Hi everyone!

I came across this at Objectivism Online and thought I'd check things out. I'm 21 and in Canada, hoping to become a history teacher. Politically I'm somewhere between non-orthodox Marxism and toned down Objectivism, yes that is possible.

Anyway, looking forward to hanging around.

There is no such thing as "toned down" Objectivism.

Non-orthodox marxism? Oh joy....

Welcome anyway though <_<

OK, you got my curiosity up. What exactly is "toned down Objectivism"

And how, is it compatible with any strain of Marxism?

Greetings, I am also in Canada.

Before I answer, I'm going to say flat out I do not take kindly to personal insult. So before you think of going down to that level, know that I will not respond to your future posts.

1. My Objectivist tendencies are toned down because of Ayn Rand's portrayel of many things. "The Virtue of Selfishness" opens with a series of anti-altruist straw men, in PWNI she even dedicates an article, "Philosophical Detection" to explaining how to build a staw man.

She also has a tendency to throw insult at others which I disagree with.

2. Objectivism has similarities with Marxism here are some I've noted -

A - Both Marx and Rand state that self image is defined largely by economic activity. Rand says many times that it is through productive acts that man is truly man and is worthy of pride, this is exactly what Marx advised.

B - Both categorically reject a deity in favour of materialism. Remember the seen in Atlas Shrugged where Dagny is on the John Galt line expressing her beleif that happiness comes from material? That kind of "We are material beings and proud of it" mentality is similar to Marx aswell.

Now, obviously there are many signifigant differences, but the similarities are there.

I have read VOS several times and its arguments are all valid. Could you be more specific? I could clear up your confusion...

I'm a patriotic American that supports Capitalism and has blue eyes. Many nazis had blue eyes. Does this mean it is legitiment to compare me with a nazi?

No it doesn't. You are comparing inessentials.

Answer these questions: What is it that makes Objectivism, Objectivism and what is it that makes Marxism, Marxism. Anything else is non-essential in a comparison.

It's only illegitiment if you are using it in place of a legitiment argument. If we utterly demolish your arguments, then we could correctly identify you as a certain thing (like an ignoramous).
