It was a bitterly cold night and Dodger could barely feel his fingers as he stood with the general a few streets away from this evenings target building. It was a nice house, he didnt really know what it was he was intending to steal only that the house looked like a good target...like it would have rich pickings. He had ferreted through their rubbish and saw rich pickings there which boded well for the contents of the house. Dodger rubbed his hands together with glee - he was looking forward to this, between the food and the other things which he would be able to sell or trade for things that he wanted. Maybe even something shiney that he could add to his own collection.

Dodger used his elfen magic on his hands and pressed them t the smooth side of the building, his grin widening when they adhered. This was going to be a piece of cake! Oh cake! oh how he hoped that there would be cake! He scaled the pretty facade of the house, it was only a 4 story building but when he got to the roof he was free to find an open and unwarded window to sneak in through. When he found one he pushed gently and slipped through the frame.

Dodgers feet made barely any noise as they hit the luxuriant carpet of the houses floor. It was a beautiful room, lovely proportioned and obviously decorated with taste and with wealth. He shouldn’t have, but he did spend a few minutes looking at the expensive artwork, the beautiful paintings and collected works of art that made up in the living room. He didn’t know what any of them where, couldn’t tell their value from a something bought in a flea market that wasn’t his interest, there would be no way of selling them on without drawing attention to himself.

His attention had been drawn to a number of draws in a desk - those looked as promising a place to start as any. He had been about to lift it when there was the sound of a key in the lock, the faintest click that betrayed the fact he was no longer along. Dodger looked around frantically for somewhere to hide, he snapped his fingers intending to vanish but there must have been wards that he had not counted on and scrambled desperately beneath the desk, hiding in the darkness his ears low, his large eyes, wide and staring.

Odette was running, but her feet weren't fast enough. She could hear screams and yells, coming from the mouths of angry witches and wizards behind her back. No matter how fast she tried she could not escape them. She would never escape them. One of them was Somerest Agrippa. The rest were his friends. Suddenly a door appeared and Odette opened it and entered in the room behind it in an attempt to save herself. There was a window in the room. She slowly walked towards it and after she took a deep breath, she looked outside.

There he was. Somerset Agrippa, with an army of people who only wanted to hurt her. Paulette and Javert were also there, supporting the enemy instead of their own sister. One of them suddenly picked up something from the ground (a rock, most likely) and he threw to the house. The others did the same. And, Agrippa was just there, smiling as hundreds of people tried to destroy her...

Odette's eyes opened and for a couple of minutes she stared at the ceiling above her head. The angry screams were gone and she soon came to the realisation that it was just a dream, that Somerset Agrippa was nowhere near her and he would never be. He was gone, far away from her and he couldn't hurt her. He couldn't take his revenge.

She slowly exited the warmth of her bed and picked up a robe on the chair near her bed. It was not the first time she had nightmares and she knew that it would be useless to try to sleep again. No matter how much tea she drank she could never sleep again until the sun was back on the sky. Odette tried to blame Agrippa for what was happening to her, but it was her who had caused that. She was too guilty to be able to sleep in peace. During the day she was confident enough that she had done the right thing, that the fact she had ruined someone's life was not such a big deal. When the night arrived, though, it was just her alone with herself. She could not fool herself that everything was alright. Part of her chastised her for her actions.

She and Paulette never had a good relationship so it would be foolish to ask her for advice or anything like that. Paulette would most likely laugh at her face and tell her that she deserved what was happening to her. The perfect Paulette, the protector of the poor and miserable would never try to help her, Odette, the evil sister who ruined everyone's life just to make hers better. It seemed that her sister liked to picture herself as some sort of a heroine who helped happiness and justice win in the end. Instead of supporting her own sister, she was protecting some scum, some boy she was not even related to. Odette had received more support from Lyra Potter and Ligeia Baudelaire than her own sister.

There was one particular room Odette always felt comfortable in. It was where all the paintings and sculptures owned by her father were kept. Jean de Montfault was a man who loved and valued art, a trait Odette had inherited from him. She liked all the sorts of arts, and she felt somehow pure when she was playing the piano or when she was drawing some part of the garden. Art helped her calm herself, especially now when she needed it. Now when she was no longer pregnant she could sleep more comfortably, but she was going to marry Fitzroy Prewett in a couple of months and babies would follow shortly after. Fitzroy was a charming gentleman and he treated her well, but like all men he would want her to do her duty as a wife and give him many healthy boys to continue the Prewett name.

She slowly opened the door and entered in, dressed only in her night-gown and robe, her hair freely falling on her back. She sighed and smiled to the first painting her eyes fell upon, a portrait of some lady who lived years before Odette's birth. Her eyes slowly moved around the room, and her fingers pulled out her wand from the robe's pocket. "Lumos" she whispered softly as she moved the light produced by her wand to a corner of the room.

It took her a couple of minutes to realize that she was not alone in the room. Odette was not scared, not surprised to find some miserably looking house elf in front of her. A lot of house elves were working in the de Montfault household so it was not a big surprise for the French to find one in the sitting room. The house elves tended to do their work during the night, when all the de Montfaults were sleeping. Clearly, this little one had decided to take a break since it didn't seem to do any particular job in the room. "Aren't you supposed to be cleaning or cooking right now, elf?" Odette lazily asked the creature. "The morning will arrive in a couple of hours, and there will better be breakfast on the table."

Dodger sat very very still, trying to blend into the wall behind him. He wished that his magic was properly able to work inside the house, but since it was not his masters home he did not have access to all of his elven magics, he could take himself and in, and a few other 'party tricks'. He slunk down, pulling his tattered bowler hat from his head grasping it between his long bony fingers and taking what little time he had to shove his bag of loot behind him, hoping that it would be obscured by the over long green dress coat that also had belonged to his old master as well. It was a little morbid but when the old man had died he had all looted the body, taking the old man's coat and bowler hat to add to his mismatched apparel, which had already consisted of a pair of child trousers that had probably once been rather fine and belonging to some rich child but now they were tattered and ripped, short enough on his stringy legs for his long toed feet to be seen underneath the hems.

Dodger almost lost his head when the young woman, who it would seem lived in this house enquired as to why he was not cleaning or doing something that constituted gainful employment for a house elf. Dodger let out a breath that he had not even be aware that he had been holding It seemed that the woman's immediate response was not to call for Aurors nor squeal for help as was the usual response to finding an elf you did not recognise in the room. However, he supposed that if there were plenty of elves in this house then it was possible that a young lady would not have known all of her attendant elves, especially if, unlike Dodger, they were any good and thusly capable of staying out of sight.

Dodger's large eyes flicked towards the door, considering making a run for it, considering throwing something at this woman as a distraction and then running for it. However, it seemed as though the girl did genuinely believe that he was one of her elves and Dodger was not going to disabuse her of the notion. Dodger plastered on his most appeasing smile. 'Dodg...Dodder' he corrected, instead of giving her his real name, 'has already finished his work miss, I is just checking the pantry for things which is rotten' he said trying to smile sweetly at her, showing her a mouth of teeth that looks rather like a vandalised graveyard. 'Can eh Dodder help the miss wif anything, like bringing her silver wear, jewelry or maybe you tell Dodder to go and fix the valuable things?' he pressed rubbing his hands together at the thought.

The de Montfault household had many house elves, not as many as in Hogwarts, but still plenty of them. They always cleaned the house during the night and during the day they were in the kitchens. Odette had never bothered to meet her servants, the only house elf she knew was the one who took care of her, Tixy. She couldn't recognize Dodder and she fdidn't know they had a house elf called that way until now. Maybe he worked for them for years, but Odette just didn't bother learning his name. It was her father's house, after all, and she was soon going to marry Fitzroy Prewett, so she didn't really need to learn the house elves' names.

She made a grimace when the creature showed its teeth. She didn't expect the house elf to have perfectly white and straight teeth, but she still wanted them to be less disgusting. "No valuable things need fixing, Dodder, but even if they did we would ask someone skilled to fix them." Odette said to the house elf.

"I guess you could come to brush my hair." Odette finally said to the house elf. "I also need to pick some clothes and I cannot wait for Tixy to come."

Dodger tried not to look sulky when she told him that nothing needed to be fixed, it would have been a nice easy score from a snotty house form which he had only hoped to get some food from. He had to admit that since his master had died he had not been any where near as successful on his own as he had. It was the folly of not having someone to fence the things that he stole which was holding him back. Few wizards cared to buy from a house elf, aware that it was probably questionable merchandise and those that would were in no way prepared to spend proper money on items for the same reason. Still it would have been nice to have made a run for it with a few new items, maybe a nice pair of gloves or some children's shoes.

He also tried not to look horrified and taken aback when she asked him to brush her hair. Dodger didnt like hair, it was a weird human thing to have and he himself was blessed to only have a few straggly strands of it on his skull which were usually covered by his cap, It was much better looking than all of those cascades of brown fluffy stuff that grew out of her head like mould. He snapped his fingers and a rather ratty looking brush appeared in his thing fingers and he clambered behind her onto the table and with a look of utter disgust on his face he ran the brush rather tentatively through the woman's hair, trying very hard not to gag. After two strokes of the brush however he couldnt contain himself.

'No no! Dodger won't do it!' he siad throwing the brush to the ground. 'can't and shant! Dodger is a free elf, won't brush nasty human's hair!' he turned up his nose and gave a rather dramatic dry heave.

Odette was rather surprised to see the house elf throw the brush and say that he wouldn't do his job because he was a 'free' elf. She didn't need much time to understand what was happening. This house elf was either a stranger, someone who didn't work for the de Montfault household, or it belonged to Paulette. She could totally imagine her sister fill the house elves' heads with bullshit about freedom. That, or her sister simply wanted to turn even their slaves against her.

"You're Paulette's house elf, aren't you?" Odette asked the house elf and she crossed her arms in front of her chest. Oh, why did her sister hate her so much? To even turn the servants against her! Nobody seemed to love her in this family. Odette couldn't wait to marry Fitzroy and leave this house forever. At least he loved her in a way and he didn't try to turn everyone against her.

There was obvious shock on the woman's face when Dodger made his little pronouncement, but she didnt seem to be reacting to his little pronouncement in the way in which he had expected. These humans were strange and he didnt pretend to understand them, other than their desire for nice things. That he understood entirely. He expected this woman to be angry that a stranger was in her house but she was asking entirely the strangest questions, questions which incensed Dodger.

'No Dodger doesn't belong to no nasty wizards' he spat and in a moment of melodramatic flourish bounded up onto a chair his hands on his skinny hips, his ridiculous oversized green coat flapping as he bounded up, drawing himself up to his full height, even if it wasn't all that tall. 'Dodger is a free elf! He has no master since Master Feligor.' he said the obvious pride and disdain warring for supremacy on his face.

'Dodger not belong to no Paul-et-ia' he snapped butchering the name as he stamped his foot on the table causing it to shake under his weight. 'Dodger looking for stuffs to sells, he nots belonging to no ones! I is not asking if you is belonging to Paul-et-ia'

Master Feligor? Pauletia? Odette felt her head spin and for a moment she wished she was still sleeping. Why, oh, why did she had to come here? There was no difference between the sitting room and her bedroom. Now she had to deal with this filthy creature who was apparently not even working in her kitchens.

Her fingers curled cautiously around her wand when the house elf said that it was looking for stuff to sell. What? Did he just tell her that he was here to steal from her? The house was full of expensive things! Paintings, sculptures, clothes, jewerly! There was not a single room in the de Montfault household which didn't have something valuable in it. Oh, she got in serious trouble!

"What do you want from us, filth?" Odette asked the house elf with disgust in her voice. She wouldn't allow it to go anywhere near her bedroom. All her dresses were in there! Her Worth ballgowns, her expensive hats and her parasols! She wouldn't let it go there! "If you don't leave now I'm going to scream." she threatened the house elf, though she held her wand tightly. Odette knew how to protect herself if needed.

The girl was looking as though she might faint, Dodger secretly hoped that she would for then he would be free to pillage the house un interrupted but since it was the night chances were she was not wearing her corset and from his experience that made her much less likely to properly faint and he considered giving her a shock perhaps by shouting at her in some way or perhaps making a horrid face, he generally found that upper class women were idiotic and easily frightened.

'BAH! Dodger doesn't take orders from no stinky humansis that he doesnt belongs to, and Dodger doesn't belong to no wizards ' he growled putting his hands on his hips in an utterly petchulant manner determined despite the fact that this young withc had caught him all but red handed and most likely had a wadn somewhere on her person that she could likely use to constrain him, or at the very least raise the entire house who would no doubt call aurors and he would end up in the same predicament as old Master Feligor.

'Maybe you should screams!' Dodger said in a manner that was intending to be in some way threatening or cavalier. 'Then all the humansis here will think you is mad and send you awy then I can steals all of your things!' he said with an insane cackle. 'Would I suits one of your pretty bonnets' he said pulling down the brim of his hat to imitate the shape of a bonnet and fluttering his large saucer eyes in a faux feminine manner.

The creature didn't really scared Odette, it mostly disgusted her. She always hated getting herself dirty and the house elf was a really smelly and dirty creature. Still, she didn't want to scream. The house elf was right that that would made her appear as if she was crazy and she didn't want to give Paulette the pleasure to laugh at her for something she was not.

Finally, she decided to call some of her hous elves for help. She didn't really know their names, but she remembered a few of them, Lodo and Winky. They could deal with the filthy house elf which would hopefully run away. "Tixy, Lodo, Winky!" Odette said and three house elves appeared in the room. Odette pointed at the other house elf. "This creature tries to harm me. Stop him."

Dodger couldnt help but smirk at the look of horror and trepidation on the face of the girl. Dodger knew he was an ugly little being, even by Elf standards, he was straggly and starving, he had filthy bits of hair hanigng from his skull and his skin was generally grubby and tired looking. He never bathed and seldom cleaned his clothing and with no master ot order hom to do so he was more than happy to let himself become utterly filthy, it was usually only when his filthy little garret was flooded in a deluge of rain that he and his things became soaked.

Dodger covered his own moment of worry when she summoned the other elves. 'Nasty witch calls stupid slave elves' he said, his voice full of disgust. 'You listen to Dodger nasty Witch' he siad his voice full of menace. He flashed the other elves a rude signal and with a lunge he grabbed the brush she had given him to make him brish her hair. It wasnt worth a lot but it was the principle of not leaving with nothing. 'Dodger will be back!' he snarled angrily. He raised his hand and with a crack like a whip he vanished from the house. Outside he glanced back at the faint light in the ktichen window and stuck his tongue out at the house before turning on his heel and heading into the night.

Summoning the other elves seemed to work, because the filthy creature soon disappeared. It did manage to grab her hair-brush, but it was not particularly expensive and she could always buy a new one. The elves last words were rather threatening, though getting rid of it was not that hard so Odette decided not to worry too much about it.

Still, making sure that no thieves would sneak in the house wouldn't be a bad idea either. "You. Make sure that all the possible enterances are safe. I want no more fithy house elves sneaking in my house." she said to the house elves that were in the room and then she headed towards her bedroom. This whole adventure with the thief was a bit tiring and she could use some more sleep.
