Lucretia admired her reflection in the mirror, quite pleased with herself. For all the migraines she’d gotten because of this Halloween Ball, at least she had managed a more than appropriate costume. Having been taught from an early age the importance of punctuality and impeccable grooming, Lucy had started getting herself ready before most of her roommates, which meant that while she could hear desperate shrieks erupting from the background, she had even some minutes to spare to herself.

The witch tried to relax, knowing full well that her nerves and her temper would probably be tested tonight. Sometimes, the teen felt as if the entire School was conspiring to drive her into an early grave, and she was quite sure that everytime she heard an ungodly Hufflepuff scream or outrageous hall fights, Lucy could almost be certain she was docking a month of life at least. And of course, darling Headmaster Dippet had certainly made her life no easier when insisting, nay, commanding, that she should go with Ignatius Prewett to the Halloween Ball. Lucy was certain the old man was senile and off his bloody rocker, particularly when she believed she caught him winking at her. As if he were doing her, Lucretia Black, some sort of favor!

Deep down, though, Lucy knew that he probably was. Her mother was jumping at the chance to get her oldest child betrothed, and the girl was certain Melania Black had already confectioned a list of reasonably respectable purebloods to escort her for the evening. Now, while already used to the idea that these whole cattle-like endeavors were standard for respectable and proper ladies such as herself, Lucy dreaded to spend an evening pretending to be interested in a pretentious imbecile. At least, she didn’t have to pretend anything around Iggy, as infuriating as he could be sometimes.

Glancing at the clock, the Head Girl stood up, gracefully making her way out of the Slytherin Dungeon, moving like the epitome of pureblood perfection she’d always been told to be, features as aloof as always. The fabric of her costume swayed elegantly with every step she took, her heels clicking delicately in the otherwise quiet dungeons. It was no surprise it had also been the Headmaster who had told them both at going to the Ball together meant that Ignatius had to escort her to the event and take her back to the Slytherin Dungeons. “Prewett?” She called out, not really able to distinguish properly in the badly lit halls if there was someone there besides her. Merlin, hopefully he wouldn’t be hungover.

Honestly, it was a wonder Ignatius hadn't gotten lost on his way through to the dungeons, with only a vague idea of where the Slytherin Dungeon actually was. He'd been given instructions by Lucretia only the other day, but as usual he'd zoned out halfway through her speech and had to pretend that he’d been  listening the whole time - he once made the mistake of admitting that he hadn't been listening to the Head Girl, and he was in no hurry to repeat it.

Eventually he did manage to find the entrance, spotting a group of costumed third years emerging and leaning against the wall opposite, trying to ignore the younger students, who kept looking back in his direction, a couple of them staring outright. It may or may not have had something to do with the fact that he was green, wearing a funny hat and copious amounts of kohl. Somehow, Ignatius had let himself get talked into changing his costume to the ball - originally he was set to go as a cowboy, and actually quite proud of the outfit he had put together - and yet he still found himself agreeing to attend as Osiris.

He must have been waiting at least five minutes, the odd aftertaste of the potion to turn him green still lingering in his mouth, when he heard the all too familiar sound of heels clicking down the passageway, getting louder as it grew closer. When Lucretia stepped out into the dimly lit corridor it took him a while to recognise her, she looked completely different (not to mention impressive) as Isis, it was quite obvious that the costume was an expensive one, but of course money probably wasn't something any of the Blacks had cause to worry about.

"Here, Black." Although over the past two months they had started to get used to one another's presence, 'Black' and 'Prewett' were still the most common forms of address between them, but at things seemed to have thawed out a little since the start of term, going to the dance together didn't seem like too much of a chore, not to Iggy at least. He made his way forward, long white robe swishing as he moved, the usual lazy grin appearing on his face. "I have to say, you do make a rather good Isis, Black." He offered his arm, inclined his head towards the nearby staircase. "Shall we?"

Glad that she wouldn’t have to wait awkwardly in the corridor while the other students departed for the Ball, Lucretia followed the source of the voice she distinctly recognized as Ignatius’s. Her directions to Slytherin dungeons had probably settled in, even if she tended to not really know when Prewett was really paying any attention to her at all.

Of course, things such as directions were soon forgotten when Lucretia looked at her classmate. Having been half expecting him to stick with his original idea of attending as a cowboy, she was pleasantly surprised to find that he had actually listened to her when she suggested he changed his costume to a more appropriate one to match hers.

She took the arm he offered gracefully and started walking alongside him. A rare, if small, smile lightened her features at his compliment. “Thanks, Prewett. Your Osiris costume looks good as well.” She said, paying attention to his green colored skin before settling in the staircase, although after seven years, she was fairly sure she could perfectly make it to the Great Hall with her eyes closed.

The Great Hall was already bustling with activity by the time they arrived, and Lucretia was sure to avoid catching any of her relative’s gazes. The last thing she needed was Walburga commenting on the myth of Osiris and ways of reenacting it. She wanted to have a relatively uneventful evening, if possible. “You don’t suppose Dippet expects us to go talk to him, do you?” She asked Ignatius as she took a glass of punch from a nearby table. If the Headmaster winked at her one more time she was going to start pulling her hair off in frustration.

He had been hoping the change in costume would be received fairly well, but Ignatius certainly hadn't been expecting a smile from Lucretia. It was small and brief and barely visible in the torchlit corridor, but it was a sign that maybe this evening wasn't going to be as bad as he had originally anticipated. It might even be fun, although that might be a little bit too much to ask of a Black.

The Great Hall was already crowded when they reached it, full of students in a vast array of colourful costumes, but the pair seemed to pass through easily, apparently a benefit of being Head Boy and Girl. Stopping to talk to a friend, he caught a glimpse of the Headmaster out of the corner of his eye, waving and frantically trying to catch his attention, and suddenly Ignatius was struggling to keep his composure, choking back a laugh and promptly steering Black and himself in the opposite direction.

"I hope not, or we'll be stuck with him the whole evening." He commented, laughing lightly and taking a swig of his own drink. Being a somewhat... experienced drinker, he could tell straight away that the punch had been spiked with something or other, but he wasn't about to mention it to Lucretia. Best leave her to figure that out herself, it may prove entertaining.

Lucretia was quite pleased that students had the good sense to allow her and Prewett to move freely around in the crowd. The sea of costumes would have proved astonishing, but all Lucretia could think of was how badly she wanted to have a quiet evening, without drunken fights or spectacular pranks.

She stood next to Ignatius in a statuesque fashion as he spoke to one of his acquaintances. Never really one to fake interest even when she was required to, Lucretia busied herself with a drink she delicately grabbed from a tray. She had spotted Walburga out of the corner of her eye and she feared even the slightest turn of her head would put her on her cousin’s field of vision.

The pumpkin juice tasted unusual, but the flavor was pleasant and left a warmth she wasn’t used to. Assuming the House Elves must have attempted a new recipe, she drank the rest of the glass as Prewett led her away from the manic looking Headmaster. The last thing she needed was to be chattered away to her grave by Dippet.

Feeling unusually warm and buzzy, Lucretia examined Ignatius from the rim of her cup. His costume was quite amusing, and for the first time in years, Lucretia Black erupted into a fit of giggles. Had they been in a quieter place, the Head Girl would have surely attracted glances, but her giggle got lost in the sea of laughter and chattering. “Merlin, Ignatius. Your costume is incredible."

Smiling, giggling, giving compliments - this version of Lucretia was much easier to get along with than the solemn, glaring one he was used to - obviously the 'pumpkin juice' was starting to take effect, and Ignatius wasn't going to complain. "I'm glad my hard work is appreciated! And of course yours is wonderful as well." He replied, chuckling a little. "Although I'm not really sure when my skin will go back to normal. I think I brewed the potion a little too strong." His brow furrowed briefly, but then a smile was back on his face. "D'ya think Professor Merrythought would notice if I turned up to Defence tomorrow still green?"

Finishing his first cup, he put it down on a nearby table and picked up another, along with a pumpkin-shaped pastry, which he took a bite of as he turned back to face the Head Girl, somehow managing not to get crumbs down his front for once. He began to speak to Lucretia again, but her attention appeared to be elsewhere, so he called out softly. "Black." And then a little louder, at which point he began to laugh, "Black! I think you're swaying." He placed a hand on her arm as if to steady her, his eyes sparkling with barely contained mirth. "Would you like to dance?" He asked, not really giving her any choice in the matter and steering her over to what appeared to be the dancefloor, where many students seemed to have had the same idea.

Lucretia smiled placidly at the compliment, contrasting dramatically to the austere expressions she customarily displayed. All of her mother’s stern comments about the way proper ladies should conduct themselves now seemed faraway and blurry, paling in comparison to the loud and contagious music, the bright colours and the sweet and oddly delightful pumpkin juice. Ignatius’s skin seemed vibrant, and she somehow managed to refrain herself from attempting to rub it off with her thumb. “She might wonder if you’re attempting to switch Houses.” She said with a laugh at the thought of Ignatius, clad in Gryffindor colours but with Slytherin colored skin.

Her attention was soon lost, and Lucretia’s gaze began to wander, settling in the colorful costumes and the dancing students. Everything looked beautiful, almost as if under the power of an enhancing charm, because Lucretia couldn’t quite pinpoint another Halloween Ball like this one. For the most part, every year Lucretia huddled with her brother and cousins in abandoned corners, exchanging pleasantries with other proper Slytherins. The dark haired girl tended to keep to herself, but she felt buzzy and more alive than she had felt in years. Blinking away her thoughts, Lucretia fixed her gaze in her green companion again, completely missing the fact that he had to raise his voice to call her attention. “Don’t be silly, Ignatius. Why would I be swaying? I feel wonderful.” She sentenced with a placid but somewhat unfocused smile. In fact, she was aware that her stance wasn’t as solid as usual, but the gentle lulling of her position felt pleasant, and not something to be worried about.

The girl walked complacently, instead of protesting or flat out excusing herself. Lucretia wasn’t the best dancer, and most often than not, any movements perceived as fluid and graceful by onlookers were the product of rigorous practice. Instead of feeling tense or self-conscious, as she often did on a dance floor, Lucretia felt light, graceful and like the best dancer. Her movements lacked her usual precision, but she hadn’t stepped on Ignatius’s toes or her dress. The music was upbeat and unlike the stiff waltzes she was used to dancing, but she somehow managed to follow the Gryffindor’s lead, ocassionally bursting into laughter whenever she tripped over herself. “I never have this much fun dancing!” She said over the boisterous environment, suddenly feeling the need to talk all she could.
