QUOTE (IGN via Team Xbox)
"SCE has secured the patent for a new disc technology that, if used, would not allow the PS3 to read used games for that platform. The technology was invented by Kutaragi himself, as well as two others

Details regarding the patent are featured here: http://www.ipdl.ncipi.go.jp/homepg.ipdl

It is indicated specifically that the technology is to prevent the use of used as well as pirated software

The technology involves actually rendering a authentication code originally encrypted on the game disk unreadable to other machines once the disk it is used

This would mean that Net-based and other such games will not be the only ones to be affected by the technology

Naturally third software developers would embrace this technology, and it would ensure sales of the inevitable "Best series" for the PS3, but used games shops would be put out of business if the PS3 were to become the primary platform in the next generation

While information regarding the patent does not specify outright that the technology will be used in the PS3, Kutaragi has gone on record saying that copy management is absolutely necessary in order to endure that no "Napsters" of the game industry create problems in the future "

........yeah. I'm floored. This is without a doubt the stupidest thing I've ever seen. I fully endorce implimenting copy protection on a game. They should NOT be ripped off, but telling me that I am not allowed to play a game on anyone else's machine, not allowed to rent games, not allowed to pick up a gem at a second hand shop I may have not been able to afford at launch, not allowed to KEEP MY LIBRARY IF THE MACHINE DIES, and not allowed to sell the game when I'm done with it? Fu*k them.

Talk about planned oblesence. If this is used in Playstation 3 software, then they can kiss my ass. I will not allow Sony to tell me what I am allowed to spend money on, as well as where I am allowed to spend it.

Honestly, they can not be this stupid....can they? Honestly. This is the dumbest sh*t I have ever heard. Illegal Malware DRM on people's computers, sueing soccor moms over Mp3's, and now locking up people's game libraries and telling them what they are allowed to do with them. They're fu*king communists.

*holds back knee-jerk Nintendo fanboy response*

This really just gave me far too much amunition.

Thank you, kutaragi. This is *olmost* as much fun as laughing over the Japanese Xbox sales.

You know though, I wonder if there's any truth to this.

I doubt it.

But still... Damn funny.

After all the Sony b****ing of the last couple of weeks I thought I could dig up two pro PS3 news:

PS3 without regional code?

Sony boss Stringer talks PS3 price... and it may be affordable without selling your grandma!

Both are very recent news and sound surprisingly good to me.

I applaud them for doing away with the ancient stipulation of region codes. Bravo Sony. But, with the lack of region codes, you can expect prices to go up......wait.

Yay now if I go to a friends house I have to bring my whole system with me! Bad ass!

Seriously it doesn't matter what they do morons will still buy the system and say it's the best thing since sliced bread. They could put a giant penis on the top and revert the graphics back to the PS1 days and people would still say "It has Grand Theft Auto, and not kiddy games like Nintendo. Microsoft sucks too because they want to take over the world." sleep.gif

They already did make a giant penis part of the console.

It's called the controler.

And Sony's making it sound like they're the first to have a system that doesn't have region codes... Gameboy, what?

Sorta. The N64 only had little plastic parts blocking the japanese carts from being plugged in, and all you've gotta do is take an exacto blade to it and there ya go. If you didn't wanna mess with an exacto, you could open the case up, and take it off.

I'm just trying to be difficult wink.gif

Wow, that's really sad. Though I don't really understand this concept of authentication code or whatever that will prevent used games sales.

This is so retarded, but I am not going to buy PS3 anyways, so whatever. Im only going to be buying Revolution. This is really stupid though. It is Sony being greedy, because they know that if you have a game that your friend likes, he will have to buy it, and instead of renting a game, you will just have to go out on a limb and buy it. This is so f***ing dumb. f*** Evil Corporations, I say.

Oh... I didn't even think about rentals...

If Sony does infact do this, they're going to piss of TONS of stores. Tons.

As in, I can picture the Gamestop staffers all talking people out of PS3's. *shrudder*.

Now that I think about it this just begs for hackers to make a program that smashes down this disk code thing. Or for them to make a program that generates this code and lets you play anything....
