With the trauma of the previous night so fresh in his mind and with a poor night's sleep under his belt thanks entirely to it, Foras had not been feeling his best when he'd slipped out of bed that morning. Having briefly and uncharacteristically scathingly expressed his distaste to Decimus, he had sloped off for his morning shower and taken some solace in scrubbing away the filth from his body. While he may have been no Walburga Black and her compulsive tendencies, he was certainly not accustomed to the dirty feeling that had followed being accosted by the largest tart in school. He had scoured his prefect badge, though he knew there had been no need for it, and even now he fancied he could still smell her cheap perfume. It was revolting, it really was, and though an entire night had gone by, the easily-offended boy was definitely not over it.

But, then, that was surely at least part of the purpose of classwork. It effectively distracted him from many things, from the nagging pain (which was thankfully absent today, and had been for half the week) in his stomach to his inappropriate feelings in regard to another male to the incident with Fitzwinka. By lunchtime, he had thawed out considerably, and though he'd never be near just laughing about it - because, by all accounts, that was not who Foras was - he was willing to let it pass without further complaint. He was willing to let bygones be bygones and simply chalk the girl's behaviour up to the unfortunate disability of 'being a savage'.

Then, of course, he'd seen the Crockett girl in a corridor as he made his way to his meeting with John, and though he wasn't sure whether he'd imagined it or not, he was sure she'd winked at him. Suddenly, all the nervousness that had bubbled at seeing John again (although, admittedly, that had calmed down into an absent sort of lust over the last few weeks) was drowned out in a fire of pure, unadulterated hatred, and he found himself taking the steps much too quickly. Turning out outside the Room with a step that was almost impatient, he made his way inside and, for once, did not immediately find himself a seat from which to do homework. Instead, he remained standing. He did not pace, for that would have been an inexcusable lack of self-control, but instead placed his bag down in a very controlled movement and remained standing, adopting the pretence of eyeing the stitching of a tapestry.

He was really very cross.

After nearly dropping all his things on the stairs and having to chase down several sketches of the lawn, lake and Lisette Scamander, John found himself in something of a mood. Though John had not been having any issues with girls (aside from being unable to string together anything resembling intelligent thoughts when Roberta was around him), he had not had a very good week himself; as a matter of fact, it had only been getting worse and worse. However, after having backed out of their last arranged meeting because of his lost Charms essay, he did not have it in him to call this one off. One sleeve of his sweater rolled up to make room for a bandaged forearm and a few odd bruises on him besides, John made his way to meet Rosier, avoiding looks the whole way.

Sketches in the bag over his shoulder and a rather large canvas tucked under his good arm, it had taken him a little longer to get there than he'd thought. Nearly fifteen minutes late and rather unaware that he was, he heaved a breath before actually opening the door and looking the other over. Offering a bright smile, as John always did, he set the canvas on a nearby table and tucked his hair back behind his ears. "Hello, Foras," he greeted, and only then did he glance at the time. "I'm - sorry I'm late," he stammered slightly, in a rush.

Fortunately for John, Foras had actually been too busy concentrating on both the tapestry and his own far-too-intense emotions to even notice the time. It was a curious lapse in behaviour, but it was at least an explainable one - there was nothing he needed to hide from himself in his utter loathing of the Slytherin Quidditch Captain. His hands were fastened firmly behind his back when he heard the door open, and though he processed that someone must have come in, it wasn't until the other actually spoke that he managed to remind his feet that they should move; it was terribly bad mannered not to acknowledge a person when they entered a room, and worse not to acknowledge a greeting.

"Hello, John," he replied, without any prior thought, and was dismayed to find that his voice was stiffer than usual; he endeavoured to correct it as he tried to concentrate on everything he should be. His first glance, despite himself, seemed to slide straight off the other boy and to the clock, where he immediately became rather alarmed at himself for losing a whole fifteen minutes of his day. Finding that he couldn't be cross at John for the transgression because he hadn't noticed it himself, he only inclined his head after a moment of working to keep his face the mask it always was. It wasn't that difficult - he was, after all, perfectly used to it.

Managing to make himself look back, he gave a stiff, one-shouldered shrug without unclasping his hands from behind his back. "I was late myself," he lied, immediately unsure of why he was doing it but not questioning his own motives too deeply. Slowly losing some of the tension to the tightly-wound spring of anger buried within him, he suddenly noticed the bandage and resisted the urge to raise an eyebrow. "Are you alright?" He gestured with a slight head movement to the arm; his fingers were still digging grooves in his wrists.

He might have asked how he was, but, as the other glanced up to the clock, John was still looking over him. While it was something like stealing glances because Foras was not looking back, he was taking no pains to hide it; after all, he had no reason to. By the time he shrugged, John was sure that something was off, and glanced away at almost the same moment that the other looked back to him - John was never the type that fared well with direct and extended eye-contact, even among close friends.

Relieved somewhat that he was not the only one late, he glanced toward his arm as Foras seemed to notice it. Briefly, he glanced up. "Yes," he answered, voice coming out almost soft. "It's only a bite." Here John paused, as though considering something, and then, again pushing at his hair, he ventured further. "Are you?" he asked, hesitantly and seeming rather uncertain. He was not, after all, entirely sure that he was reading the other's body language and expressions correctly at all.

"A bite?" He answered, caught marginally off-guard by the reply and wondering what it might be from. It occurred to him that he had abandoned the subjects that might lead to him receiving a bite from anything; herbology and care of magical creatures were both dirty and had the unfortunate addition of the wild factor - the animals and plants involved had minds of their own, and sometimes there was simply no controlling them. And, of course, there was the fact that Rosier had never appreciated the company of animals, nor the feeling of dirt under his fingernails. In many ways, he was a particularly prissy character - it just rarely showed through the iron mask of respect and civility.

Barely noticing the lack of eye contact (another black mark against his temper), he was further surprised at his own well-being being questioned. So surprised, in fact, that there was only a minute hesitation before the odd earnestness and harmlessness of the Ravenclaw boy had lulled whatever part of him it was that was always in guarded suspicion of everyone around him. Without warning, his mouth decided it wanted to talk, and there was no intervening communique from his brain to stop it. "Well -- no, not particularly. Do you know Fitzwinka Crockett?" His tone was odd in that it was as flat as usual - though, perhaps, the stiffness remained.

Uncomfortably nodding, John pushed his sweater sleeve up a bit further and glanced over his bandages again. The odd itching that Beery had assured him was normal had him, for paranoid and almost panicked moments throughout the day, wondering if they'd actually stopped the flesh-eating plant at all. Trying not to pale at the thought, and trying even harder not to itch at his sore arm, he raised his eyes a few moments later to think for a moment.

Because the girl was in his year, he did know her by name, but that was about the extent of it. To his recollection, he'd never had what would qualify as an actual conversation with her; as a rule, he avoided Purebloods. They made him terribly nervous, and, being John, he really didn't need to be any more awkward or clumsy than his default. "Not really," he answered, taking his bag from around his shoulder and setting it down. Quietly, he wondered what sort of issue Rosier might have with her; perhaps, he thought absently, they were dating. "I mean, yes. I know - of her," he added, though he was quite oblivious to her reputation. Quietly and expectantly, he looked at him, though his head was turned slightly, as though to make eye-contact an easier task for him.

Fixing his eyes on the bandage in a distracted sort of fashion, as though meeting John's eyes for too long might remind him that this was not at all an appropriate conversation to be having with a painter for whom he was already struggling with inappropriate feelings for, Rosier didn't bother taking a moment to formulate his response. Usually cool, patient, taciturn and not at all prone to allowing his unfavourable opinions of others to slip, he nonetheless couldn't help himself. Being accosted had really affected him that much. It was almost impressive. Of course, being made to feel subconsciously at ease by the other boy wasn't helping either - but at least he didn't have to ever acknowledge that. Explaining away the loss of temper later, however, would be much more difficult.

"Yes. She has quite the reputation, I understand," he began, quietly, and paused only momentarily as he dragged his eyes to the cuff of his jacket and adjusted it. "And entirely deserving. Yesterday --" he paused again, because the sheer ridiculousness of what he was going to say struck him. "Yesterday, she attempted to get out of a detention by propositioning me."

Wondering briefly what he meant by reputation, making a mental note to ask Percy - no, Lisette - later, he just continued looking. Eyes rounded, though that was an expression he often wore, perpetually half-engaged and often confused as he was, John nodded a little. It was fair to say that he was used to people telling him things - some people, he didn't even know at all. He had been told on more than one occasion that he was easy to talk to, and it seemed that things just... slipped out when he was around. People often felt comfortable talking to John, perhaps for his skill at making others feel like they were in the right without actually saying much at all.

Finally realizing what he'd meant when he referred to her alleged reputation, John's eyebrows shot up, and he couldn't help his mouth opening. "Oh," he said, almost incredulous, after a moment of just looking blank. "What happened?" It was only a few seconds later that he realized that he probably shouldn't have asked; it honestly wasn't any of his business, and he'd hate for Foras to think he was nosy - but he really was curious now.

Glancing to the side before he finally made eye contact again, Foras released a breath he didn't realise he'd been holding, working fingers in a circle around a wrist that was now aching thanks to how hard he'd been gripping it earlier.
"Oh, she," he paused again, careful about his speech even when it seemed to him to be coming out in a bemused, angry rush. "She was on her way out of the common room after hours. I wasn't even going to discipline her at first, only tell her to return, but then she implied I had been..." He couldn't help a wince of annoyance passing his brow. "Engaging in illicit activity with another pupil," he managed, her exact words translated into proper speech by his tongue and his voice dropping a couple of degrees as though there were people nearby who might be listening. "When I warned her against such slander, she made the invitation that if I hadn't, perhaps I wouldn't mind doing so with her." There was a clear note of revulsion to his voice now.

Eyebrows somehow arched even further now, John edged very quietly forward as the other's voice lowered. It was still rather surprising, he thought, being greeted with this; he privately thought that it must have bothered Foras quite a bit. His readiness to continue had him gaining a bit of confidence though, and he felt even more curious as he continued - it seemed more morbid curiosity than anything though, and he leaned against the arm of a couch nearby, half sitting on it.

Arms folding lightly over his chest, he actually seemed rather scandalized himself, as though he couldn't quite believe it. While he was not very refined or at all knowledgeable about the standards that Purebloods were meant to adhere to, he had an idea that perhaps Winky Crockett was not up to par. Looking rather incredulous still, he only encouraged further, rather characteristically. "What did you say?"

Finally managing to still his hands, though his knuckles remained white and tense with still-pent-up frustration and bemusement, he only shook his head lightly for a moment. Feeling able to continue after a moment that did not linger long enough to become awkward, he glanced back at John and narrowed his eyes slightly.
"I gave her detention and told her to get back to bed," he replied, straight-forward and honest; it made him feel slightly better to remember that her uncouth actions had not been without their serious repercussions. Still, the vindication did not last long; her wording, he thought, would haunt him for far too long. "She even made direct reference to a deviant act," he informed him, eyes averted to the side and voice quiet and disbelieving; honestly, he couldn't imagine the ill-breeding that would force that out of a woman.

Nodding once as though to agree with what he'd done, if only because the tone had made him slightly nervous for all its straight-forwardness (which, though he was used to from Percy, was a different, more serious and intense brand altogether), John continued to sit against the arm of the chair. Looking over him and feeling a little worse for how tense the other seemed, if nothing else, he quietly folded his arms and decided not to ask after him; it wasn't as though this was the first time someone had done something like this. More than he was a good secret keeper, he was a good listener, and sometimes that was enough. Quite the opposite of Foras, he seemed to make no effort to mask his own expression, even as disbelief gave way to a brief cringe. A hand came up hesitantly to adjust one side of his sweater.

"I can understand why she has a reputation, then," he blurted out, almost under his breath, and regretted it a moment later. Feeling like he was being a bit uncharitable -- perhaps due to how offended he felt by the story -- and clearing his throat, he spoke again a little more decisively a moment later. "I meant -- I can't believe she did that," he corrected, and then swallowed hard. That honestly didn't sound much better, but he could see no reasonable way of taking either back; guiltily, he averted his eyes briefly.

"Yes," he replied, slightly belatedly, apparently not at all bothered by the slight rudeness - especially as he'd been the first one to bring it up. "I, too, can see why she has a reputation," he clarified a moment later, having realised that something else had been said in the interim but ignoring it instead; he wasn't interested in politeness at this particular point in time. Besides, savages like Winky Crockett hardly deserved it afforded to them, especially after such flagrant abuse of rules - both moral and school.

Taking a breath and attempting to relax slightly, he made a conscious effort at dismissing his rage. "I cannot fathom why her parents have allowed her to get away with such flagrant misbehaviour for so long," he commented, slightly wonderingly. "Or why she thinks it is acceptable behaviour for a young lady."

Nodding a little, this revelation making John raise his eyebrows, he gave it some thought himself. There were no daughters in the Homme family, but he still could imagine the reaction his strict father might have had if he were to catch word of such behavior from a woman. A serious, quiet man at the best of times, his father had a way of being severe and intimidating without really even trying -- this was a necessity when one raised four boys, John imagined. The thought of his potential reaction was enough to worsen his posture slightly, and he actually shrank a little as he continued to nod.

"Maybe they aren't exactly -- maybe they don't know how she acts," he offered feebly, and gave the subject some thought a few moments later. That didn't seem likely at all, considering what a close-knit little community Purebloods seemed to be; he shrugged by way of dismissing his own reply. "Or, um," he hesitated, and then shook his head. "That sounds awful."

Agreeing with a sharp nod, Foras was given to a short, contemplative silence a moment later, rage exhausted and now just on the cusp of realising how rude and forward he'd been, he was caught in a second or two of utter horror at himself. Unable to tell whether or not it was his own frustrations, himself slipping into comfort around John, or John's general openness that had caused him to spill out his horror, he made sure to carefully smooth his face out. His heart now beating oddly quickly, he mechanically untensed his shoulders and brushed a hand briefly and needlessly through his hair in a strangely fidgety gesture that he cursed himself for internally only a moment later.

"I do apologise," he offered, seating himself rather abruptly and keeping his back as straight as ever. "I did not mean to dampen your afternoon with my gossip," he continued, apologetic and slightly stiff; he didn't know what the hell he'd been thinking, to unload like that.
