Yeah, lol. Personally I think the situation is stupid. Apparently there is no 'exact border' between Iran and Iraq in the area the Marines and Royal Navy were detained. The border is supposed to be in the middle of the waters or something?

So they can say, "look, we're important aren't we?".
It's been done throughout history... |

Aren't there rumours coming out that they want to prosecute them? Oh well, if they want to get like this over such a small matter we should retaliate over a small matter - like invade over their continued abuse of rules regarding them producing nuclear material.

well the marines and the two saliors are being freed today apparently. One of them lives not too far away so its all over the local news. But Iran has confiscated the boats as well as al weapons because they 'believe the UK was not on a patrol mission and need to study the evidence further.' ie. learn about our weapons so they may copy us. Obviously it was worrying for them to be captured but better Iran than Iraqi terrorists.
btw the border is actually in the water and I believe they strayed about 1/4 of a mile into it before being captured by patrol boats. |

Well hopefully they will copy the SA80 and if we go to war with them ever, they will experience the problems we get! Its not the Iraqi terrorists that you need to worry about - the damn saudi arabian terrorists floating around in Iraq and Saudi Arabia are the ones to watch for. I think its all down to one upmanship at this time, since recently the UK has been very vocal about iran not opening up to the UN nuclear inspectors.
Iran found something that could embarress the british government and have done so, be it only short term but objective met |

you would think though, with the british military being the best in the world, that they wouldn't 'cock up' like this? Straying into Iranian territory would be hard to do for an experienced marine like the one that was leading the expedition. Perhaps they were in fact supposed to make a 'mistake' and stray into Iranian waters undected to see what they were up to. So to speak.

The area they were supposedly picked up from, was not very wide, so accidently straying into Iranian water may not be that hard. |

I'll agreee with Viking there, the boundary is very blurred and it could have been a mistake, careless, maybe, but easy, definitely.
I think they had .203's, at least I heard that that's what were in the pictures. SA80 and A2. My dad has never had a problem with the weapon itself; he reckons that those that do just aren't taking care of them. |

Yeah, i'll drink to that! If they are taken care of and still go wrong the military would not use the weapon. Infact the weapon is probably fine, it's just the media making stories to fill their pages again. |

Exactly, a lot of it is British media 'woe is us we'll never win a war' type stuff. The problem with the SA80 before the A2, or so I've heard, was that when the action came back to expend a case it occasionally cut the case in half as it came back. This is obviously not good. But once they'd sorted out the ejecting mechanism and some of the gas operated dealies it worked as you would expect it. I can believe that some people do have problems with the weapon even if it is cleaned regulary; happens, y'know.
The M16A2 might be slightly more reliable, but it was built with jungle warfare in mind, and made to keep working even if it was still smeared in the grease it was packed with! |
