LATVERIA For many years Latveria has been ruled by Doctor Doom with an iron fist. However, previous rulers before him have included the Haasen bloodline, which have ruled Latveria for almost six centuries before Doom’s takeover. In 1940, Vladimir Vassily Gonereo Tristian Mangegi Fortunov, Baron of Sabbat, Baron of Haasen, Baron of Krozi assumed the throne. Vladimir ruled for decades before making a fatal error in ordering the death of Werner von Doom. Werner’s son would soon become Doctor Doom. Doom murdered Vladimir and imprisoned his son, Rudolfo. He then had a robot duplicate of Rodolfo surrender the Latverian crown to him. Under Doom’s leadership, Latveria was quickly established as one of the world’s leaders in technology. When Doctor Doom had to leave his country for political or personal reasons, he would use a Doombot to rule in his absence.

Traditionally, the Fortress of Solitude is located in the Arctic and the general public in Superman's world is at best only vaguely aware of the existence of the Fortress, with its location kept secret from all but Superman's closest friends and allies. A trademark of the Fortress is that it contains a memorial statue of Jor-El and Lara, Superman's Kryptonian parents, holding a large globe of Krypton. However, although Superman has living quarters at the Fortress, his main residence is still in Metropolis.
