Americans Playing Brits

There are sadly very few Americans out there who can do a good British accent.

Renee Zellweger does a pretty good British accent.

Most Americans who do British accents are either too generic or too cockney. There's actually a lot of British accents just like there are a lot of American accents.

Terry Gilliam is American and he does an excellent British accent.

I read somewhere that Americans can't tell the difference between a British accent and an Australian accent. As an American who can tell the difference, that statement pissed me off.

Thats a bit harsh aint it. That would be like saying us British cant tell the difference between American and Australian, its the same difference as the language is essentially the same but each country has their own twist if you like. Like you said, there are many different British accents, just as there are different Austrailian accents and American accents. You seem to get the old North - South divide in most countries.

Keanu Reeves' British accent (if you can call it that) in the 1992 Dracula movie was awful.

Christian Bale and Alfred Molina are two British actors that do great American accents, I didn't even realize they were British at first!
