I'm impressed. For a moment there, I thought you were
just a dumb hick who only has sex with farm animals.

    looks most like her mother
distinguishing features her dark mocha skin and cat-like eyes
    flaws a little too slender
appearance Her hair is something to be reckoned with. It’s like a raven’s wing, dark and sleek and luscious. Her locks fall down to the middle of her back in soft, natural waves, which she mostly keeps pin straight and tied in a high ponytail, framing her high cheekbones beautifully. Nyota adores her hair – she was always the one to run a long, slender hand over it and to reveal her glossy tresses. It's really the only part of her that she's slightly vain about.

Eyes are a controversial topic to many people out there in the world. They are either vulnerable, touching windows to the soul or they are fathomless pits of nothing there. Just dead, raw-like emotion or feeling. In Sofia’s case, the first would certainly be more accurate. She's the kind of girl who has her heart on her sleeve for the whole world to see – quite the emotional type. This applies particularly to her eyes. If she's happy, you'll be able to tell. If she's pissed off, you'll be able to tell. If she's anything, you'll probably be able to tell. Nyota doesn't hide her feelings well, or at all, in fact – betraying her if ever she's trying to hide something. Her eyes really are quite lovely, though. Cat-like, in a shade of dark brown, which she doesn't find very special, but sparkle like gemstones with seemingly never-ending lashes. Sofia has always had a natural gift with her eyes – a flick of her large hues can send a man tumbling down on his knees. They’re the most alluring color, a deep cocoa with flecks of gold in them. Her lashes are long and elusive, sweeping across her cheek seductively, fluttering innocently whenever she sleeps. Her hues are almost disproportionate to her face – slightly more spaced out than for most. Even if narrowed and suspicious-like, which let's face it they usually are, they’ll always possess their infinite charm. However they make it impossible to fool a single person. There really is no tricking anyone if she's feeling down, so their beauty makes up for such a fault.

Along with her exotic, African features, Nyota possesses an incredibly slender body. No, she isn't curvaceous with breasts bigger than her head and hips wider than the moon, although sometimes she wishes she did. She was born thin with small bones. Once puberty hit and all of the other girls blossomed, she remained the same, her hips flaring out ever so slightly along with her slight bosom. She didn't mind too much until the other kids her age began teasing and picking on her. She took their words to heart and felt like the freak they called her out to be, but she did eventually accept the body her mother gave her and took it as a blessing, because although she may be about as skinny as a bean pole, there will never be a time in her life where she'll have to watch what she eats. And that is certainly a blessing. Nyota actually has many fine physical attributes, although she isn't aware of many of them. She has a lithe body, slender like a dancer's. Her neck is long, one of her greatest features – she has the collarbone of a princess. Her shoulders are small and dainty, fragile like the rest of her. She has an hour glass figure, no matter how narrow that hour glass may be with a tiny waist and dainty hips, with a swing to their own rhythm, as she is a natural dancer. Nyota’s legs are long and slender yet toned and almost athletic-like. A runner since she was a girl, she has a fair bit of muscle in those legs of hers. She may not be much use in a fight or when something particularly heavy needs lifting, but she's one fast runner.

history Nyota Uhura was born in the year 2233 in the United States of Africa -- Nairobi, Kenya, to be specific -- to M'Umbha Mahia and Alhamisi Uhura. Her family was neither wealthy nor poor. While her father worked for the Starfleet, going on long missions away from home, Nyota helped her mother make jewelry at her shop. Once she was old enough, she began attending Public School 29 in downtown Nairobi. At age ten, her mother sent her to her aunt and uncle's for the summer. While she was there, she learned sign language from her deaf cousin, Epala. Nyota excelled in mathematics during her childhood. She had a wonderful mind, with a photographic memory that helped her attain the top grades in her class. However, her true talent, lay in languages. Although Kenya's official languages were Swahili and English, many more were spoken. Dozens more, in fact. Having spent a good deal of her days wandering around the market and in and out of shops, when she wasn't at school, Nyota managed to learn half of them by her tenth year. The rest were used outside of the capital, farther out in the rural areas. The following fall, she was accepted into the Institute for Advanced Mathematics. Suddenly, she wasn't the smartest girl in class anymore. She had become used to not having work very hard, but this quickly changed at her new school. Nyota had stay on her toes and work hard to stay on top of things. She nearly failed her first year out of stress. Her father came back from a deep space mission that summer and worked her to the bone. She would never disappoint him ever again, he told her. Although most kids would feel angry, irritated or simply hurt, Nyota was only further inspired. Since her father was never home, she had built an image of him in her mind. He had become her idol. She aspired to be just like him one day, travelling the galaxy.

Schoolwork improved for the young Kenyan after that. By the time she was thirteen years of age, she had become top of her class in nearly every subject, except English Literature and history, both of which she found to be incredibly dull. Outside of academia, Nyota spent her time running and singing. An odd combination, perhaps, but she was equally skilled in both. In her fourteenth year, she began staying in the school dormitories. Her roommate, T'iana, quickly became her close friend. In fact, they were the best of friends. T'iana was the youngest in her family, just as Nyota was, another reason for why they got along so splendidly. However, just before their examinations, a fire broke out in their dormitory. While all the other girls had gone to study at the library, the two girls had decided to stay in and gossip. Unfortunately, it led to T'iana's death. To this day, Nyota dreams about that day. The fire spread quickly. Before they were able to do anything about it, the building began collapsing. A wooden beam trapped T'iana, but Nyota was unable to help, as her clothing had caught fire. She quickly succumbed to the effects of the overwhelming heat and smoke. She was rescued just before it was too late. Ever since, Nyota has feared fire. Even with the candles in her room, she is almost irrationally careful, paranoid that her curtains will catch fire, causing the death of the other passengers. Despite the incident, life went on. After a short-term self-mutilating phase in her adolescence due to the loss of her friend, she focused all of her pent up energy and rage on academics and running. In fact, she won several awards upon graduation, both for her academic success and her unbroken record for the 100-metre dash. Her father's disappearance only made her more passionate about her future.

Desperate to leave home and explore the world and beyond, Nyota took what little money she had saved up, and joined Starfleet Academy at the tender age of eighteen. She traded her United States of Africa for the United States of America. It was a big change. However, always a fast learner, she learned to blend in, but refused to adopt a typical American accent. Her English was better than most of the Americans she met there. Why be ashamed of her heritage? Well, she wasn't. Desiring little contact with any of the other cadets, Nyota mentioned as few details as possible about herself and her background, going by her surname 'Uhura' only. In fact, she made it so that no one even knew her first name. No, she wasn't trying to be mysterious. She had a goal and that was it. Fraternizing with the competition would not get her anywhere, but at one point, to keep herself from going crazy, she did befriend a few of her peers. The chatting and the going out for drinks took a great shadow off of her shoulders, but she refused to open up to any of them. After all the rejection and the loss and the disappointment she had experienced as a girl, she wasn't willing to offer herself up as road kill for one more person. As for her training, Nyota studied at the Starfleet College of Communications. There, she learned advanced phonology and advanced acoustical engineering courses. She was also Vice President of Starfleet Academy's Chorale Ensemble, despite her loathing for being the centre of attention. She specialized in xenolinguistics. One of her instructors stood out from the rest. The most obvious of reasons would be because he was half Vulcan. He was strict, the most intelligent person she had ever met, about her age, and much more tenderhearted than he belived himself to be.

Commander Spock was one of few people at the Academy who truly challenged her. No matter how well she did, there was always more that she could have done. At first, this angered her. Who was he to go bossing everyone around, pointing out every little mistake?! One afternoon, her more instinctive, irrational side took over and she let. Him. Have it. It wasn't particularly smart of her, considering his position, and the fact that he alone would be responsible for her passing or failing, since all the others were perfectly satisfied with her work. But, who said humans always made the right decision? Practically no one Nyota had ever met, and probably ever would meet. For a split second, the man almost looked amused, before reverting back to his regular stoic state. Reasonably and logically, as always, he explained to her exactly why he continued to push her to improve. To make absolutely certain she would become the best Communications Officer there was. A few months later, they were dating in secret. Who would have thought? Later that year, one warm June evening, at the Shipyard Bar near the Riverside Shipyard in Iowa, Nyota met the man who would one day be the captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise. Although, on first meeting, she thought he had a better chance at being a homeless drunk. He flirted with her, badly. He was clearly very drunk, so she didn't get snappy. After all, he hadn't said anything crude or disrespectful. Unfortunately for Jim Kirk, however, the friends who had accompanied her on her night out, weren't too pleased about his advances on Nyota. She really did hate violence. Especially in bars. It was so barbaric. To her complete and utter shock, the same man turned up in her dorm room half dressed, fooling around with her 'adventurous' roomie Gaila.

Everything was running smoothly, when Nyota detected a message originating with Klingon territory. It indicated that a fleet of forty-seven Klingon vessels were in battle surrounding the Klingon prison planet, Rura Penthe. In moments, they were destroyed. However, no one seemed to pay it any attention. After graduation, Spock assigned her to the U.S.S. Farragut, trying to avoid favouritism, as he was placed in charge of the starship deployment assignments for her class. Having desired a place aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise, the brand new ship, Nyota cornered him, saying how she was more than qualified to serve aboard the Enterprise and that it was unfair to deny her such an opportunity she would have gained had they not been romantically involved. To her contentment, he relented and assigned her to the Enterprise. When Lieutenant Hawkins, the ships's communications officer was unable to understand the incoming Romulan transmissions, Nyota was promoted to take his place, as she was fluent in all three Romulan dialects, including 80% of the known Federation languages. After Vulcan's destruction, Uhura privately comforted Spock. Before Kirk and Spock beamed to Nero's ship, Spock shared a tender goodbye kiss with Uhura, calling her by her first name, and revealing their relationship in the presence of Kirk and Montgomery Scott. After Kirk's promotion and the defeat of Nero, she came to accept Kirk, as well as respect him as captain of the Enterprise.
