personality
If someone didn't know Bryn they would easily write him off as more than a bit incompetent. He's a decent enough fellow if a bit bumbling in social situations. He has a sort of naivety; to him that often times gives him the air of a child in a candy shop. At times anyways, Most of the time he is rather appreciative of the very unexpected route that his life has taken and basks in the opportunities that Veritas has afforded him. Once in a while, Bryn slips into a rather morose mindset. Bryn is rather reluctant to admit to these moments of depression, however, and is quick to cover the behavior up. Any time he seems a little extra happy this is usually the cause. He overcompensates for the moment and rather shoves himself into his work and really any aspect of his life that offers itself at the moment to not deal with his own thoughts.
Shyness is Bryn's default behavior among people and it takes a while for him to warm up to most anyone and break into a more relaxed approach to socialization. The little insecurities are still present however, some of many nagging issues in the back of Bryn¡¯s mind. It doesn't help that he is really rather easily flustered. Anything that could possibly make a person embarrassed in the least will certainly work on Bryn. To combat this he usually focuses very much on his work. You wouldn't know it to watch him work, he seems quite scattered whenever he is doing something, but Bryn is quite adept at most tasks given him and usually more than a few steps ahead of the game.
When not being morose and once he has managed to become fairly comfortable around a person Bryn is a good and loyal friend. The stoic, work obsessive nature eases off for the most part and he becomes someone that a person can actually share a few laughs with and generally have a bit of fun. He is easily accepting of people and is always willing to listen to a person's problems or really whatever they wish to talk about. On the other hand and possibly tying back into his insecure nature, Bryn can feel easily slighted. In this instance, Bryn has been known to become more than a bit sulky and withdrawal back into himself if he is of the mind that he is being used or is not being taken seriously. He will never admit to these feelings however as he is usually aware or at least assumes that he is simply acting foolishly. He will instead let whatever slight slide after a while of indulging himself in holding a grudge, as he is extremely determined in his quest to avoid any unnecessary conflict. Necessary conflict is abundant enough so Bryn has no intentions at all in letting petty arguments slip into his life if he can help it.
history
Bryn Rhydderch was born to Tomos and Bridget March 17th, 1983 in Swansea as their first son; Trevor following April 3rd, 1985. The Rhydderch family was a lower middle class family; Tomos a factory worker and Bridget a secretary. They had a nice but tiny house though situated in a nice little suburb of Swansea proper. Life was really almost disgustingly normal, to be perfectly honest. So, suppose it could be said that he was very much a muggle of this world to borrow the term.
Bryn had a fairly calm childhood although he never seemed to find it quite as easy as other children to make friends. Even his little brother was ahead of Bryn by leaps and bounds in that respect. Bryn was standoffish and much preferred his books and the quiet for the most part but did get lonely once in a while. Books were safe, though, and they kept him out of trouble unlike his younger brother. He was the good child, Trevor the 'bad' and, only a few months before Bryn was to leave home, Trevor managed to get himself arrested and imprisoned on drug charges. Despite a feeling of guilt at doing so, Bryn still went through with leaving home for university at Cardiff.
Bryn earned enough school funding to get through to university and quickly found his niche in linguistics. During his time at Cardiff he was only slightly less socially awkward but found it a good deal easier to meet people, as people were rather swift to abuse his time and use him as a study partner and, through much begging on the other party, maybe adding some of their workload for his in a manner that wasn't technically the most academically moral way.
Then came graduate school and the decision to leave Wales behind for the time for London, not that it was exactly a big move but still. He settled into life easily enough, focusing almost religiously on studies. His focus was on historical linguistics but, as he found himself the teacher's assistant to many a entry level course, he has a solid footing on most branches of the subject, something very much encouraged by his adviser and professor he assisted, Dr. Charlotte Lowel, a former government translator who, after some rather hushed excitement, had retired from the post, coming back to her original field. It was her that recommended Bryn to his current post and, if he had known what his friendship to the doctor would have brought him, Bryn isn't wholly certain he was ready for it. It's a whole new world to him and it turns out that words have more power in a literal sense than he had ever imagined.
