In Character
Full Name: Theodoric Charles Bagman
Nicknames: Theo (or Teddy, to those closest to him)
Birthdate: June 18th, 1850
Current Age: 32
Occupation: Carnie – Illusionist
Hogwarts House: Slytherin
Wand: White Ash, 11”, Solid, Demiguise Hair
Blood Status: Muggleborn
Social Class:Lower
Family: Theodore Charles Bagman, Jr. and Lucille Doncea, Muggles, Location and Well-being Unknown
Appearance: Standing at an even 6 foot tall, Theo is a fairly muscular man. He keeps his brown hair shoulder-length, and usually has some sort of bead or adornment tied in here and there to his wild locks. He stays fairly scruffy, and when he does shave, still leaves some facial hair. Working in the carnival, Theo goes with an exotic clothing theme to go along with his show’s Far East Mystic feel. When not working or having to ‘stay in character’, Theo prefers simple breeches and tunics, anything loose-fitting and comfortable.
History: Born into the slums of Muggle London to a factory worker father and a washer-woman mother, Teddy Bagman’s future looked fairly bleak. He grew up dirty, hungry, and fairly unloved by his parents who only really saw him as another mouth to feed. His parents were not married. His mother washed his father’s clothes and nine months after a heated night of passion in exchange for payment, Teddy was born. Charlie, his father, did take responsibility and moved Lucy and Teddy into his very tiny hovel. At age five, Teddy started working. He shined shoes for tuppance and worked as a barker for a bakery near his home in exchange for food. He was good at making people interested in what he had to say. He was good at making up little rhymes and well-worded phrases to get people to come to the bakery. Though, when he was six, a very unfortunate incident caused him to lose his job as a barker.

It was just another normal day. He was standing on the street corner, minding his own business, shouting out about fresh rolls and cheese Danish. Down the street, a milkman lost control of his horse. The horse and cart came rushing down the street, right at little Teddy. Women screamed and men rushed to help, but there was no need. Teddy hunkered down and some sort of protective barrier shielded him as the horse and cart barreled over him and continued on. He stood, unharmed, and nothing was ever the same again. Teddy’s parents, though Muggles, realized what Teddy was and what it could mean for their future. They encouraged him to learn this magical force within him better. His father taught him card tricks and some sleight of hand, as well. In a month, they were living in a real flat with real feather beds and food every day.

Though, his parents grew greedy. Instead of letting Teddy amuse people on the sidewalk, they forced him to use his skills to pickpocket men and to con ladies out of their jewels. He never liked it, but his parents assured him that he was doing the right thing by providing for the family. When Teddy was nine, a strange man showed up at their flat and spoke to his parents for a long time. Teddy watched the man pull a stick from his pocket and say some funny words at his parents. Their eyes got all glazed over and vacant, and then the man turned and spoke to Teddy. He told him that his name was Mr. Hammond, and that Teddy didn’t have to worry about pickpocketing any longer, as long as he came with him. Teddy recognized the man. He’d gone into the bakery a few times during the same month the previous year. Teddy never forgot a face. Knowing he had no future but one of crime with his parents, Teddy left with Mr. Hammond and, unknowingly, joined the circus by doing so.

Mr. Hammond owned and ran a carnival that traveled all over. Mr. Hammond told Teddy that if he worked hard and earned his keep, he would be sent to school when he came of age to learn how to be even better at magic. Well, Teddy couldn’t say no to that. He was given over to the carnies for them to teach him how to work a carnival. For three years, Teddy did odd jobs around the circus, and, now and again, was allowed to do his little magic show for the Ladies and Gentleman on the Midway. It was much more fun than London, but there was still an element of thievery that never sat well with him. Though, he was indebted to Mr. Hammond and his Circus, so he never complained and did work very hard.

As promised, at age eleven, Teddy was sent off to Hogwarts. He was sorted into Slytherin and was good at making friends. He excelled at Charms and Transfiguration, and was told to take Care of Magical Creature whether he liked it or not. He did well in school and, by the end, of it, was ready to strike out on his own. During his school years, he’d gone to a few theaters with his wealthier friends and fell in love with acting. He liked being the center of attention and getting to try out new lives and new faces. It seemed the ideal life. Though, as soon as he graduated Hogwarts, Mr. Hammond made it perfectly clear that Teddy would be staying on with the carnival to pay back the money Mr. Hammond had spent on his education. Feeling obligated, Teddy didn’t try to run or fight back. He let Mr. Hammond transform him from Teddy the Urchin into Theo the Illusionist.

Over time, he came to like the persona. It was nearly like acting. Every night he had to convince carnival guests that he was in tune with the mysticism of the Far East, that he was Theo the Illusionist, and that he wasn’t some poor kid from London who just knew how to razzle-dazzle the rubes. Years later, Theo doesn’t know any other life but that of a carnie. He’s been doing it for over twenty years now and has made quite a name for himself in the Hammond’s circus. Over the years, his conscience about conning people out of their money and not being an actor had vanished. This is his life now. The gentle, compassionate Teddy who wanted nothing more than to be an actor is long gone, replaced by Theo, a slick charmer with a flair for the dramatic.
Personality: When working, Theo has to keep up a mysterious, aloof aura – the strong, silent type, but, truly, he is much more animated than all that, and likes witty banter and story-telling, both of which he is highly gifted at. Being an actor, at heart, Theo has never been satisfied with just being Theo, so there’s some insecurity there, mostly stemming from his parents’ rejection.
