Once upon a time, there was a glorious, shining kingdom on the Moon. The ruler of this Kingdom was a woman by the name of Selenity. Her daughter, the sole heir to the throne, was named Serenity. The Lunarian Princess had everything she could ever dream of, up to and including a group of girls who were all born around the same time as she. The Senshi of Mercury, Venus, Mars and Jupiter were not only her guardians, but also her friends. Serenity was a curious girl, and she was always daydreaming about the Earth, which she had only seen from afar. It was strictly forbidden for her to ever go there. The people of Earth did not like the Lunarian people, because of their longevity, and for the Princess to go there would be disastrous. Unfortunately, the inevitable happened one day, and while she was wandering around in awe of the real trees and grass, she happened upon the Prince of Earth himself.
Serenity would sneak away regularly to visit Endymion, and before she knew it, she had fallen in love with the man. Unfortunately, all was not well. A peasant woman from Earth was also in love with Endymion. She somehow found out about his relationship with the Moon Princess, and vowed that if she would not have him, nobody would. In time, a dark power called Metallia twisted and corrupted her, filling her head and heart with thoughts of revenge and hatred. She went to Endymion's most loyal friends, the Shitennou and bewitched them with her wicked ways. The stage was set, and all she had to do was wait. The opportune moment came sooner than she had expected. The night of the Princess' sixteenth birthday, when the whole of the Lunarian Kingdom was gathered in celebration, Beryl led the Shitennou, and others from Earth in an attack on the Kingdom. The Shitennou laid waste to anyone they encountered. The Senshi tried to hold them off, and protect the Princess, but they fell at the hands of the Shitennou themselves.
Beryl found Serenity and Endymion together, and confronted the Prince, ultimately leading to his demise. Distraught, Serenity took her own life with Endymion's sword. Selenity, having witnessed this, knew what she had to do. Calling upon the power of the Ginzuishou, the silver Queen sealed the souls of everyone who had perished that night inside the shining stone and sent them away from herself, forward in time, where they could be reborn to live happy lives. This act was her last, as the sealing had taken a lot out of her, and she was already weakened from the battle and the stress of losing her kingdom and daughter. As she lay dying, she watched the Ginzuishou's descent, and the last thought that ran through her head was the wish for her daughter to be happy one day with her love.
Later, Serenity and the Senshi were all reborn on Earth, as human girls. They would ultimately be reunited, only to find themselves at war with the newly re-established Dark Kingdom. After many battles, they managed to defeat Queen Beryl and the reincarnations of the Shitennou, ridding the Earth of the Dark Kingdom. Their work had only begun, as it would seem that the Dark Kingdom weren't the only ones threatening the Earth. A duo of aliens calling themselves Ail and An came to Earth, looking for energy to sustain their mother, a sentient tree called the Makaiju. Ultimately, their scheme was brought to an end and Sailor Moon healed the Makaiji, at which point the two departed from Earth in search of a place where they could live in peace with the seedling. Following that, a child traveled back in time. It was later revealed that Chibiusa was the future child of Usagi and Mamoru, after they had become Neo-Queen and Neo-King of Crystal Tokyo.
Chibiusa had come back in time to get the Ginzuishou, believing it was the only way to help her mother. Sailor Moon and the rest of the Senshi accompanied her to the future where they helped her set things right in her own time. The Senshi would then return to their own time with the belief that all was well. Unfortunately for them, Rei had a vision in the form of a dream, depicting the end of the world, as well as someone known only as "the Messiah". In time, Sailors Uranus, Neptune and Saturn would make themselves known to the group, accompanied by Sailor Pluto. Additionally, Chibiusa would return from the future in her official capacity as Sailor Chibi Moon. There would be many battles to follow, and it didn't take long to figure out that this newest threat was interested in destroying all life in the universe, rather than taking it over. Ultimately, Sailor Moon and her senshi were able to defeat the Death Busters, and their leader, the mad scientist, Souichi Tomoe.
Shortly after, the Dead Moon Circus arrived, just in time to cause more trouble for everyone. A being known as the Pegasus began to visit Chibiusa in her dreams, with the intent of asking her her help in finding the one that could help him escape the Circus. It was later revealed that his home, the land of Elysion, was destroyed by the leader of this terrible new group, and that he was searching for a maiden that could help him restore his home. In the end, Nehelenia was revealed to be the one behind everything. Once the queen of an asteroid and worshiped for her beauty, she grew desperate when the mirror showed her as an old woman, and began to steal and eat the dream mirrors of her servants, in an effort to stay young and beautiful for all time. Upon hearing this, Sailor Moon took pity on her and resealed her back inside the mirror where she could be content in her illusion once more. The Amazon Trio and the Amazoness Quartet, formerly slaves of Nehelenia, were released from their bonds and given new leases on life; the former as ordinary animals, and the latter were sent back into their deep sleep until the time when they would be needed.
After a brief return from Nehelenia, released from her mirror by an as of yet unknown antagonist, Sailor Moon fights her way to the twisted Queen's castle and breaks the curse she had placed over Mamoru. Afterward, she and the other Senshi combine their strength and return Nehelenia to her childhood once and for all. Following this, Mamoru announced his departure for America, after leaving Usagi with an engagement ring. At the same time, the popular group Three Lights made their official debut in Tokyo. While Usagi and the others attempted to get close to the three famous teens, an evil organization called Shadow Galactica and its Queen, Sailor Galaxia were targeting pure star seeds. Additionally, three new senshi, the Sailor Starlights, had also arrived. At first, the two groups would clash, and it was ultimately Sailor Moon that wanted to work together in an effort to stop the newest threat against the world. In the end, it is revealed that the Starlights are actually Three Lights, and that they had come to Earth in search of their missing Princess.
In the final battle, the Starlights joined Sailor Moon and the other Sol to confront Sailor Galaxia. In the end, only the Starlights and Sailor Moon were able to survive, at which point Sailor Moon resigned herself to facing Galaxia alone. Even after losing all of her dear friends, Sailor Moon refused to kill Galaxia with the Sword of Sealing, instead insisting that there was still some good left in her. Ultimately, she was able to expel Chaos from the legendary strongest Senshi's body with the power of her love. After that, everyone was returned to life. Following their second reunion with Kakyuu, the four said their goodbyes and left the planet to return to their own home.
