"He might," Cedrella agreed tentatively. She didn't know much about Orion, he kept very much to himself. His pairing with Walburga was considered by and large to be opportunistic not only for furthering the line, but for soothing Walburga herself. It was widely agreed in the family that he would absorb the worst of her tantrums without rising to it himself. "But best to keep such matters private just the same, I'm sure."

This was delivered gently, but with a degree of firmness with which Cedrella hoped to convey some finality. She didn't want Walburga leaping to her defence over Septimus Weasley, and she didn't want her to embarrass herself either. It was one thing to snap like a terrier at Roberta Weasley, it was another to fight a losing battle so publicly there was no recovery. Cedrella worried that eventually she would pick a fight that would be too much for them to cover up; it was necessary to be adept at that sort of thing yourself. Walburga's passion and her open hatred, she thought, were to be her downfall.

If Cedrella had been better at Divination at school she might have directed her concerns more toward herself, but as it was it was easier to imagine Walburga's potential doom than it was her own inevitable one.

"And what else is new?" she asked, striving to change the subject. "Let's not worry about Weasleys any more. Tell me about your classes."

Even Walburga could recognise the firmness in Cedrella's voice, and while she didn't agree with keeping such things private - imagine, a filthy blood traitor slandering the Noble and Most Ancient House of Black in such a terrible, awful, cruel manner! - she nevertheless would listen to her older cousin, if with hesitance and never forgetting the fact that a Weasley had said something so horrible about her family. If the opportunity ever arose, she would remind everyone of it.

But she accepted the change of subject with what passed for grace, for Walburga. Instead of demanding that Cedrella march up to Dippet's office now and call for Weasley's immediate dismissal from the castle, she took a sip of tea and sighed, lifting the spoon from the saucer and stirring distractedly. Her classes really were an uncomfortable topic: Walburga did enjoy learning, and was a talented witch when she applied herself, but it was difficult to concentrate when she was surrounded by mudbloods and filth on all sides and even, in some classes, expected to work with them. Group projects ended more often than not with a trip to the hospital wing in tears - and the distress was hardly faked.

"The same as they always are," she admitted, looking down at the cup and saucer in her lap. "All the filth in this castle truly makes it difficult to learn, Cedrella. How am I supposed to work knowing there is a mudblood at the desk next to me?" Usually she managed to box herself in during classes until she was surrounded by other Slytherins or other purebloods, but some days her efforts just weren't successful.

"Further proof of the calibre you are," Cedrella said simply. "Really, where would we be if there was no one to be greater than, Walburga? You should comfort yourself with the knowledge that you are able to work in such conditions with the grace and poise that only a Black can. Under the circumstances you cope admirably."

It pained Cedrella, sometimes, to be so willing to play into this concept -- not particularly because she didn't believe in it, but because she was almost certain that she didn't belong to it. She was almost jealous of her younger cousin for the ease with which she fit the schema of the Black family -- Cedrella had always imagined she was striving to meet invisible, impossible standards; Walburga seemed to deem them hers for the setting.

It was not exactly because she would have preferred to be in Walburga's position, because Cedrella knew she had more to contribute to the world than just miserable domesticity and and a life of social obligations, but because it was so easy for her. Because somehow if Cedrella was being difficult it was a crime against their ancestors, but if Walburga threw an enormous tantrum and set the cat amongst the pigeons by crying out for Hogwarts to be cleansed it was somehow endearing to them, as though she were a one year old with a face covered in pudding.

She resented that she had to work so hard to fit into her own family, but it didn't give her license to be vindictive. It didn't stop her from loving Walburga and the rest of them anyway. It might have been easier if she could have been embittered enough to cut herself off from it, but she wasn't. She didn't want to see her cousin in any trouble, and the more she considered her situation the more she wanted to advise her just to keep her head down and avoid confrontation.

Perhaps that was just because it would mean Cedrella was never put in so difficult a position again -- but her tendency towards self-preservation was neither here nor there.
