As the conflict continues, so too does the job of analyzing it. Starting right here, at Capitalist Paradise (host site to this blog), we have the continuing coverage from Cunctator, who continues to impress me with his piercing straight-to-the-heart-of-the-matter coverage. The latest, as of this writing is his scrutiny of Kofi Annan's latest call for a ceasefire, which he rightly dubs, "hollow nonsense." | QUOTE ('Cunctator') | | By denouncing the actions of both sides, Annan is perpetuating the lie of moral equivalence between the two sides. He acknowledges Hezbollah as the aggressor, but still refuses to accept Israel's right to defend itself. The claim that Israel could do so without targeting Lebanese infrastructure or catching civilians in the cross-fire is a farce, plain and simple. The death of innocents in Lebanon is a crime, but Israel is not the perpetrator. Hezbollah, the aggressor that forced this conflict, is the party with blood on their hands. The moral responsibility is theirs and theirs alone. |
Hold the line, Cunctator!Next up is Gus Van Horn, who shows how Just War Theory is holding us back from victory. In his words, | QUOTE ('Gus Van Horn') | | "Just War Theory has nothing to do with winning wars." |
Check it out. He cites one of my favorite articles in recent memory, The Moral Goodness of the Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima, by John Lewis. Every time I read the following paragraph of it, I can't help but pump my fist and solidly affirm, " Yes!" | QUOTE ('John Lewis') | | The bombings marked America's total victory over a militaristic culture that had murdered millions. To return an entire nation to morality, the Japanese had to be shown the literal meaning of the war they had waged against others. The abstraction "war," the propaganda of their leaders, their twisted samurai "honor," their desire to die for the emperor--all of it had to be given concrete form. This is what firebombing Japanese cities accomplished. It showed the Japanese that "this"--point to burning buildings, screaming children scarred unmercifully, piles of corpses, the promise of starvation--"this is what you have done to others. Now it has come for you. Give it up, or die." This was the only way to show them the true nature of their philosophy, and to beat the truth of the defeat into them. |
Meanwhile, Edward Cline posts up at The Rule of Reason. with some advice drawn from book three of his series, Sparrowhawk. If the quote he employs is any indication, then he's penned some very good books. I, for one, am intrigued. Moving on, Grant Jones over at The Dougout ponders, Who Started the War in Lebanon. I think his answer is clear enough: | QUOTE ('Grant Jones') | | Despite all sniveling to the contrary, if Lebanon is stupid enough to join forces with Hezbollah they will deserve whatever they get. |
Of course, Cox and Forkum are always good for some amusing drawrings. Followed, as ever, with trenchant insights. Like clockwork, the Ayn Rand Institute has several good articles on the topic. Don't wait for me to link them, sign up over there and they will email you their articles the instant they are released. There Is No Need for an Endless Global Conflict, by Debi Ghate Freedom vs. Unlimited Majority Rule By Peter Schwartz The U.S.-Israeli Suicide Pact By Elan Journo Finally, Robert Tracinski weighs in with an article that has, as its title, perhaps my favorite sentence so far regarding this conflict: What Part of 'War' Don't We Understand?Well, there you go. More will surely come as events develop. -Inspector

Last-second addition: Andy over at The Charlotte Capitalist has a roundup of his own, where he has an interesting way of exploring the question: | QUOTE ('The Charlotte Capitalist') | | Eliminating Iran as a threat would be a great step. What are the odds of that happening? |
And the Granddaddy of roundups, Gus Van Horn, has his roundup #78 that has links galore (Including to here. Thanks Gus!), as well as some additional thoughts on "proportional response" (Hint: The words "unmitigated folly" are used). -Inspector
