After the end of the Thread, dragonriders were supposed to watch the skies. For four hundred Turns, they did just that. What happens when they fail? A terrible mistake leads to the destruction of technology that Pern has come to depend on, and the dragonriders become a target. Drastic measures are taken to ensure the survival of the dragons of Pern.

Now, 1000 Turns after AIVAS shut off permanently, Pern is unrecognizable. A secretive organization known as the Skylords has taken control of Pernese society, setting the destiny of each child at the moment of birth by the use of their Sign. The Nighthall sends their Spies and Assassains out to do the bidding of their wealthy clients. Dragons have faded into legend and are assumed extinct. Not one has been seen for over 500 Turns.

But, hidden in the Starholds, dragons do live. And as the Red star begins to pulse on the horizon for the first time in 1000 Turns, it may be that they are needed once again. When a young runaway discovers a strange copper Egg in a long-abandoned Weyr, the fate of Pern is forever altered.
