (with MR) to survive my plague magic. good play by tomasz, you know the other guy is a sharp player if you feel like you're being dissected the whole time. stay tuned for game #2 vs empire!
