I LMAOed at Ari's answer. If that happened, then who would save Annie, though?

The "It Had To Be Done" picture I didn't understand. I liked the one about Ari's answer, and the microphone looked like a lollipop. stantounge.gif

Well Boogie-senpai, Arma is a normally black shadow-like raven made by a Deviantartist by the name of Unknown-Person. Here's his or her gallery:
http://unknown-person.deviantart.com/

The person is pretty famous for the Law of Talos and Endzone OCT's he or she entered with the characters Karl and Climber. There's fanart all over..matter of fact..if you type in the word Karl....the most popular picture is fanart of the character. Arma is Karl's raven.

Woah, that was long. stansweating2.gif

Senpai is a japanese suffix that is used to adress those who are above class than you. Like, if you were in middle school, and a person was in high school, you'd adress the person in high school as so-and-so-senpai.

Very cool! I didn’t know that. smile.gif ty for telling me. Boogie-senpai is very befitting. How do you refer to someone who is younger then you? What would I call my little sisters? ( they might like it because they really like animes and stuff right now.)
Sorry I’m off topic here.

There are a lot of honorifics in Japanese that you don't usually hear in anime or manga. Without basic Japanese knowledge, you might not even notice that when Japanese speak to their superiors their Japanese changes significantly. Japanese honorifics (or keigo) are almost like a completely different language inside of Japanese. Most of the verbs are completely irregular and it is almost impossible to guess what they are saying unless you have researched keigo specifically or learned it in a class.

As for titles, there are a lot that are used in numerous situations. 先輩 (senpai) is a term used for someone who has started a job, school, or activity after you did. 後輩 (couhai) would be a term for someone who started before you. In the job force, age may or may not be a determining factor of titles because it is relative on how long you have been working for the company, or your position in that company (and inside all of that, there are specific titles for specific positions on the workforce ladder.

As for around the home, although it is true that お兄さん (o nii san, older brother)、お母さん (o caa san, mother)、お父さん (o tou san, father)、お姉さん (o nee san, older sister)、弟うさん (otoutou san, younger brother)、妹うさん (imoutou san, younger sister) are used as honorific forms of expressing family members, they are usually only used by someone who is not part of the family referring to another person's family (as they are raising that family above their own). Whereas, if you are talking about your family to someone else you usually will NOT use honorifics, even for your parents. You humblize your family. You would shorten oniisan to nii san... sister to nee san. Mother becomes haha instead of o caa san (that's how you pronounce the kanji without the honorifics), and father becomes chichi. You probably may have also heard many other variations.

As for addressing your own family in the home, that usually depends on the family. However with younger siblings chan or kun is usually used. Even in school, chan and kun may be used over couhai (which is probably why you may not hear that term often). All really just depends.

I've taken 4 semesters of Japanese and I'm double majoring (Japanese being the 2nd major, or a minor if time doesn't allow). I think I've earned the right to be technical once in a while.

Besides, I think the cultural aspects are interesting.

Oh, by the way... your line about the word senpai, you said after for it like you did for couhai. Just to let you know.

4 semesters? are those like years? and whats double majoring? Sorry, "College Honorifics" aren't my thing. stantounge.gif

And of course the cultural aspects are interesting, I was just commenting on your in depth explanations. X D

Typo.

And what can you do.. Japanese is complicated.

Semesters are half of a year. So that's 2 years. Although I took one semester over the summer, so it's more like a year and a half. I'm taking JPN313 this fall. I've forgotten a lot over the summer though so I'm probably in for a rude awakening. I almost took it over the summer in Japan, but it would have been way too costly and I needed that money to get a macbook (which I need for my classes).

Woah holy caboodles-Cantonese-noodles stansmile2.gif ! I am totally impressed!
Keigo sounds mind bottling! Thank you so much for posting this info, I had no idea how intricate the Japanese language was, its really fascinating to read. So if I where talking about my friends families I would address them more formally or respectfully but with my own it would be more humble and less formal? so I can call my sisters nii san? (If so that is co cute biggrin.gif) if different ages and postitions and ranks in jobs have honorifics, Do different genders have honorifics?

That is really interesting because I can’t exactly think of an example of honorifics that are used in the English language. Do they exist in the English language? would it be like calling your boss sir?

The English language in general is less formal. Mr., Mrs., Ms., Sir, etc is all I think we have...

As far as Japaense goes, your own family really depends on your family. Kind of like whether we call our moms mother, mom, etc.

I may not be 100% right with some of this stuff though, this is really all just I'm saying that I heard from my teacher last semester, who is native Japanese and likes to correct us on a lot of our misunderstandings. (she was totally cute :3)

As for calling your sisters nii-san, that would probably sound weird to someone Japanese because nii san is used for an older brother, you would have to use nee san, unless, of course, they were younger than you. Sometimes in family (according to my teacher) they even go by first name with their siblings, but it all depends on the family.
