During Canada's annual seal hunt, if it is anything like last year's, over 300, 000 harp seals will be clubbed to death. A shocking 98.5% of these seals will be under two months old. Hunters use clubs to break the skulls of these seals, most often requiring more than one hit to do so, therefore the seal suffers before death. Many of the seals end up choking on their own blood for up to 90 minutes while they lay on the ice floes, slowly bleeding to death. An estimated 42% of these baby seals will be skinned alive.

What you may have heard about the seal hunt being to control the harp seal population is false. The reality is that these seals are being hunted solely for their furs, and scientists have actually concluded that the annual seal hunt is a danger to the seal population. The fact is that sealing is a very small enterprise, bringing in less than 1% of Newfoundland's GDP, so it is not like the economy will go down the drain without it.
