Title: Need help beating Tau!
Description: Tactica and unit help
Chaos4reaL - November 30, 2010 10:22 PM (GMT)
I often play a friend and his Tau armie and I rearly win. I need help getting my tactis and units straight when fighting a strong shooter like tau. The tau list often looks like follows: 2 devilfish each with a fire warrior crew, 2 piranhas, pathfinder x3, 1 hammerhead gunship, 1 broadside battle suit, 4 crisis battlesuit, 1 battlesuit commander, 2 scout ships. He has alot of marklights and twinlinkled weapons. All opinions and help welcomed!

This may get a slightly better responce in the "War Torn Future" forum.
What models do you own and regulary field?
I personaly mostly see Tau as an army to scare. Their Crisis Suits and Broadsides are low numbers and, for what is not becoming rare in 40k, not fearless.
It sounds stupid but, imo a lot of tau is best beat with shooting.

So far my best list against Tau is this:
15 Bloodletters joined by Skulltaker
10 Daemonettes joined by the Masque
10 Plaugebearer, noixes touch
3 Beast of Nurgel, noixes touch
1 Daemon prince with daemonic flight, iron hide, unholy might, soporic musk, breath of chaos
I never tried to out fire the Tau because everyone always say U canīt. I only have 6 flamers, 10 pinkhorrers + changling and a soulgrinder to my name when it comes to shooting. Sense I tried flamers breath of chaos I never got them working for me. Now i deepstrike them in 3s deep in enemy lines on Kamikaze missions. He fears my Soulgrinder so he allways kills it early on. The only good things I get is offcourse in C.C whith alot of dice. Letters rock the battlesuits ond the daemonettes rending often get the vehicles so do the Fiends, but I lack something...

I can't offer you much help in beating the Tau, but glad to have another daemon player aboard... 40k or Fantays. Fantasy looks like a great game, but I just never find the time to get into it. Some day though...

Played Fantasy before 40K and I personally feel more at home in 40K. Havenīt played Fantasy with the new rules thou. Maybee they fixed some of the things I didnīt like. To many silly/stupid rules that makes no sense. / Jens

Question from a newbie does a soulgrinder gain 5 or 6 attacks, because of the harvester on the sword.
And with your problem use a Tzeetch DP with bolt of Tzeetch with either damonic gaze or breath of chaos. take out the hammerhead or broadside battle suit. If he's scared of your soulgrinder. limit his anti tank. and if he tires to rush the SG with Battlesuits. you use pavane of slansesh to force him into a killzone.

Havn't played against Tau for ages, but each time I have I found lots of bloodletter units dropped right in front of his troops does wonders, even to the point of DSing into cover in the middle of his lines. Don't forget you can take invul saves against dangerous terrain tests :D
If your up against lots of S5 shooting, T3 daemonettes die far too easily. As an aside, The Masque can never join another unit - she dances alone. I can see how seekers would be useful against dug-in troops, although I've never played them.
Count your Elite choices - you're only allowed to have 3. I play flamers as a large unit of 6 - on DS, 3 breath, the other 3 warpfire whats left. They usually survive long enough for a 2nd and 3rd turn, which soaks up firepower which could be used for killing your advancing troops. Just be careful if your opponent has reserves.

Here's some few hints on how to deal with the Tau in 40k.
First wave of Daemons should be mostly those that can withstand shooting in the first turn ( like Plaguebearers, nurglings, Great Unclean one, most MCs, anything that can screen the more vulnerable daemons. )
Pink Horrors can be good to soften up their troops and infiltrators with so many shots and low toughness makes them take so many armor saves, that they feel like they are fighting another tau player.
This may sound crazy but Flamers can really ruin a Hammerhead's day with so many glancing hits, and Screamers would assault them at ease in this turn or the next for sure.
They are pretty weak at Close Combat ( backed up with Kroots but you can let the Horrors and Flamers deal them ), use Bloodletters and Daemonettes with huge number of waves.
Any of your Monstrous Creatures with wings or Fleet can deal with their tanks.
