"It's shouldn't bother you." He took another full bite. "I don't want it to bother you. We're starting a family, and that's not her business, you know?" He didn't really understand the significance of the reference letter.
He smiled at her comment about the bike. "I don't know. I just think he wants to save the money, but he's sacrificing quality and the strength of the design. One of those wealthy people that don't wanna spend money."

She nodded at both sentiments, smiling a small smile. They were starting a family. The word "we" never sounded better to Avery than when Nolan said it, but she was still scared to believe him. The fact that he left and that he wasn't happy about her being pregnant in the beginning overshadowed a lot of the positive things he'd done. Even him saying that... Well, it made her feel all warm and tingly - until she remembered that she had practically forced him to start a family. "Well, it'll cost him more in the long run, right?" She asked, trying to stay engaged and not get too lost in her thoughts.

Avery nodded, continuing to eat. She hadn't realized how hungry she was, but now that she was eating she realized she was famished. "And he'll pay you again when his stupid plan fails" she shrugged. No problem for Nolan, right?

"Yeah." He agreed. "But I mean. It's my design. I don't want him going around, saying my design is shit?" That would be aggravating. "That looks bad on me. I want people to respect my designs."

She nodded again. "I guess that's true, too" Avery murmured, more to herself. She didn't know what to tell him. If he ended up doing something for her dad it'd be good press, right? but she didn't want to bring that up right then, really.

She looked up at him curiously, having been intensely focussed on getting the last of her food into her mouth. "I thought this was my present" Avery pointed out. He was going to far too much trouble.

"I got you something." He insisted, getting up from the table and ducking into their bedroom. He returned with a small box, wrapped with a silver bow. "Here, Ave." He said, sitting down. He'd gone and gotten her one of those Pandora charm bracelets, and a heart charm attached to a key for the heart. Hopefully, she'd like it.

She didn't want a gift. And when he handed her a box that was definitely for jewellery she thought she might cry. But Avery opened the box anyway, eyebrows furrowing in confusion as she looked at the charm on the bracelet. "I don't understand" She said to him, "It's beautiful but I don't understand" She just wanted to crawl into bed and cry. It felt like he was mocking her, telling her how hard it was going to be for him to love her. Because he didn't. And he wouldn't. And one day, he would get tired of playing house and leave her and their baby alone.

"You don't? It's. Um. One of those Pandora charm bracelets." Now he felt stupid. "That's only the first one. I thought that I would, like... get you more. Each holiday and stuff." He looked at his hands, embarrassed.

Each holiday. Like he planned to be around for them. God, he didn't even know that she was freaking out and he was reassuring her. She dropped the box on the counter and stood, throwing herself at him and wrapping her arms around him tightly, kissing any exposed skin she could reach. She was crying, she could feel the wetness of her tears on her cheeks, and she knew he wouldn't understand, but it didn't matter. He didn't want to leave her - that was what mattered.

God, she didn't care about the bracelet at all. It was the fact that he planned to be with her for long enough to get more charms. But still, she nodded, holding him tight. She wanted to apologize for doubting him - for thinking he would leave her again, for not trusting him - but she didn't. Instead, she looked up at him, "I love it"

"Good." He said, cracking a smile, and kissing her quick on the lips, before pulling back to look at her. He wiped some of her tears away. "I figure... we get a charm when the baby comes. And Christmas. And we'll fill the bracelet."
