Two Random Facts:
- He has never had a relationship nor has he ever been involved in a one night stand.
- He is very claustrophobic
Personality: Nathaniel has always been the person in the restaurant who tucks themselves into the corner booth and eats quietly, never speaking unless someone talks to him. If anyone asked his former classmates to describe him they'd more than likely stand there with a confused look on their face trying hard to remember who on earth he was. He's not reserved because he doesn't like people, he actually loves to be around people, but Nathan isn't the best at small talk or really any type of conversation. This shy attitude is the main reason he has never dated. Every time he sees someone he finds attractive he can't think of anything to say and when he does he ends up ruining it by stumbling over his words and blushing beet red.
Strangely enough, when he's alone or with someone he has known for a long time Nathan isn't shy at all. He dances and sings to music on the radio, will spontaneously grab one of his friends and twirl them around the room even when there is no music playing and can be just as outgoing as anyone else. But when someone he doesn't know enters the room he'll clam up and plop down onto a chair or busy himself with some time consuming task like trying to scrub away a smudge on a window that's been there for years. If someone does manage to get him to open up to them they'll find that he's a bit oblivious to certain things, can get lost in a matter of seconds and tends to throw himself completely into his work to where he forgets about everything aside from the stuff he is writing. Surprisingly, when he's interviewing for a journalism piece is one of the only times he can manage to have a complete conversation with a stranger although he's occasionally nervous then as well. He has a lot of energy despite his shyness and will go insane if someone tries to make him sit down for too long. This also causes him to fidget and squirm a lot when he's been doing the same thing for an extended period of time. To get rid of all the energy he usually runs every morning before work or every afternoon.
History: Nathan was born as the first and only child to a very rich, strict couple in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Both Anna and Daniel Tate had always wanted children since they had been raised in large families. While they planned to have many kids to fill their large home with sound and misplaced toys they had complications conceiving and Anna only managed to get pregnant once. Because of this, when Nathaniel was finally born the couple was extremely over protective of him. Every step he took towards something dangerous brought his mother flapping her hands and scooping him up away from the object even if it was a ridiculous thing to be nervous over such as a bouncy ball that was lying on the ground. Anna could only think about the dangers of Nathan swallowing the tiny thing or getting random germs from the ball. The main entertainment he received as a child? Being dressed in the best children's clothes money could buy and going to the toy store to pick out a toy that would then be sterilized completely before given to him to play with. Seeing as he was just a child none of it really mattered to him. His parents loved him and he was a very happy- if sheltered- child.
For the first chunk of his school years Nathan was home schooled per request by his mother. His father hired a slew of tutors to come by and teach him everything he needed to know as well as a few extras such as piano lessons. The only time he saw children his own age was when his mother's friends would bring their children over or when his mother would take him on the rare adventure to the park. Even then she hovered close by like a hawk just in case anything was to happen. The over-protectiveness and the lack of contact with other kids ultimately made him the shy person he is today. At home he was constantly jabbering on about random topics with his parents and with his tutors but the slightest sight of anyone new and he'd run off to his room to hide. Ann and Daniel tried their best to teach him without having to put him into public school. Ann taught Nathan to love literature and how to use words to write stories and intricate plot lines while Daniel showed him how take apart various appliances, fix them and put them back together; however, when he reached teenage years they relented and enrolled him in a public high school believing that it would look better on a college application if he went to an actual school to socialize with other teens.
In high school Nathan didn't actually socialize he more or less stayed in a desk near the teacher's own desk and spoke only when the teacher asked him a question. The fact that his parents still liked him to dress in suits or vests with dress pants didn't exactly help his case; however, he did manage to make two close friends who he could relax around. It was those two friends that he first came out to as bisexual in his senior year aside from his parents, they had known for a while and were accepting of his choices though still just as protective. Not many people at the school were of a different sexual orientation and those that were tended to hide it so it threw his friends for a loop and they shied away from him for a few weeks before coming to their senses and letting him know it was alright. Besides, it wasn't like he was going to act on any feelings he felt for people anytime soon his parents would have died of simultaneous heart attacks if he even thought about it.
His life after high school was just as uneventful although it did include one major breakdown on his mother's part. The woman had sobbed and thrown a dramatic fit when she and Daniel took Nathan to the airport so he could leave to go to a private university in Chicago. He went his entire college career focusing solely on his studies and only glancing at people he found attractive. After graduating he moved back home for a while and has lived there up until now. Nathan's always loved the idea of living near a beach and when he was contacted by a newspaper he had sent his resume to in the outer banks he was ecstatic. His parents weren't as happy and are still a bit upset with him, but nothing is going to stop him from moving to North Carolina now.
