The Gulches are only recently British; though Zamira and her immediate family grew up in England, the rest of the Gulch family remained firmly abroad. In recent years, following the Grindelwald war, the English Gulches have relocated back to Scandanavia; Zamira, however, refused to accompany them, being halfway through her education. As a consequence, being both purists and somewhat misogynistic, they sent Havelock, her second cousin and her betrothed, to watch over her.

Havelock, as one can expect of someone who follows his family's tenets of Grindelwald support, is not a particularly tolerant person, or one who is easy to get along with. Still rather accented from his life abroad and his years in Durmstrang, he's obviously foreign - and the fact that he's not exactly quiet about his beliefs hardly helps to endear him to the muggleborn and anti-Grindelwald populations at Hogwarts. A misogynist and a racist, he rarely interacts with anyone he perceives to be lower than himself, and has a tendency to actively sneer.

Though in many ways he is extroverted, arrogant and self-confident, he isn't all bad: he's an intelligent, capable student who values his education, and wishes to return to Scandanavia and involve himself in politics. As a result, he doesn't drink, play Quidditch or involve himself in much of the fun that other larger personalities around Hogwarts choose to indulge in. His interest in Zamira is genuine, and his concern, though overbearing and extremely irksome for her, is not out of any ill-bearing; he takes a very real interest in turning her into a proper lady, and into making her focus on her education. She is family - and, traditionally, the Gulches stick together.
