( KAOS )
History:In 1992, following the full integration of Dane university with Demount College and a national debate on the Skull and Bones society at Yale’s lack of acceptance of women, a campaign was formed insisting that the Sons of Silence tap females as well as males for membership. At the forefront of the team, was Dane journalism legacy, Miranda Caffrey, the freshman granddaughter of Burt Caffrey. M. Caffrey is said to have rediscovered the Sons of Silence. It is rumored that she threatened to expose them again if they did not accept women. The SOS refused, but instead of exposing them, Caffrey founded a new, coeducational society called Kaos, keeping the secrets that she had found on SOS to pass on to her brother and sister Kaotics from then on. It is rumored that the rivalry is so strong between the two societies, that is caused the library fire of 1998.
Kaos:In Greek cosmology, Kaos was the primordial state of matter from which the cosmos and the gods emerged.
About the Kaotics:Kaos is not just about poaching men from the Sons of Silence and including women. Those chosen for Kaos are the people who show the kind of potential Miranda Caffrey recognized. Kaotics are strong, opinionated, and independent minded. They believe in the community, but the have faith- make that certainty- in a better tomorrow… one that they (and maybe only they) can bring about. The ideal Kaotic is someone with ideas, someone who lives in the modern world and wants a truly be a part of it. Not every Kaotic has the same opinions, vision, or ideas, but this is the type of spirit that runs through Kaos at its core.
The Sachems' Circle:The Sachems' Circle is the board of 7 leaders. To become a Sachem you must have been a member of Kaos for at least 3 years. Once you've become a Sachem you hold your place in the Circle until you leave Dane University. When a Sachem has left the Circle, a new Sachem is chosen by a democratic election among the members.

Symbol:The first Sachems of Kaos chose the serpent entwined around the egg as a symbol for their super exclusive society. It was a symbol common to the Indians, the Egyptians and the Drusi. It refers to the creation of the universe. The egg and the serpent are also symbols for rebirth.
Membership selection:Toward the end of each September, 12 people are chosen by the Sachems as potential initiates. They are each greeted with a “Cosmos Letter,” but told almost nothing about Kaos. Potentials had the rest of the Fall Semester to show their understanding of the Cosmos Letter and prove their worth to the community. In addition, one student is chosen over the summer or at the end of the spring semester. This student is initiated at the start of the fall semester in September and serves as a sort of "class leader" for the rest of the initiation class. He or she also serves as the liaison between the Kaotics and the potential initiates. From the 12 potential initiates, only 7 more are chosen to be Kaos initiates. A meeting of all Kaotics over winter break determines the remaining 7. Kaos Initiation takes place in January each year. You can read about the initiation-process in the Valhalla forum.

Valhalla:The meeting place for the members of Kaos. Valhalla is an old house located in Lyon Park. Only the Kaotics know its location. The house is a large square, with an open courtyard in the center. The courtyard is home to a long, shallow fountain surrounded by plants. At the head of the fountain stands a large statue of the Kaos symbol- the serpent surrounding the egg. Along the sides, there is a jumping fountain. The fountain leads all the way to the Great Hall of Valhalla, a large, round, spacious room where the meetings take place. The Great Hall has 25 seats in a circle and a small platform with the seven seats for the Sachems. Behind the Sachems is a larger serpent statue.
In Scandinavian mythology, Valhalla (from Old Norse Valhöll "hall of the slain) is a majestic, enormous hall located in Asgard, ruled over by the god Odin. Chosen by Odin, half of those that die in combat travel to Valhalla upon death, led by Valkyries, while the other half go to the goddess Freyja's field Fólkvangr.
