...I wonder why some people believe that crap. I think it appeals to some because it offers a freedom from being responsible for their own decisions and actions. I think that others can't distinguish between our rational thoughts and our instinctive, automatic responses to certain stimuli.

Of course, it's entirely possible that the people who fall for it are idiots, and I'm just wasting my time trying to make any sense of their decision.

All of the above? wink.gif

Insisting there is no free will is a ban here. Definitely. We discuss things with human beings, not rudderless meat-bags.

Just a shame you had to be reminded of that over at Capmag. cool.gif

The idea is basically intellectualized stupidity, just as Marxism is intellectualized looting.

Oh, man, that was a while ago. I don't even remember the specific instance you refer to.

Reasonator was the troll's name.

It was in 2006, just after the forum was re-started.

I bet that it was after denying free will was a banning offence here.

Oh, that's more recent than I figured. I vaguely recall teasing/berating someone by that name. You've got a memory for the trolls; I'll give you that, Haggis.

I spent three weeks one summer touring the United Kingdom. I recall four things from my time spent in Scotland:

1.) Dragging a stone half the size of my head up the south face of Arthur's Seat

2.) The cafeteria at the University of Edinburgh is a cleverly designed diet program.

3.) I learned what the VAT is

4.) Glasgow was not part of the tour and I got a strange look for asking if it was.

I think we should all learn from the experiences detailed here.

I'm sick and tired of having to refute the same old pish and having other people, who should know better, make the same mistakes over and over again.
