Georgia’s impudent look as she glanced at him told him that she was none too pleased to see him. Of course, he was used to that kind of reaction in town, but it was a little harsh to get the cold shoulder from a four year old.

    name:: Jess Ettore Mariano
    age:: twenty-three
    birthday:: August 11th, 1983
    birthplace:: Manhattan, New York

    occupation:: author/publisher/gallery co-owner/waiter

    personality::

    Upon first seeing Jess, most people tend to think ‘hoodlum.’ Once upon a time this may have been true, but things change, even if first impressions don’t. Despite the fact that Jess still gives the look of the typical delinquent, he is anything but, even if it took him twenty-three years to figure it out. Despite his new leaf, he still retains some of his old delinquent qualities. For one, he is still very arrogant. Not an outright, show the world kind of arrogance, but an arrogance all the same. While he has never truly thought he was better than anyone else, he has always had a feeling that he is more intelligent than most people. Even though he knows he shouldn’t feel this way and he knows he has more to learn than probably anyone, he still cannot help but feel superior to most people. Though he tries not express this inherent belief of his, his snobby personality comes out a bit whenever anyone discusses movies, music or literature. He just can’t help it. Jess is the type of guy that feels he knows what is good and need to share this kind of knowledge with the world.

    On top of being arrogant, he is also a very hardheaded and very driven individual. Upon finding what he wants to do with his life, he has worked tirelessly to achieve it. He has given up on trite wishes and fantasies and embraced the real world for all that its worth. Working at and with the publishers in Philadelphia has taught him how to work and work hard. Jess has learned the value of doing something that he believes in and he has also learned what it means to loose. However, loosing something he has put a lot of time and effort into has not left him bitter. It has made him realize that not everything is going to come easy and he has started working even harder than before. He is so driven that he is not willing to give up on the company. Though, this may be just because he is unwilling to admit defeat. He may be hardworking and driven, but he is still in essence the same boy that he was only a few years previous. In such, he still has troubling dealing with not being able (or allowed) to do something. He likes his ideals and he likes things getting done, if things are done his way, all the better, right?

    Jess has a wry sort of humor that not many people appreciate. Sarcasm is a necessity. It is certain that Jess would not be able to function properly if he couldn’t give a wry or sarcastic remark. Even though he’s allegedly grown out of his former habits, sarcasm is something Jess will never leave behind him. It’s like asking the Gilmores to give up coffee. It will never happen.. Jess’s wry sense of humor does not stop with just his sarcastic remarks and occasional condescending banter. He often laughs at things that most people wouldn’t find funny and tends to find humor in any situation, no matter how grave (though it’s not humor that would ever be expressly shared by anyone else). He is not truly capable of a joke, though his dry comments and crude sayings can often be passed as such. Jess is not the type of bloke that anyone would ever consider funny, but he is the type of bloke that most people would be willing to laugh with.

    The majority of people that have met Jess in passing or perhaps even those that have known him for ages, would not guess that he is an intelligent person. He is just not the type of person that anyone would look at and think ‘well I bet he’s smart.’ Its okay, you’re allowed to think it; he’s not the type to take offense to it (well, he is, but he does his best to hide it). He is incredibly well-read and spends the majority of his time reading and writing. He tends to read the classics, though he has been known to venture into the world of post modern literature like Vonnegut and Palahniuk, though, you know, who hasn’t? While he doesn’t flaunt his intellect, he does like to lord the fact that he is intelligent over people, especially people who assume that he is the average street rat.

    appearance::
    It was to be expected that Jess would grow to be a stunning young man, despite the fact that as a boy he was rather gangly. With long legs and a strong jaw line even as a child he was not the type that had people gushing, but this mattered little to the boy. As a boy Jess was almost dangerously competitive with other boys in his neighborhood, wanting to do everything that they did and finding no limits to his ability to do so. He pushed himself hard, beyond the point of most children, and he was able to. This left him with great stamina, and therefore, strong, sinewy muscles in his arms and legs.

    With thick dark hair and matching eyes Jess is the perfect portrayal of someone you would not want to encounter on a dark street. His prominent brow casts his features in shadow and forces the angled lines of his face to stick out more prominently, making Jess seem all the more sinister. High cheekbones contribute to this, and with his lips twisted in to a constant sneer he is definitely a force to be reckoned with. The lips in question are mismatched, the upper one being far thinner than the full lower. They would be considered sultry and inviting were you to ask the mass majority of women. Were you to put a shape to Jess’s face it would be nothing other than a square. With his sharp features his look is what most women would call chiseled, the type of look that is meant to make the opposite sex swoon. His skin seems naturally tan, despite lack of exposure the sun.

    Perhaps the most notable point of his appearance is not a physical feature at all, but Jess’s very manner. Despite the changes in his personality that time has given him, he still gives the overall appearance of the former Stars Hallow hoodlum. His posture is slumped, his shoulders always pushed forward and his head always held low. His presence is demanding, no matter his sulky look, when he walks in to a room he is quick to be noticed. In fact it would be quite impossible not to notice him.

    history::
    Liz Danes was quick to leave the small town life of Stars Hallow behind her for the big city. Upon graduating, she picked up and left for Manhattan before her graduation party was even over. She needed an escape and Manhattan seemed like the place for it. It was during her escape that she met Jimmy Mariano and it seemed that everything went downhill from there. After a few weeks together, Liz found out she was pregnant and Jimmy saw no reason to stay around. Shortly after Jess was born, Jimmy split leaving Liz with the baby. Liz, unwilling to admit that she had been wrong about leaving home, stuck it out for the better part of her life in Manhattan, returning to Stars Hallow briefly for visits and not much else.

    Jess, for the most part, was a good kid growing up. At least, he didn’t give Liz much trouble. He spent most of his time reading, and Liz didn’t mind, so long as he was quiet. Considering he spent most of his time alone, Jess didn’t do much for people skills. By the time he was eleven, he already had a bit of an attitude problem and a fierce competitive spirit. Even so, in school he did very well. Teachers were impressed with his intelligence, but his inability to function properly in class was getting to be a problem. More time passed and Jess began acting out, getting into trouble and for the most part, hanging around with the wrong crowd. And Liz realized that he was having problems in school and just in society in general. So she did what she always did, she ran away from the stress and sent Jess to live in Stars Hallow, most definitely against his will.

    Stars Hallow was everything Jess expected it to be: hell. He was so used to the city and having friends, albeit the wrong ones and he was not willing to adjust to the life of a country bumpkin. So, he didn’t. Not even three months in the Hallow and Jess was raring to leave. It didn’t take much for him to find a way to do it, either. After wrecking Rory’s car on the main strip of the Hallow, Luke feels that Jess has overspent his stay and sends him back to his mother. Or rather, he thought he’d sent Jess back to his mother. Instead, Jess takes to basically slumming it, squatting when he can, and sleeping in the park when he can’t. Eventually he returns to live with his mother, and to his utter horror, T.J., though his lifestyle doesn’t change much. However, when Rory comes to visit him, Jess decides that it is time for him to return to Stars Hallow and does just that. Even if Luke’s stipulations are a bit much.

    However, things with Rory don’t last and things with Luke get complicated, so Jess splits again. This time for Venice Beach, California to find his father. When he shows up there, he finds that his dad’s community is almost as ridiculous as Stars Hallow. But there wasn’t really anywhere else for him to go. It didn’t take much to convince Jimmy to let him stay for a little while. A little while turned into months and eventually Jess was living with Jimmy and his live-in girlfriend and her daughter. Jimmy enrolled Jess in school in Los Angeles and immediately after graduation Jess leaves without telling anyone. He was tired of everyone’s rules and now graduated from high school, he could make a living on his own. So, he returns to Manhattan and did what he had always been doing before he’d returned to the Hallow for the second time. He spent most of his time reading in the park, working whenever he could. Eventually he joined a literary group in the Village and that led to him to move to Philadelphia where he published his book.

    For once, Jess seemed to be in control of his life and he actually felt good about it. He started working for the company that published his book. Everything was in order. He put a lot of money and time into the company and it seemed to be going well. However, the company did not last and after two years of business, the publishing company failed and left Jess with no place to go. Feeling lost, Jess turned to the one person that was always capable of keeping a (begrudging) roof over his head. He turns up in Stars Hallow (to the town’s dismay) and currently lives in the apartment over the diner. He’s working to overturn the bankruptcy clause with the bank and reopen the company in Philadelphia, though things aren’t really looking up.
