For an incredible athlete, Hamish has always been, well, scrawny. He doesn't have the muscle mass of a beater, nor the flexibility of a keeper, but he is lithe, and that's always given him an advantage over other chasers. He's always been tall for his age, with long limbs and quick reflexes. His skin is pale, almost translucent in many ways, and spotted with freckles on his arms and chest. As a practical joke, his sister Kirya once took a quill with ink and connected all his freckles as he slept. Hamish has been self conscience of the spots ever since.

Hamish doesn't have the face of a "man," per se -- much to the happiness of his mother, he still looks like the little boy she tucked into bed each night. With boyish features, Hamish struggles to impress girls his age, who all seem to be more infatuated with a real "man's man." Hamish sports soft and messy brown hair, landing right above his eyes and in a constant state of disarray. No matter how many times he runs his fingers through it, his hair constantly looks like he's stuck his head out in a wind storm. Hamish's eyes are a dark blue, with a grayish tint to them. He's been told that most of his emotions are expressed through his eyes, but he's not sure if he really believes it. What he does know for sure, though, is that he has his mother's lips: pink and pouty. He has the lips of a woman and the face of a boy, and Hamish is waiting for the moment where he looks like all the older wizards girls his age fantasize over. Unfortunately for him, that day doesn't seem to be coming anytime soon.

For Hamish's first three years at Hogwarts, he was known for very little. He was intelligent, excelled in his classes, but he was shy and reserved. His close friends consisted of his teammates on the Ravenclaw Quidditch team, and his even closer friends were the ones that, like himself, were benched most of the season. For the students that did know him, Hamish was a nice boy, perhaps too nice. He enjoyed helping his peers with their studies, because at least he could control his own grades, whereas he couldn't always control what went on at the Quidditch pitch.

Everything changed Hamish's fourth year, when during an all important game against Slytherin, one of the older chasers took a bludger to the head. Swallowing his nerves, Hamish was told to get on his broom (or as he remembers it: "MacFarlan, get on yer fuckin' broom and get yer arse up here!"). While he surely didn't win the game solely for Ravenclaw, he did play exceptionally well (though he felt like he was going to vomit the entire time) and from that moment on, Hamish was on the team for real.

From his very first class, Hamish has always excelled in his studies. He's hardworking and persistent, and enjoys a good challenge. While he spends most of his time improving his Quidditch game for other people (Llewllelyn, his parents, his teammates) schoolwork was something that he could do for himself. Each positive comment or perfect grade back from his teacher was an achievement that Hamish kept for himself, and himself only. No one helped him receive that grade, no teammate or crazy captain. As much pressure as Hamish felt his parents put on him to be the best, they stayed far away from his academic life. He always felt something therapeutic about studying alone in the library after a particularly grueling practice, because as much as he feared having his Quidditch position taken away from him, his grades were his, and his alone.

If there's one thing that Hamish wishes he could change about himself, it would definitely be the anxiety that has seemed to settled itself nicely into his stomach, and refused to leave henceforth. If Hamish were to suddenly up and say "I'm done with Quidditch. Done." he wouldn't know how his parents -- specifically his father -- would react. He'd like to imagine they'd be disappointed for a day or two, but realize what a great person their son is, even without Quidditch. But Hamish isn't so sure that would be their reaction, and he isn't willing to find out. The pressure put on him by his parents and his friends is enough to make his head spin, and sometime he wonders if it's all worth it. Other times, he wonders if it's just him. And yeah, he thinks it might just be. But Hamish has never been an introspective person in that way, and so he allows the pressure to continue to slowly cripple him. In a way, the pressure has caused him to excel. With every time Hamish gets the quaffle through a hoop, he attributes it to his incredible desire -- no, need -- to make people proud of him. He doesn't like to imagine what would happen if he let people down. That's just one thought Hamish can't bring himself to mull over.

Putting aside any personal demons Hamish may face, he does have a knack for looking perfectly content on the outside. And truly, he is happy. When Hamish is able to put Quidditch aside for a moment, he feels like any other teenage boy at Hogwarts. He's always been on the quiet side, but friendly nonetheless. Though Hamish comes from a pure blood line, he is by no means on the same level as families such as the Blacks -- and for that reason, blood type means little to him. Hamish has a hard time saying "no," again wanting to please everyone around him in every way he can. He tends to put others before himself, often to the detriment of his own well being. For example, if a friend were to ask him for assistance with a class, Hamish would easily set aside his own work to help them with their own. Hamish has a burning desire to be liked and appreciated, and highly admires Dai Llewellyn for being the opposite -- in many ways, Dai doesn't seem to give a fuck about other people, and Hamish wishes he could feel that way, too.

For Ewan MacFarlan, the birth of his first daughter, Adah, was a blessing. The birth of Kirya was a surprise. Lee was a wonder. And by the time Noelle was born, Ewan had lost all hope. He loved his four daughters with all his heart -- they, along with their mother, Rea, had brought more happiness into his life than anything else in the world. And yet, none of his daughters showed any interest in athletics, or fishing, or even just getting a little dirty now and then. Occasionally he could convince Kirya to ride a broom, but after a couple of minutes she would dismount and run to her sisters, eager to play with their dolls and assist their mother in the kitchen. They were all good girls, obedient to a fault, pretty as could be with gentle dispositions and kind hearts. But Ewan felt outnumbered, with no one to share his interests with or share true quality time. He wanted a son, more than anything he wanted a baby boy. But his track record was poor, and the more he thought about it, the more he feared yet another baby wrapped in a pink blanket.

On January 23rd, 1927, Ewan was presented with a baby. Dark brown tufts of hair and murky blue eyes failed to distract Ewan from what he noticed first: the blue blanket that swaddled his fifth child. Named Hamish Gael, for Rea's paternal grandfather, Ewan took an interest in his son's life he dared not show any of his other children. From the moment he was born, Hamish was the light of his father's life. As his mother's final child, she loved him dearly, but she had always been more judicial in the treatment of her children. Ewan was not. Hamish's sisters knew from day one that he was their father's favorite. There was a bit of resentment from time to time, but in the strangest way, Hamish had them all wrapped around his finger. And to be honest, he hadn't a clue how he managed to make it happen.

Ewan exposed his son to Quidditch before he could walk, much less ride a broom. While his sisters read books about princesses being rescued from evil witches and wizards, Hamish was instead given books such as The Greatest Quidditch Matches Of The Past 300 Years and Your Broomstick: Maintaining It From Tip To Tail. In many ways, Ewan was lucky. The only thing Hamish loved more than Quidditch was pleasing his father, and at that, he excelled. They spent hours bonding over Quidditch matches -- specifically, the Magpies -- and strategy. For every Magpie match his father took him to, Rea would present him with a home cooked meal. While Ewan treated his son like his best mate, Rae saw him as a boy that would never -- should never -- grow up.

When the year arrived that Hamish would attend Hogwarts, the poor boy could barely contain his own nerves. Adah and Kara had already graduated, Lee was in year seven, and Noelle was in year five. They were too old to be bothered worrying about their youngest sibling, though there were moments were Hamish wanted nothing more than a good hug from someone who loved him. It surprised no one in the MacFarlan home that Hamish was sorted into Ravenclaw. He was always a bright boy with a knack specifically for memorization. After quickly settling in, Hamish immediately began scouting out the Ravenclaw Quidditch team. First years didn't play on house Quidditch teams, so Hamish was left on the side. In a way, he was glad about that. It gave him an extra year to scout out any competition he may have. They were good, and highly competative. Tryouts were a grueling process, and in his second year Hamish left tryouts battered a bruised -- but with a spot on the team. Unfortunately for him, the spot was on the reserves, cheering on his teammates and listening as the captain addressed the team during practices. In his first year on the team, Hamish didn't see a minute of playing time. He impressed the captain and older students with his speed on a broom, but Hamish was a nervous player, and he was far from aggressive, a skill set that their team was entirely based around. They didn't play dirty, but they did play mean, which was a strategy that was both entirely new and unappreciated by Hamish.

Finding the words to tell his parents that he was a reserve didn't come easy to Hamish. Parchment was discarded, torn, lit on fire and thrown out his dormitory window before he was probably able to write them letter. And so for his second and third years at Hogwarts, well, he may have told them the tiniest, most miniscule white lie that had ever been exchanged between a child and his parents: that Hamish played. He didn't over exaggerate, didn't tell them that he was the superstar of the team, just that he saw a fair amount of time on the pitch. And until his third year at Hogwarts, they bought it. Until then, though, Hamish feared he'd be on the reserve squad for the rest of his time at Hogwarts.

While he improved his game tremendously and was able to contend with his peers during practice, he was still a ball of anxiety, which frightened his captain. And then, on an unlikely day where the sun was hidden behind thick black clouds, one of the three Ravenclaw chasers was struck down with a bludger. His captain, Dai Llewlleyn, a sixth year student with training methods that were unorthodox, to say the least, called him into the air. The game resumed immediately, with the Ravenclaw team choosing to not linger over their fallen member. Hamish impressed everyone, both on the team and in the crowd, with his agility on a broom and perfect memorization of team plays. He scored a couple of times (not nearly as much as he would have liked) but it was more than enough to guarantee him a spot on the starting lineup. And that was when Hamish's life really started.
