Woodland
Balmoral Castle has a very large forest to the south of the building, filled with many kinds of trees that cast a nice shadow during the hottest hours of the day. Just be careful not to venture too far after dark, for plenty of animals have a residence here.

River Dee
"It has been called the 'Silver Dee', and it fully deserves that title. Many would say that it is the most attractive of all the larger Scottish salmon rivers, as well as one of the most prolific in fish. It is a lovely, tumbling, fast-flowing river of crystal clear water, so clear that it is often hard to estimate its depth. It runs across one side of the Belmoral property, and then across Crathie Village some eight miles from the castle.

Craigendarroch Hill
Craigendarroch is a remnant of the ancient plateau surface which was deeply dissected by the glaciers of the last ice age. The name is derived from two Gaelic words - "Craig" for crag or hill and "darroch" meaning oak. The name is entirely appropriate for the hill is a time capsule harbouring one of the last stands of oak on Deeside. Before the influence of man and his need for agriculture, the oak was the dominant climax vegetation in this part of Deeside. Now only a few stands remain and Craigendarroch is one the finest examples. However, it is thought even these oaks were planted by man although, of course, the hill must at one time have supported a natural oak wood. The first recorded use of the name "Hill of the Oaks" was in the early 18th century, but oak trees are known to have been present on Craigendarroch for well over three hundred years.

Ballater Town
Ballater is a delightful 'Victorian' town in the centre of Royal Deeside the eastern Cairngorms National Park. Originally founded at the start of the 19th century to accommodate visitors to the nearby Pannanich Wells spa, it subsequently became the site for the railway station that serviced nearby Balmoral Castle and Upper Deeside. For about 100 years this station was used by the Royal Family and their guests and by thousands of holiday makers from Aberdeen and elsewhere coming to enjoy the delightful surroundings.

Crathie Village
The small village of Crathie sits on the edge of the Balmoral estate. It is famous because, when in residence, the Royal Family regularly attend the charming village Church of Scotland kirk. but the village has a long history, dating back at least to the early Christian saints. The village lies either side of the River Dee about midway between Ballater and Braemar and approximately 50 miles west of Aberdeen. The surrounding countryside is typical of the beautiful scenery of the Eastern Cairngorms National Park with the River Dee sparkling in the fore-ground and Lochnagar majestic in the background.

Crathie Parish Church
Like many parishes in upper Strathdee the first beginnings of the Christian faith are to be found in the work of missionaries in the early Celtic Church. The thirteenth century Church, the ruins of which are to be found in the old graveyard, was dedicated to St. Monire, a follower of St. Columba. What is interesting is that the site of this Church is just a few hundred yards away from "Polmanire" a favourite fishing pool on the Dee. Tradition has it that St. Monire baptised the first Christians in Crathie in that pool of the river. We cannot tell but the story is not improbable and the survival of the name "Polmanire" is significant. Here the Royal family attend Sunday Service when in residence at Balmoral.
