Jewels. There was something about the beautiful, stunning weight of jewels in her satchel that exhilarated her. Made her feel more alive than she'd felt all her life. Guess it wasn't the most noble way to get her kicks, but in Gotham it hardly mattered. The city didn't judge. The moon only looked down on her with admiration. It basked her leather clad body in silver light and reflected in her goggles like the sparkle in someone's eye. Gotham was not a city that encouraged its inhabitants to play it safe, play it good. It tended to bring the worst out of people and encourage it. Made everyone crave what they couldn't have and showed them the dirty, underground paths to get to their desired fantasies.
Selina sat on the outcrop of a particular prestigious building Whitewood Jewelry. A plaza she frequented on her midnight escapades. You think they would have learned by now, but there she was, sitting like a proud cat with a dark satchel busting with trinkets by her side. The stealthy feline hadn't even tripped the shops alarm and therefore decided to sit atop it and enjoy the moonlight, arrogant and proud just as her animal counterpart. If she'd had a tail it might have flickered devilishly behind her as she hummed something of a purr and gazed at Gotham's skyline.
The city really was pretty when one looked in the right places, at the right time. The moonlight was soft on the glass windows of the skyscrapers and swanky hotels. Expensive parties still lit up the streets even at the early hours of the morning. Cars rolled down the streets below in sleek, colorful lines and lights. Gotham breathed and thrived. The gossamer mask of beauty was thrown over the filth. For a moment it almost looked as if nothing could ever go wrong. Although, it certainly helped when wealth lay under her fingertips. Gotham sure looked a hell of a lot nicer from up here on the roof of a jewelry store than underground or in the streets looking for her next meal. But that was a life long left behind her. Things were different now. Things had changed. She had changed.
She'd come so far since her first days of donning the cat suit. She'd been stealing since she was a kid but with experience her craft became more and more advanced. The heists got bigger and better, and easier. Though she wouldn't admit it to herself, she'd grown a little overconfident in the last few months. She'd been under the radar for so long she felt no one could touch her. Her opportunistic pilfering even went out of Gotham's city lines. She was insatiable and sometimes felt as though she were just stealing for the thrill. When did she become an adrenaline junkie? That wasn't usually like her. Though there was no denying the fact that she stole for the shine and sparkle of trinkets more than anything.
It was a life she'd never known. One of wealth and glimmer and expensive things and an upscale apartment. Her whole life before this was the exact opposite. Perhaps that was also why she was unable to cap her desire to steal and lie and cheat lately -she was obsessed with keeping her standing. Her pretty things. Her new life. To go back to her past would probably kill her. Besides, this was too wonderful. How could she not sit atop a rooftop and lounge in Gotham's lovely, bitter moonlight? This was the life. This was her life now. And no one would take it away from her if she could help it.

Unlike Selina, Babs had not been stealing since she was little-- okay, in her case, fighting crime. It was a relatively newer hobby of hers, as she'd only dawned her cowl two years ago after the Joker's reign of terror over Gotham. But she'd risen through the ranks as quickly as could be. She went from a punning wannabe Bat who had been told repeatedly by Batman himself to go home to a trusted ally to a fully-recognized partner of Batman himself. Unfortunately, the criminal underworld of Gotham didn't really see her on the same level as Batman. Maybe it was because she was short (5' 5'' without heels on) and small (a mighty 115 pounds). Or maybe it was because she was a girl. Or, it even could have been because some habits would just never die, and Batgirl would forever be a huge fan of punning while fighting crime.
People didn't really understand it. She wasn't that great at hit, sure, but there was something about fighting crime that just begged to have bad puns thrown about. Of course, half of her inspiration for doing this were the likes of Buffy and Veronica Mars, and you'd be hard pressed to see either of them doing what they did best without making a pun or twelve. And her puns were significantly better than they used to be.
The point was, Batgirl was not a name that was exactly synonymous with fear. Yet. And to be honest, part of her liked people underestimating her. It made it so much more satisfying when she kicked their ass and handed them over to the people of GCPD, or the good people of the Militia. At least the Militia recognized what she could do.
And that had nothing to do with the fact that her father was running it, either. Which she was quite proud of.
Tonight, however, had been relatively free of ass-kicking. Batgirl had been making her usual rounds, and if there was anything to do in her neck of the woods, it was over by the time she got there, or Batman or Robin or one of the less-awesome vigilantes had taken care of it first. Not that they were supposed to break from their patrol routes or anything. Sigh.
As luck would have it, that was about to change, however. As Batgirl swung over towards Uptown and the Diamond District, she made out a small figure atop one of the buildings. Adjusting her course slightly, she made her way to the building behind the figure, hoping to get a better look.
And once she did, she was not disappointed. Catwoman. She knew the name, but she'd never come face to face with the jewel thief before. But from what she'd been briefed on, the woman was a pain in Batman's side. And, you know, the economy. Well, this was going to be fun. And she knew just what to do.
She landed quietly on the roof behind Catwoman and crouched right beside her in a pose similar to the feline fatal, though she remained ready for an attack at any moment. "Anything catch your eye?" Not her best work. But it was a lot better than the ever-cliched cat got your tongue line, so she was gonna go with it.

She probably should have expected someone to find her. With every new criminal that popped up in Gotham, another vigilante appeared out of thin air to match. Selina could barely keep track these days. And it wasn't that she necessarily minded. The city needed a few more hitters on the good guys side, no one would argue that. And they could duke it out with the top bosses of the city all they damn pleased, it was no concern to her. It only proved an obstacle and a nuisance when the vigilantes decided she was enough of a threat to their precious idealistic hope for the city and went toe to toe with her.
Personally, she thought they should have better things to do than mess around with an opportunistic jewel thief. If they really wanted to do something for the city they should have been out hunting the Joker down or rooting out all the crooked cops in the GCPD. But it really wasn't her call, was it? Selina stiffened when she heard feet touch down behind her. It could have been anyone, really. She half expected the elevator boy at her apartment to come swinging down with a mask at this point. Regardless, she thought it best to be on guard. She moved her satchel into her lap and in the shadow her muscled figure made she wrapped a hand around her whip. Half of her hoped it was the infamous Batman himself. Maybe more than half of her. But the hope was in vain anyway. For the figure that appeared beside her was much slighter than the Dark Knight. And the voice that fluttered over her shoulders was distinctly female. And young.
Selina turned her face over at the young woman crouched next to her. Her eyes flashed inside her goggles but she made no move to get away. She was disappointed, mostly. The big Bat wasn't here to play around with her like she'd hoped, instead his goofy little sidekick sat at her side with an attitude Selina couldn't quite put her finger on and couldn't scrape off. Her red lips pressed together in nothing short of annoyance and she looked back over the skyline. If had been anyone else, she would have been more on guard. She might have made a run for it or planned to fight if she thought she stood a chance. But this thing? The girl was all of five feet and the width of her finger. It was a wonder Batman even let her wear the emblem on her chest -if he gave permission at all. What could she do? Selina had a hard time picturing her going up against the six foot three thugs of Gotham's underbelly.
"Something always catches my eye," she hummed. Her voice was a deep, feminine note that flexed in her chest. She didn't look at her opponent as she spoke. Barely gave her the time of day. After a moment though, she turned and gazed at the face next to her. The eyes behind the cowl were youthful and bright. Some part of her pained for the young woman and what Gotham had turned her into. She should probably be going to college or something and instead she was sitting up here on a roof with a feared symbol displayed across her chest. Then again, Selina remembered what the city had done to her at that age. She was sleeping with strange men and begging for money because the city ate her alive. At least this girl was on the right side of the equation.
Selina stood. She made sure her motions were soft, so as not to make Batgirl think she was rearing up for an attack. She slung her satchel over her shoulder and saluted the other woman with two fingers. "Sorry to cut our visit short, darling," she said, back tracking a few steps with acrobatic ease, "Perhaps some other time." If Batgirl wanted to try and fight her, by all means.
