Though very much like her sister in the face, it is clear from a glance that the two are non-identical twins; while this doesn’t keep people from mistaking the two Rosmertas, it is something of a comfort to the both of them. After all, her sense of identity is very strongly tied in to her appearance, perhaps one of the reasons she is so fastidious in maintaining it. She spends a great deal of time on her appearance, and is groomed and pressed at almost all times; being dirty or ruffled is a rare sight on her, and surely is indicative that she will be in a terrible mood.

Rather than her sister’s somewhat curly blonde hair, Katie’s is very long, slightly wavy and red. Very vain where her hair is concerned, she braids it often but otherwise seldom puts it up. She has a rather delicate, pale complexion and is known for looking quite sweet in expression and manner - even if this is contrary to a few of her innermost qualities. Stubborn and exclusive or not, Katie has large green eyes, a pleasant smile, a roundish face and a button nose. She is often regarded as the prettier twin, a fact she is well aware of and careful to maintain. Whether her superiority is actually due to grooming or natural beauty though, it is hard to say, especially because their faces are so similar; Katie, for one, would never admit to thinking she was the prettier of them anyway.

Though firmly resting on the small side for her age (she is quite short, but hopefully not for long), there is a wiriness to Katie that comes of the occasional need to defend herself. Rarely does she actually fight, preferring to have others do that for her, but any bruise or scratch is covered with care or taken care of by her friend. She couldn’t and wouldn’t risk a visit to the hospital wing, whether she had to suffer through the hurt of whatever injury or not. That said, there is hardly a mark or scar on her, save for a few freckles that even lemon juice can’t seem to rid her of.

Most people do not know Katie very well, and this is mostly by her own choice. Though friendly and likable upon first meeting, people come to find that there is also a distant nature to her. She is not forthright in her disinterest in other people and befriending them, but it becomes clear nonetheless when she does not become personally invested (or personally anything) with anyone outside her family and her clique. For all of the time she spends making sure she is charming and sweet and put-together upon first glance, Katie is still a very private and judgemental person - having the mother she does, this is not a fact she is particularly proud of. Generally, aside from her cleanliness and dislike for surprises, there isn’t much that people find unlikeable about the Hufflepuff.

Those who know Katie for what she is are few and far in-between, especially given that even her own twin sister does not know her as well as some. Outwardly sweet and unbiased, she seems like the popular sort from a glance. There is even a slight aloofness to her casual, kind remarks that comes with someone comfortable with maintaining only the friends she has. The appeal is not decreased much by this slight distance, and some even consider it even more of a draw; the fact that she does not directly address her disinterest in others seems to make for a lot of misunderstandings, particularly where boys are concerned.

By those who do know her quite well (read: the clique), she’s known for making snap judgements and sticking to them far longer than most others would. She imagines herself very good at seeing people for who they ‘really are’, and has no trouble finding reasons not to like almost anyone. Katie’s tendency to find faults in others seems almost purposeful, and it’s sometimes like she’s just making up reasons not to like people she isn’t familiar with - and quite honestly, she is.

Friendly and even somewhat complimentary upon first meeting, Katie seems like a generally nice, rule-abiding girl, but is, despite her polite demeanor, a very private and a little distant. Even for all her charming and sweet mannerisms, Katie is rather far from the unassuming persona she puts forth, capable of becoming both vindictive and even vicious. She puts a lot of effort into her reputation and into her affected friendly nature; as a matter of fact there aren’t many people who can say that Katie’s not always been kind to them - and those who do are normally just working on a hunch. Her anger is as private as anything else, and normally taken out using passive-aggressive means - and she all the while is insisting that she has absolutely no reason to be upset with anyone, and so why would she be doing something unkind on purpose? To this end, she can come off as overly apologetic on occasion, though this is more of a passive-aggressive means of making others feel guilty for taking offense.

Inclined to planning and careful forethought, she is very detail-oriented and fussy. This can be both a strength and a weakness for her because she is a perfectionist to her core - even if this does not necessarily translate to her essay-writing. Though that sort of thing seems to come naturally, there is a general and intense concern to do with her grades (and her schedule, her appearance, her friends, her reputation and everything in between) that gets in the way of everyday life more than occasionally. It’s fair to say that Katie becomes easily engrossed with minor details, often to the point of developing tunnel vision and missing out entirely on the big picture. She is obsessive by nature, and though is often fixating on one thing or another, never seems to come off as more than marginally fussy; this is possibly to do with the manner in which she goes about correcting all her ‘wrongs’: cheerfully, and as though she isn’t bothered much at all.

On a similar note, she is almost the same way with her personal relationships. It isn’t uncommon for her to seek revenge on others who have slighted her, no matter how minorly, in passive-aggressive and long-lasting ways. Dislike is another thing she focuses on perhaps a bit too strongly, and she finds it very difficult to forgive the faults in other people - this is likely because she has little reason to. She fell in with a group of girls early in her school years, and is rather set in her ways because of it; having them and Dorothy, she really sees no reason to drop her finicky nature when it comes to who she associates with, and none of her current associates seem to begrudge her this quality. In fact, it is both enforced and encouraged in a few of them; her own pickiness and judgemental nature is notorious within the group, much like Violet’s, but is not generally known or referred to outside of it.

Among friends, that kindness exhibited publicly is actually turned quite genuine. Loyal above most else, perhaps because it was a virtue impressed upon her endlessly by her mother, she can’t think of much that would deter her from staying by any of her friends or family. Using her charm and ability to lie convincingly to wheedle those she loves out of trouble they’re in is only one display of affection, and perhaps one of the most meaningful; after all, it is her sticking her own neck out on the line for them. Generous and complimentary among them as well, there is something more frank and generally different to her nature; though she never quite drops her effeminate and very slightly false manner of movement and speech, it is somewhat lessened in private. Laughs are more genuine, disagreements are more direct and grudges are generally very short-lived; generally speaking, Katie is a much better person with her friends than she is with anyone else, partially including her own twin.

HISTORY

Both Katherine and Dorothy, non-identical twins, were born on the 28th of September into a Pureblood family. Though not necessarily blood traitors, the Rosmertas were a bit fixed in their ways - and both girls were expected to marry well. Both grew up fairly ignorant of the muggle world, best friends who were satisfied to concern themselves with other trivial and frivolous pursuits. Having lost their father to illness at the age of two, neither was terribly affected by it - their mother, however, always impressed upon them the man that their father was. Working doubly hard to raise them properly, luckily not having to take on anything so scandalous as a job because of their small fortune, she had practically all the time in the world to devote to her two little girls.

Growing up with a twin was never something Katie seemed to mind, and was in fact something she embraced as good luck. The two were the best of friends, often excluding others and seeming to be speaking a whole other language for all their inside jokes, up until their sorting when the two were rudely separated. It was perhaps Katie’s loyal and hardworking nature that landed her in Hufflepuff, but it was certainly no amount of true friendliness. However, she acted the part, all the while resenting most girls she met because they were not Dorothy. It was only in meeting Catriona McCormack, the first muggleborn she’d ever associated with at any length, that she seemed to get over this misfortune. The two were quick to become very unlikely friends, filling in the gaps where the other was lacking.

In part, this drove a wedge between Katie and Dorothy - the latter being a Slytherin gradually became more and more a cause for concern with her sister. This distrust of most other Slytherins (often assuming the worst of them, fearing that they would all poison Dorothy into a purist) has caused a fair amount of tension between them, particularly because she has been known to privately express distaste for the friends she’s made in her own house. This was, of course, very hypocritical of Katie; her friends are some of the best known hair-pullers and detention-getters around.

Faring particularly well in her studies, she seems to have passed through classes with something like ease. Though she does study a fair amount and she does put quite a bit of effort into the projects she does, Katie is naturally a very intelligent sort - most of her professors don’t doubt that she will do very well on her OWLS and NEWTS. Since first year, she’s been around the top of her class, and rarely seems to be at a loss for answers during class.
