There is much news on the topic of environmentalism this week, so once again it is round up time… First, Gus Van Horn ( Mr. Round up) reports on a new and relieving trend: scientists are beginning to distance themselves from the ludicrous hoax that is Global Warming: | QUOTE (’Gus Van Horn’) | | According to the web site of the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, a fair number of scientists who had once accepted the idea that global warming was occurring due to human activity have changed their minds after a deeper consideration of the evidence or after new research came to light. |
He goes on with a sobering point, however:
| QUOTE (’Gus Van Horn’) | This is good news, but it would be better news if we had a similar parade of politicians changing their minds about the proper purpose of government -- like Boris Yeltsin once did -- and taking firm public stands against the continued existence of the welfare state.
It is the notion that the government should be doing anything besides protecting individual rights that makes it even possible for the mess that is global warming hysteria to exist. Had the general public the degree of suspicion of intrusive government that it ought to have, Al Gore would have been laughed back into obscurity the moment he ran to Washington. Indeed, even if the scenarios portrayed in An Inconvenient Truth were completely correct, it would be improper for the government to dictate solutions for any of them. |
Ah, but he’s not done yet. In his following roundup, he has more: | QUOTE (’Gus Van Horn’) | Last night, I blogged about a parade of scientists coming out against global warming hysteria. If you'd like to read about a politician and a major publication doing the same, follow the links. I only wish the latter two were American!
That last link, which I learned about through the Harry Binswanger List, discusses an article in Der Spiegel which includes a balanced discussion of the pros and cons of changing global temperatures, even going so far as to discuss the possible advantages of warming (and pitfalls of cooling) and to mention that our climate fluctuates (gasp!) naturally. |
Michael Caution, over at Abandon Caution (HT: Gus) reports on that same article, picking out some juicy tidbits: | QUOTE (’Abandon Caution’) | Listed are thirteen scientists in varying fields which discuss their experience with the "accuracy" of climate science. I recommend you read all their respective backgrounds as they present the information that the media ignore, mainly because it's not sensationalist and can't be covered in a sound bite. To give you a sample:
| QUOTE (’Senate Report’) | | Environmental geochemist Dr. Jan Veizer, professor emeritus of University of Ottawa, converted from believer to skeptic after conducting scientific studies of climate history. “I simply accepted the (global warming) theory as given,” Veizer wrote on April 30, 2007 about predictions that increasing C02 in the atmosphere was leading to a climate catastrophe. “The final conversion came when I realized that the solar/cosmic ray connection gave far more consistent picture with climate, over many time scales, than did the CO2 scenario,” Veizer wrote. “It was the results of my work on past records, on geological time scales, that led me to realize the discrepancies with empirical observations. Trying to understand the background issues of modeling led to realization of the assumptions and uncertainties involved,” Veizer explained. “The past record strongly favors the solar/cosmic alternative as the principal climate driver,” he added. Veizer acknowledges the Earth has been warming and he believes in the scientific value of climate modeling. “The major point where I diverge from the IPCC scenario is my belief that it underestimates the role of natural variability by proclaiming CO2 to be the only reasonable source of additional energy in the planetary balance. Such additional energy is needed to drive the climate. The point is that most of the temperature, in both nature and models, arises from the greenhouse of water vapor (model language ‘positive water vapor feedback’,) Veizer wrote. “Thus to get more temperature, more water vapor is needed. This is achieved by speeding up the water cycle by inputting more energy into the system,” he continued. “Note that it is not CO2 that is in the models but its presumed energy equivalent (model language ‘prescribed CO2’). Yet, the models (and climate) would generate a more or less similar outcome regardless where this additional energy is coming from. This is why the solar/cosmic connection is so strongly opposed, because it can influence the global energy budget which, in turn, diminishes the need for an energy input from the CO2 greenhouse,” he wrote. |
[bold added] |
Also, Michael shows a video which exposes Al Gore for the liar he is: | QUOTE (’Abandon Caution’) | | On May 2nd, Glenn Beck did an exposé aptly entitled, Exposed: The Climate of Fear. It makes many good points on several issues, like how climate scientists are being kept silent for fear of losing their jobs. The main portion of the exposé goes about illustrating why Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth is deliberately misleading in its predictions on global warming effects and how it distorts current science to fit Gore's preconceived solution of government power grabs. Truly, Gore's film is a work of propaganda. |
Click through to watch the video. It must be movie week, because he’s got more: | QUOTE (’Abandon Caution’) | | Aired in November 2005, this documentary by the CBC entitled, Doomsday Called Off, shows scientists from around the world sharing real data and statistics refuting claims by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change concerning man’s role in warming the planet. |
Again, click through to see the video. Moving along, as there is plenty more to see, turn your eyes to Mike’s Eyes, where he reports on some very telling events. | QUOTE (’Paul at Real Truth About Global Warming’) | Recently, another incident of man-made global warming ideologues suppressing the scientific facts about global warming occurred in Washington State. Associate State Climatologist and climate scientist Mark Albright was fired because he sent e-mails to other scientists containing the true scientific facts about the Cascade Mountain snow pack. These facts refuted the publications of his boss, State Climatologist Philip Mote and the speeches of Seattle’s Democrat Mayor Greg Nickels who claimed the Cascade Mountain snow pack declined 50% from 1950 to 2000 due to man-made global warming.
Before the firing, University of Washington atmospheric scientist Dennis Hartmann tried to referee and resolve the dispute between Albright and Mote by doing an objective analysis of the data, but this failed when Hartmann found that Albright was right and Mote was wrong. This led to Mote trying to censor Albright’s e-mails. When Albright refused to allow this censorship, he was fired. |
| QUOTE (’Mike’) | …This event illustrates on a mini scale what is happening nation wide and even globally regarding the relationship between Attila and the Witch Doctor so eloquently identified by Ayn Rand in the title essay of her book "For The New Intellectual." In this case, it is a politician wielding political force, a mini-Attila, who needs the State Climatologist, a mini-Witch Doctor, to provide him (the politician) with the justification for the continued looting of the people of Seattle…
To ignore the facts of reality that are contrary to one's own scientific findings is dishonest and I see a lot of it on the pro-global warming side of this controversy, a lot more of it than I see on the critic side… to ignore evidence as if it doesn't exist, or in this case to refuse to disclose to the public why 1950 was chosen as a baseline, to be indifferent to the truth, is wrong. That is why putting an end to government encouragement of science is so urgent. |
[bold mine] For the unabridged version, hop on over there. When you’re done, check out the news from The Primacy of Awesome, here, an article about a New Zealand scientist with the courage to challenge the Global Warming behemoth: | QUOTE (’Stuff.co.nz’) | Climate change will be considered a joke in five years time, meteorologist Augie Auer told the annual meeting of Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers in Ashburton this week.
Man's contribution to the greenhouse gases was so small we couldn't change the climate if we tried, he maintained.
"We're all going to survive this. It's all going to be a joke in five years," he said.
A combination of misinterpreted and misguided science, media hype, and political spin had created the current hysteria and it was time to put a stop to it. "It is time to attack the myth of global warming," he said. |
[emphasis mine] Five years? We can only hope. Knowing politics and, more importantly, philosophy, this issue will continue to plague us long after the scientific “consensus” shifts against it. Science didn’t stop these religious fundamentalists, so it won’t stop these. But, anyway, we can hope at least they won’t be able to dishonestly claim the mantle of science anymore (in the way that Marx did and still does, to the naïve). On that topic, George Reisman has a few words: | QUOTE (’George Reisman’) | For years, the environmentalists have been trying to have it both ways, claiming that in the midst of the global warming that they allege, Europe might suffer an ice age. According to this scenario, ships would sail through an ice-free Arctic Ocean but be unable to unload their cargos in the ice-bound ports of Northern Europe…
Warmth from the Gulf Stream is necessary to keep Europe temperate in the face of cold from the Arctic. It is not necessary when the frigidity of the Arctic disappears. The environmentalists chose not to recognize the distinction. They took a position equivalent to that of a deranged person, who possibly might confuse the consequences of his not wearing his overcoat in July with the consequences of his not wearing it in February. It is one thing if the Gulf Stream were to disappear in the climate conditions the world has become accustomed to. It is something very different if it were to disappear in the conditions of an Arctic so warm that most of its ice melted. |
[bold mine]
Does that surprise any of my readers anymore? It shouldn’t. Ducks do tend to quack, after all.
Continuing…
| QUOTE | Well, this particular bugaboo may no longer serve. A story in The New York Times of May 15, 2007, titled “Scientists Back Off Theory of a Colder Europe in a Warming World” explains why. (The story appears on p. F3 of The Times’ Metropolitan Edition of the same date.)
The “backing off” is not based on any recognition of the inherent contradictions in the argument, but on evidence that the Gulf Stream is not easily destroyed and also is not the only source of warming for Europe; prevailing winds and other factors are now recognized as being more important than the Gulf Stream.
Don’t expect this “backing off” to mean an actual abandonment of claims of a European ice age. So long as the world is full of people credulous enough to be frightened by this story, environmentalists will continue telling it. |
Notice we very much have a common theme here: the good news is that environmentalists are losing scientific ground; the bad news is that they won’t care in the least because they are utterly unconcerned with the truth and the media will eagerly swallow pseudo-scientific lies, if they call for the destruction of capitalism. Now, finally, on the topic of environmentalist mush-brained emotionalist anti-capitalist altruist idiocy, there are Vegans. Myrhaf found a few articles on the latest round of their nonsense. | QUOTE (’Instapundit’) | The Vegans are on the attack... Planck just wrote an op-ed piece in the NY Times today (May 21) discussing the lethality of unsupplemented Vegan diets (after yet another couple was convicted of murder for starving their infant by withholding animal protein.) But now it's payback time, so the Vegans have come to try to destroy Planck for bringing science, not sentiment, to the subject of nutrition. Politics and PETA won't keep a baby alive when it's deprived of the essential amino acids that can only be found in animal protein. And none of these Vegans have read Planck's book...I have, and it's good. |
( source) He has a quick and completely accurate analysis: | QUOTE (’Myrhaf’) | | Veganism, animal rights and environmentalism are movements that result from the decline of reason in our culture meeting the moral imperatives of altruism. New Age types think in unfocused emotions, not logic. They see humans eating animals, a practice that is without question selfish, and in their inability to distinguish between rational and non-rational animals, conclude it is immoral. Or perhaps they don’t think rigorously enough to denounce it as immoral, they just get a vague emotional reaction that meat eating is wrong. Vegans, like environmentalists, are not driven primarily by any practical purpose, but by the moral purpose of sacrifice... |
Ah, Vegans. The moronitude is too thick on that one for me to tackle quickly, so for now I will just laugh at them. Yes, that’s right: keep starving yourselves, you green wackos. In fact, you should stop eating altogether - after all, eating is murder!* -Inspector *scroll down to “Seen Around the Future,” you smelly hippie

Good to see some common sense about the lie of the century-as it is-coming from my nation. And I thought NZers lost all sense of reason.
Overall, it's good to see the tide finally shifting against the global warming hype.

I figured you might appreciate that. It's good to know not all your neighbors are nuts.
If media and public opinion shifts on this, it would take a lot of the sting out of voting Democrat when it will probably come to that.

Farmers here in NZ are some of the biggest supporters of property rights, and considering the crap they've been getting over the global warming lie, it's good to see them standing up for the truth.
