The shrimptail-pack grunts, featured only in Halo 1... what are they? Old Grunt armor being phased out? A sexual designation?

Did the normal erect methane tank crumple from being half used up? But then how do you explain the different mask?

...let the discussing... COMMENCE.

My guess is that the prophets passed a new law which ment that elites could no longer sneak up behind grunts and slap them across the head.

It's probably just different armour types just like some of the elites have differently shaped armour as well.

It was probably never considered in development for Halo 2 and 3, so they just disappeared.

Well that sucks... why would Bungie forsake the poor little shrimpy-tailed Grunts? Oh, fooie. Now every time you play Halo 1, the shrimptail Grunts will just sit and cry. Even on Legendary mode.

They sit and cry in the other games anyway though... unless you have Tough Luck activated :D (I think that's the skull)

Does H3 have an analogue of the H2 IWHBYD skull?
