Established:                                     August 14th, 1980
Location:                                     London, England, St. John's, Canada, Maitland, Australia.

Jurisdiction:   Worldwide

Years Active:   1980 to present
Veritas Institute

The Veritas Institute (established formally in 1980 at a locked summit in Thames House) is an organization spanning the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia with the objective to deepen their understanding of the paranormal world. Their modus operendi varies from this to safeguarding both sides from one another as well as, on occasion, operating as a military force if necessary. Their main objective is that of research, however, to establish what, exactly, is out there.

Early Life

Early Life was discovered to be not quite that as the London office was given what, apparently, a great long time ago, was the location of what would be a mother organization of the same name that had fallen into mind as the things of myth. This has proven to be an invaluable resource as the information stored in the archives under Christ Church Greyfriars.

Veritas Institute, Canada was actually approached by the Fae when they realized they were again being studied in earnest by humans again. It was a wary relationship, filled with questioned motives and distrust but also was successful in exchanging information on one another and forging a more relaxed connection, fledgling but there nevertheless.

As for Australia's Institute employees, they found themselves almost at once pushed into the turmoil of dealing with what they now knew from records in London as being werewolf attacks. Despite the ferocity of some of the altercations Australia had to put up with in their early days they remain possibly the strongest in advocating as non-violent of an approach as possible among the Institute.

Present Day

Currently the Institute is thriving. The information that they have compiled is both impressive and informative and they have expanded their understanding of what the world is. They have also discovered that there are more sinister powers at play and that they might pose a threat to their own well being and that of humanity's way of life. More and more discoveries of Dark Magic users have surfaced and, more troubling, the discoveries are of recent events.

Due to these discoveries, the Institute has had a shift in focus, preparing for what might be a threat they do not know the scale of and knowing that it might not be resolved peacefully.

The Monks of Medmenham

Monks Insigna

Established:
                       Disputed
                       Location:
                       Worldwide

Known:   Rumours in the magic communities, not quite secret
Monks of Medmenham

The Monks of Medmenham is a society of magic users with a presence worldwide. Their mission isn't always adhered to by all the clubs. Most are social affairs for magic users who happen to also be high society to flit about and be self important. There are others, however, that adhere to the bylaws of what they were created for, dominance. A few clubs have pulled themlselves ahead of the others and their main goals are for the outside world not to notice this and to also gain power, putting themselves in position for their new world order.

Those who have taken the mission up have drifted to certain places in order to better watch the Veritas Institute, not approving of a new version of a problem it had declared dead. Following this keep your enemies closer idea, the Monks do their best to stay secret as they keep tabs on just what the Institute know.

Early Life

As stated above, it is under dispute exactly when the Monks formed. There have always been people in the magical community who could be described as monks but the name did not come into being until the 1700s but the organization definitely existed before then. This stage of the Monks existence can be described fairly succenctly as a social club. As more and more groups sprang up, however, they realized exactly how much power and sway they all ready had, craving more. They also discovered the wide variety of knowledge they all possessed and began delving into magics not commonly studied including darker magic, long thought to be dangerous or hard to control. It was a badge of honor to be able to say that you were a practitioner and the Monks were definitely interested, showing that they were the best of their order.

Monks Today

Today, the order is of two minds. The majority of old money members are not nearly as proactive as they could be, merely choosing to belong for status and the glimpse of knowledge the club contains. The rest of the organization, however, is quite political, both in human affairs and non-human affairs alike, something the old money members aren't entirely fond of. The fact that there is an order headed by a vampire is definitely something they do not appreciate. There is definitely a schism in the Monks with the old money being brushed aside as this is seen as a time for action among the more involved.

The fact that the Institute is there and interfering with their interests has not gone without notice. It was most unappreciated when another human influence was involved in Fae politics or were found investigating their own scenes of magic. The Monks are watching closely, ready to send out a serious warning for those on their territory.

Werewolves

From the London Veritas office

Established:
                       unknown
                       Location:
                       Worldwide

Jurisdiction:   Commonly in rural areas, away from cities.

Years Active:   Always
Werewolves

Werewolves can easily be divided into basically three types; packs attempting to live mostly human lives, striving to ignore their more animalistic tendencies, packs living a nomadic lifestyle away from people an sustaining themselves in the wild, and packs also living a nomadic lifestyle but not exactly sticking to the odd game animal for dinner.

Werewolf Lifestyles

The first, commonly called 'fuzzies' in the Project's files and other packs as a derogotory term, are the least common as the living is quite difficult. The second are actually the most populous but are rarely seen as they make a very conscious effort to stay away from humans and other such creatures. As for the third, generally refered to as 'roving humanitarians' in the files, bide their time, seeking out the stray victim here and there when they sense weakness. When their numbers start to dwindle though, their attacks become more frequent as it isn't simply tonight's meat at stake.

Transformations are done both by will and by any degree of transformation when the moon is not full and involuntarily during the full moon, the latter being a complete transformation and known to be more than a little bit painful. During complete transformations the werewolf maintains little or no human thought and will most likely only recognize fellow packmates.

Human/Werewolf Affairs

The peace that exists is a thin one with incidents on both sides causing friction and distrust. With this in mind it might be a good thing to go through defense against a werewolf. The most common defense against a werewolf is silver. They can be injured other ways but heal at a more rapid pace than humans but are very rarely killed by any other means other than those that would leave the body utterly destroyed while they are in there wolf form. As humans they are just that, human.

Vampires

Established:

                       Location:
                       Worldwide

Vampires

Vampires have proven to be a difficult study for the Institute. It is not known how this derivative of humanity came into existence or even if vampirism ever didn't exist. It is also appearing that there are really very few linking behaviors to the vampire, leading some to assume vampirism is still not that far removed from humanity. Aging has been stopped by death but they are not immortal though considerably long-lived and will not die of natural means.

Vampire Characteristics

Vampires are territorial by nature as this stems from instinctual protection of hunting grounds and the added safety of being harder to discover on their own. Still though, there are vampires who bind together. This is especially common in warzones during times of heavy fighting, making it easier for them to hunt their prey without raising suspicions.

The basic mechanics are the same thorughtout; tends to stalk through the night and has a taste for blood but there are a few more details that should be expounded on. The presence of vampires has a sort of hypnotic effect on other creatures, possible prey especially, and usually the older the vampire, the stronger the effect. The sun only has 'dusting' effects on vampires already weak though healthy strong vampires still do feel an effect so daylight is generally avoided. The effects of garlic do not seem to be true but there are reports that the obsessive compulsive issues do turn up regularly so if you need to escape a vampire without killing him or her a good idea might be making a mess. The eturn to the grave is more of a personal choice than a compulsion though many do keep vials of dirt from their gravesite or, if not in possession of one, from the site of their death.

There are a considerable minority of vampires who do attempt to resist their bloodlust and have a degree of success, at least in attaining blood without using lethal methods. Blood banks are turned over with more regularity than one would suspect. The majoity, however, do not make such an effort, deeming it unnatural.

In death

As stated previously, vampires do not die of naturally occuring causes, living to be any age. Killing a vampire is fairly straight forward. The classic stake through the heart is the prefered method as, during a fight, it is unlikely one would have the chance to give one's opponent a clean beheading. The trick to keeping a vampire dead, however, is all in the burying.

The Fae

Fae photograph courtesy of V.I. Canada.

Creature                                     Location:
                       Worldwide

Found in:   Green areas, isolated areas.
The Fae

Fairy is a common name describing a race of ancient people taken from the name also given to their realms. They are also commonly referred to as Fae, Fay, The Wee Folk, The Fair Folk, and a myriad of other names on top of that. They had existed in the minds of the world as a far-spread mythological creature and, in truth, they do reach practically everywhere in the world though tending to be in and around more green areas of the world as well as secluded from humanity.

Appearance

Fairy's variations in appearance is considerably wide. Wide enough, in fact, to be broken down into just as many different races of fairy but have been proven to be all interlinked through physicality and magic. They range from human to even plant-like in appearance, can be up to seven feet and as short as seven inches all depending on the tribe they originate from. Fairy magics have a great deal of glamour-based spells as well, allowing them to appear as animals, light, anything they would wish to be (examples, selkies, will-o-the-whisps) or completely invisible as is believed to be quiet common when first encountering people.

Fae, when encountering humans willingly, have a tendency to attempt to blend in, adopting clothing that they believe to be current human clothing. This is oftentimes not the case

Fairy and Human Relations

In decay for millennia , public relations with the Fairy realms and Man have not only actually existed again but have actually been doing quite well considering the vastness of the differences that have to be surmounted for one to understand the other. Despite the appearances they put on, the Fairy are very distant from humans in mind. They have no concept of linear time, seeing far into the past and the future just as plainly as the present. Oftentimes children of mixed races are blessed with psychometry or clairvoyancy but fall considerably short of what a full-blooded Fairy is capable of. Commonly accepted morals of mankind can seem foreign to the Fairy and likewise in reverse.

Fairies are prone to a curious nature and, oftentimes, love to study what they find to be new. From this trait we get the changeling phenomena. For the fae, there is no better way to experience an existence they do not know of than by sending one of their own out to live it, bringing the baby back into the fold after it compiles a lifetime's of knowledge.

Living all of their existence in nature, Fairies become quite attached to this surrounding though are still quite fascinated by the city. Often if their home suffers they too suffer in health and, if their surroundings die, they do as well. They have a different view on death from mankind as they see time differently as well. There isn't necessarily an end but different paths and a death is simply leading on to the next generation. This is such a strong view that Fairy often consider the next birth in a family to be the returning of the most recently deceased member of that family and will be named accordingly.

Spirits

Existence:                                     Throughout time
Location:                                     Worldwide
Spirits

Spirits (Or any other moniker reserved to represent the dead appearing beyond the grave) is a very confusing state and topic to discuss as there seems to be a variety of possible ways to appear from the spirit realm that is believed to co-exist with our own earthly realm.

One of the few common links among the spirits observed has been a violent or unusual death. Spirits generally have quite the story to tell on that topic. The absence of this is possible and also it should be stated that having a death of this nature does not ensure becoming a spirit. There is a driving force bringing spirits into contact with their former realm, however. There is no purely accidental ghost. The spirit in question, however, does not have to be aware of what keeps them connected to the mortal realm.

Communication

The main trick there is with spirits is how to communicate. There are many in this predicament who do not fully realize what is going on or are reluctant to do so. That fact is what causes a good deal of the reported hauntings as the spirit is confused and, after a while, will start to lash out at what it feels are intruders in it's life. Communication is the key to coexistence or removing the spirit if it is necessary.

When a spirit is new to that side of the realm, it is invisible and silent to us and exists as a presence barely felt by those who are gifted with the dead or perhaps a cold spot that is easily written off. It takes determination and persistence in order to move on from this state and there are many sad souls who continue on with that kind of existence. The next level of function generally is in the movement of inanimate objects, from moving or throwing across a room. After this generally comes a proper manifestation though there is a common subset who achieve auditory haunting before the ability to appear.

A ghost has the appearance of how they looked and dressed upon the day of their death, sometimes even up to the moment of death as there are a lot of reports of headless apparitions and the like. Voices sound far away, possibly even underwater in a way as they have to speak through to another realm entirely to be heard.

At Rest

Though they are able to exist pretty much forever as far as can be told, it is also possible to put a spirit at rest. Exorcised spirits, however, are not at rest, merely shut up instead and striving to break their bonds. An escaped exorcised spirit can be quite dangerous.

The spirit that wants to be at rest, however, is quite cooperative which can be equally frustrating as those that are helping the spirit, if any, will not know how to do so. If it is possible for the spirit it lies in something they need to share with the living to be avenged or right a wrong or else it is something personal with the spirit that they have caused themselves to stay in contact with the earthly realm in order to see. Nothing will be for certain though until it comes to pass and the spirit finds that they can cross over from their trap.

Magic Users

Established:
                       Always present
                       Location:
                       Worldwide

Population:   At least figured as 3 million worldwide
Magic Users

Magic users have existed all the world over for most likely all of time. There are a multitude of different magics and beliefs linked to the talent and it seems that all sources have power within them.

The history of magic extends back to what we figure is the dawn of time, far too far back and, before it fell out of favor to believe in such things, was respected as an important part of human history which can be seen in references to the oracles of Delphi and other such examples of practitioners throughout history.

Magic and the Practitioner

Magic, it would seem, can be channeled through a variety of means. It's rarely the actual form or ceremony that dictates the success of an attempt of magic but rather the ability to tap into that type of power and a certain open mindness and possibly arrogance to believe that the result you want to happen will simply because you told it to be. Everything else is just tools in better channeling the power as things can be unpredictable, especially with the not quite experienced.

The main drawback with the use of magic is that the more energy one draws in the more fatigue comes along after the spell is complete. Magic is not something to exactly make life easier as it still takes a toll on the body but something to do that which cannot be done by normal means.

Limitations of Magic

A subject that is still under debate and experimentation, it isn't clear exactly what the limits of magic are though people definitely have their own limitations. There are many branches of magic, necromancy, psychic, conjuring, to name a few and it seems to be the practitioner's own personal strength that dictates what he or she is capable of though it is considered fairly impossible to have true mastery over anything.

Demons

A grimoire illustration courtesy of V.I. London

Established:
                       Always present
                       Location:
                       Worldwide and beyond

Population:   Unknown, vast
Demons

The first records involving Demons date back to the early Greek periods though little was understood of them at the time and the accuracy of such records must be called into question. It is a term that is used to house a vast array of beings, some of nature and some akin to religious stories, but their intents are generally the same; destruction, depravity, and to bring about ruin to the world and it's people however the Demon so sees fit. Some might just seek a soul, others might seek to end the world, but all are made to fit under this term.

One similarity most every Demon shares is a thirst for gain. There have been power struggles in their domain, for some Demons this is known as Hell, since the creation of the place. Some, however, prefer escaping the fiery pit, possessing humans and walking the earth. It is extremely rare that anyone has seen a demon outside of their human host and appearances can only be guessed at by earthly knowledge.

Demons and Hell

It can be agreed upon that a Demon's original home is beyond Earth though not much is known about the realities of a Hell. One thing that is apparent through almost all accounts is a power vacuum. There is the figure of the Devil presiding over a multitude of Demons but there is still a struggle for control. It is rare to see many Demons working together for too long before stabbing each other in the back no matter how low or high on the hierarchy they are and some don't care about rankings at all. Many may try to lead but, in the end, it is against a Demon's nature to take orders from it's own kind. The nature of Hell seems to be chaotic.

Still though, when there is enough destruction to be done Demons can band together but don't expect too much cooperation on things that has to be orchestrated. It is all mayhem and clawing the ceiling when too many Demons come to play.

A Demon's Strengths and Weaknesses

Now different Demons are capable of different things so there is not a known structured layout of powers as inherently 'Demon'. You have your incubi and your succubi abile to do what they do, you have your imps of the perverse whispering into people's ears, demons at the crossroad making deals for souls. There are all kinds of demons so their strengths are diverse and mainly depend on what brand of demon they are.

There are some weaknesses they share, however. The chief among these weaknesses would be exorcism. If a Demon is found out to be in a human host by someone who knows what they are doing an exorcism will generally send them right back to start, so to speak. Not that exorcisms are easy. It takes focus, skill, and determination to pull off even the simplest of rites. Most Demons can be harmed but not killed by most any weapon as it damages their host body. There are rumoured religious weapons to take down various high level Demons of that type, as well, blessed ancient relics. It is yet to be determined which legends actually would bear fruit in confronting any, however.
