I don't normally write notes during directions, so you know that this is
important. We have to bring a date to the whole Slughorn spiel -
daft, I know - and I was wondering if you'd like to go with me? It
wouldn't be anything romantic, of course.
Purely professional.
You could add it to your ever-growing resume.

Edgar,

Perhaps you shouldn't be writing notes during directions at all, "important" subject or not.

What about the queen of annoying bubbly? What's your Hufflepuff girlfriend doing that's so much more important than this daft party you invite me to? We hardly get along when we're working together academically, let alone socially.

What good would a daft party be on a resume, Edgar? Surely, you realize by now that parties do nothing for academics.

Perhaps you shouldn't tell me what to or what not to do. I know it's
your expertise, but you should try and spend your talents elsewhere.

Do you think you could refrain from referring to my girlfriend in that
way? Just because her thoughts are more focused on pleasant
conversation than her next insult doesn't make her bubbly.

If the knowledge will get you to accept my
invitation, she's tied up at some Hufflepuff party.
Really? This isn't getting along?

Haha, funny. Surely you realise that there's more to education
then just academia? How are we ever going to get to know the
practical component of our work if we just sit around and study all
the bloody time? I don't trust Slughorn. He's a former Slytherin. I
always feel like he's up to something. Don't you want to be at the
center of the action? If you're smart and care half a lick about the
wizarding world you'll take up my invitation.

Edgar,

Then perhaps you should take your talent for partying somewhere else.

Oh, yes, because she couldn't ever think of anything horrible. I can see how you two are such a perfect match. Obviously, you're a bubbly man, yourself, right?

I don't speak like this to most of my friends. Do you speak to Erna like this? I doubt she'd like it. Unless she likes it when you push her around.

What good will attending a party do for my future, Edgar? I have no intent of becoming a party planner or a professional housewife. And considering no other professions require party experience...

Regardless of our difference in opinions, I will accompany you to the party. I'd hate to see you make a fool of yourself more than you already have. Just promise me that you won't drink while we're there.

What I do in my spare time is none of your business. At least I've
made one or two attempts at human contact in the past year.

Do you have any concept of making connections for your future? I
thought you wanted to be Minister. Besides, you never know where
these people are going to be in five years. You might as well gather
information now while they're you're friends. In a few years they
might be your enemy and not so keen to give it up. Honestly, you're
at NEWT level. These are things you should really be thinking
about.

Well, obviously. A housewife isn't a professional. Still, it has to be
done. No need to get snippy about it. It is what it is.

Oh, thank Merlin I have you to save me from myself. Do yourself a
favour and don't do this because you want another Special Award for
Services to the School, okay? I'm trying to invite you to something.

I hope you know that there will be
social drinking at this party. Slughorn serves wine and brandy. You'll
be expected to drink. You should wise up and just do what you're
told in that department. He won't be asking you to pray to Salazar.

Edgar,

At least I don't have to be drunk to make human contact.

Edgar, I don't think that the Slug Club parties are where I'd find my enemies. Have you noticed that nearly all of the graduates who participated - other than one or possibly two - have gone on to do things that don't involve being the Minister's enemy? I have, and thus I can conclude that attending a Slug party would not improve connections with enemies.

You are often intolerably sexist, Bones.

And I have already accepted your offer. Do I need to beg you to attend? Or shall I just order a good little housewife type of woman to attend with you, instead? I hear the Hufflepuffs are just dying to get their greedy little hands on you.

Please tell me you did not just tell me to do as I'm told and drink. Need I remind you that there is always the choice to not drink the brandy? And even if you had commanded me to do something valid, the likelihood of me listening to your commands are about as likely as a blast-ended skrewt falling in love with a unicorn.
