PLOT
In the early 1980s a secret worldwide organization know as the Gardiner initiative began to work on a chemical compound to alter human genetics. Their goal? To allow humans to develop superpower abilities.

In 2008, they discovered a formula that would affect certain humans depending on their genetic structure. Once the Gardiner Initiative cut through the red tape of governments around the world they put this chemical compound into world water supplies.

In January 2010 stories began to surface around the world of people who could perform amazing feats such as fly, turn invisible, even read minds....

•F.A.Q•
-------------------------------

Updated Oct. 5, 2010

Q• Can my character have any super power?
A• If it's on the available super power list then yes. If is on the taken list then no. If it's not on either list, ask the mods by posting here.

Q• Can my character break out of the unit with their superpower?
A• No, the unit has technology that can negate the character's power if they are caught trying to escape.

Q• Where are the characters from?
A• Anywhere in the world as the chemical compound that mutated them was released globally.

Q• How will characters communicate if they're from all around the world?
A• Upon being brought to the unit, all characters who did not know English where put into instruction classes to learn it. As well, characters who only spoke English were also forced to learn a multiple languages through instruction courses.

Q• How long have the characters been in the unit?
A• For individual characters, it is different. Some have been in the Unit since it first opened in February 2010 while others may have only recently arrived. It is up to the writer to decide what to put in the character bio.

Q• How does time work in the game?
A• Time is mod-controlled so the mod will decide when the game will move forward a day. Generally this will happen every one to two weeks.

Q• Can the characters ever leave Gene Unit?
A• Yes. As the game progresses the real intention of Gardiner Initiative will be revealed and the characters will be sent around the world to carry out missions on behalf of the Initiative.

Q• What can our characters do within Gene Unit?
A• They can interact with each other, interact with the NPCs, attend the training sessions, develop their powers and be experimented on by the Gardiner Initiative of course!

Q• How old can the characters be?
A• The character ages range from 13 to 55. No one under 13 please.

Q• Can I use anyone for a PB?
A• No, the game does have a restricted PB list. The PB you want is on that list then you have to find someone else.

Q• My application has been rejected. Can I reapply?
A• Yes as long as you were not a jerk about being rejected the first time, aren't re-posting the same app without any changes, or trying to rip off someone else's character.

    Q• I'm under 17. Can I still play?
A• No. This game is for adults.

Q• The PB I want is already taken, can I still use them?
A• You can contact the player to see if they would consider having a twin to their character but if they say no, then no.

Q• Do the powers have any limits?
A• Yes, they do. For one thing, all power development will start out slowly. Your character will not simply wake up and have full control over their power. Also, the powers will have physical side effects, such as draining a character's energy the more the power is used.

Q• Is smut allowed in this game?
A• Yes but it's up to the individual player whether wish to write it. Some players enjoy writing smut and others prefer fade to black. Discuss with the writer to see what their preference is and RESPECT it!

Q• What kind of missions will the characters perform?
A• A variety including spying, assassination, infiltration, attacks, thievery, and all the fun stuff that secret organizations like to do.

Q• Can my character refuse to take part in these missions?
A• Yes but they may suffer repercussions for their refusal such be scheduled for more experiments, training or being force to do the mission regardless.

Q• What sort of experiments will the characters be subjected to?
A• Experiments that test the physical capabilities of their powers, their overall mental state, and their physical limits. Essentially the scientists want to understand everything they can about the characters, their powers and why they developed these powers. Some may be pleasant but most experiments will not be.

Q•Is there anything that could/would dampen the characters powers inside Gene Unit? Like collars, injected nanodes or chips put under the skin, pills, etc?
A• The unit itself is wired and fully monitored so that the staff & unit head can keep an eye on how and when the characters use their powers. They may use them within the unit but if the characters try to do anything like escape with their powers or try to kill another character, then their power will stop working for a while. Why will it suddenly stop? Because the Gardiner Initiative has a secret weapon: an agent who can nullify powers.

None of the characters are aware of this and assume that the place is wired with some kind of technology to effect their powers because that's what the unit head told them.

Q• I'm thinking of joining this RPG, but am wondering - if I join now, do I get dragged in later in the day by agents, or just act like I've been here all along?
A• That's up to you. Many of the characters are being played as if they've been here for a few months to a few days so you can do that if you want. The maximum about of time your character could have been here is four months.

There are also characters who are being played as just coming into the unit and if you want to have your character be a new arrival, you can have them be brought into the unit the night of day 1 or wait for day 2.

Q• Care to explain how to use chatboxes??? >.> Pretty pls?
A• The first chat box that is white and green with the guests allowed sign is the Out of Character chat. It's the place where players & guests can talk.

The lower box which is gray and white with the sign that says IC Chat: characters only is the In Character chat box where the characters within the unit can chat with each other online.

    Q• Are plot pages mandatory?
A• No, they are completely optional. If you want to post one then you can and if you don't then you don't have to.

Q• Can our characters get material goods while in the unit? Like say for example my character wanted a hair dryer?
A• For common household goods, yes the characters can get them by putting in a request to the unit head. He'll approve most stuff except weapons and other dangerous and / or grossly impractical objects. If it's something you can find in average house they you don't have to check with me but if it is an unusual object, please comment here or PM to maker sure it's allowed.

Q• Can characters post in multiple threads?
A• Yes, as long as the threads are not occurring at exactly the same time. Regardless of your character's power, they cannot be in two places at the exact same time.

Q• Are the computers/television censored in anyway?
A• For incoming information, no they are not censored. For outgoing information, yes they are. What that means is that characters can look at whatever they want online or on television but they can't send any information out through email or phone or social network sites.

Q• Does this game have a posting order?
A• As a general rule no but it is considered polite to give other players a chance to post before you post again. Certain threads will have posting orders but these threads will be clearly marked.

Q• What happens if a character is dropped from the game?
A• If the character is abandoned by the player then they will be removed from the unit by the npc guards. Players can write that their characters have witnesses this.

Q• Do the characters have to do an introduction thread or a wake up thread when they first get to the unit?
A• No. When your character first gets to the unit, they will be greeted by the Unit Head Thomas Wilson who will explain that they've been brought here for their protection, for the public's protection and to learn about their power.

He will also tell your character that they can't go home or contact their friends/family outside the unit. After that the guards will show them to their cell.

Since this is the same scenario for all characters, there is no need to play it out each time. You can start your characters off anywhere and assumed that this meet and greet has already happened.

Q• What about clothes and stuff?
A• Clothes and other small things like shampoo, towels, etc will be provided for your character by the unit. These things will be in the cell when the character arrives. Objects and clothes belonging to your character from outside the unit can be found in the cells with the exceptions of vehicles or weapons.

Q• I'm just joining the game. Does my character have to be just arriving to or can they be at the unit for a while?
A• You character can be either just arriving or at the unit for a maximum of four months so far. It's up to you. If you are interested in playing a character who has been here longer than four months or was working with the Gardiner initiative prior to their mutation, please contact the mod. Exceptions made be made for current players.

Q• Do the characters know that the Gardiner Initiative is responsible for their mutations?
A• No. They have been told that the mutations happened naturally due to their genetics and the Gardiner Initiative is here to help them. Whether they want it or not.

Q• Do the characters have access to the unit head's files on the residents?
A• Level 4 characters have limited access while levels 1 to 3 do not. This may change for plot purposes but that will be decided by the mod. Please check with me before using the file information.

Q• Should players make a note if a thread is closed or not?
A• Yes because it would help me know what to archive.

Q• What happens if characters in a thread move from one place to another - do we continue on in the old thread or make a new one in the new location?
A•If the characters are moving to a different location then you'll have to close your current thread and open a new one.

I'm wondering if you could explain how the "Days" work a little more. For example, if it's Day 6, does that mean that it's been 6 days since The Unit officially kicked things off? Is it Day 6 of a 7-day week in July?

I just want to make sure that I correctly understand. Thank you!

It's Day 6 of a 7-day week in July. The unit itself has been operating for about six months in game already.
