So apparently the 'viros wanted us all to snuff out our lights the other day in a show of support for their fight to wipe out the human race.

I don't remember what I was doing but I can sure as hell tell you what I wasn't doing: giving a damn what a bunch of misanthropic freaks command us to do.

Good commentary on the situation here, here, and here.

And yes, there was a Futurama reference in that bit about fighting to wipe out the human race.

I was one of the people that turned on all lights just to offset their "offset." I wouldn't want all that power the electric company is producing to go to waste, yanno? wink.gif

Participating cities turned off street lights?

Did they realize that they were turning off devices that help to prevent automobile accidents and street crime? My guess is that this type of thinking never entered into their minds, or if it did, they saw this as a bold new population control measure.

*sigh*

At least I didn't contribute to the madness that night. All lights necessary to contribute to the comfort and safety of my family were burning brightly in my house.

I didn't think they meant it that way. If they did... wow.

Stupid thought, wouldn't power companies still be putting out the same amount of power regardless if we were to have turned off the lights? If so, wouldn't turning off the lights be pointless? huh.gif

Sort of. It depends on whether the power companies anticipated correctly the lower amount of power. Basically, though, during the late night there isn't a lot of power demanded versus other times, so it is a time where it is quite easy to keep up with demand. Usually electricity is discounted during those hours.

But yes, basically the whole thing is a symbolic gesture. Of course, what it symbolizes isn't what many people think.
