Sally was always happy to spend a day with her mother. Especially if it was a day of shopping. She was just growing up and it required from her to change her clothes quite often. They could afford to, with the money they got from conning people. For an eleven year old, the blonde was already quite devious, some could say. Truth was, she was doing only what she knew how to. With no knowledge of what is really good or wrong how was she expected to realize that what her beloved mother did was actually a crime?

In her eyes, mother was a saint. She was the greatest person in the world, although she could be a little bit annoying at times when she treated her like a kid she no longer was. Because of the lack of male presence during the period of her childhood where little girls wanted to marry their dads, Sally was more attached to her mother. For her Mildred was everything and she loved being with her. That day she wore one of her better dresses and looked at her mother with curiosity in her eyes:
What do you have planned for today, mother?” The girl asked.

There were precious few things in this world that made Milly truly happy. And Sally – her eleven year old daughter – was one of them. She smiled to her little angel as she asked what she had planned for the day and ran her fingers through her still loose hair. “Why whatever it is you want to do!” She said with a smile. “Today we’ll do whatever your little heart desires.” She didn’t add ‘within reason’ like she was thinking, because she was loathe to put any limits on the suggestions her daughter could have.

Turning to the mirror they had hanging to the wall, she deftly pinned up her hair. During her time in school she and other girls exchanged different fashions of pinning ones hair back, and they seemed to stick with her even through her adulthood. She was good at doing hair, surprisingly, as when not at school her maids always did it for her. She hardly had to lift a finger to get dressed back when she was still with her parents. Her eyes showed the weariness from not being with them any long. From being disowned. But she tried to keep that weariness out of her eyes, lest her daughter see it.

“So what is it you want to do today, Sally dear?” She asked, bending over and hugging her daughter sweetly. She’d never be too big for hugs from her mother, even if as they spoke she was growing into a lovely young woman. Milly could hardly believe how quickly time seemed to have passed. It felt like only yesterday that she had given birth to Sally and yet here they were, her daughter walking and talking and entirely too independent. Yes, it was a sad thing for the mother to realize that her daughter was growing older. To admit that she too was growing older. She wiped the thoughts from her head, however, and smiled at her daughter in earnest, waiting for her reply.

Some people thought that Sally is a little bit weird, but she didn't really care. For a child that never had a father in a critical period of their development, she was dealing quite fine with everything. She did not need some guys in her life. Mother was more than enough and she would not let some idiot get between them. Mother was hers and only hers. Nobody else's. They could think that they have her, but it was never true. They would never know the true Mildred Chambers, the one Sally knew so well and loved so much. Her mother was her idol and her greatest treasure.

The blonde girl never understood what little girls saw in "fathers" anyway. Fathers only took mothers attention from where it was supposed to be - on the child. They couldn't do many things with their daughters anyway, because they were men and they were busy. Mothers were better, especially mom's like hers. In her eyes nobody could have a better mom. Sure, they had worse times, but who doesn't? They always made it out safely and were even closer than before. Sally loved helping her mom out and choosing people whose pockets were deep enough to sponsor them a bit.

Sally watched Mildred pinning up her hair with a smile. Nobody in Hogsmeade had a mother as beautiful as hers. She wanted to be like her, to be able to walk with such poise and grace, to be so beautiful. The most wonderful person in the world. Sally knew she could not have been happier, even if she had a father. Mom loved and cared for her, which was more than other people could say sometime. It didn't really matter if they were rich or poor, as long as they had each other. When mother hugged her, Sally sniffed the sweet scent of her perfume.
"You smell and look beautiful, mother." She said, letting herself get lost in the hug. "The dresses are getting too small on me, mom. I think I have grown again." The blonde angel noted with a face that looked like she was about to apologize for that natural process called growth.

Milly smiled at her daughters compliment. "Thank you, but I'm not nearly as beautiful as you, my little angel." She rubbed her nose slightly against Sally's in a gesture of affection. Aside from her beloved Douglas, Milly had never cared so deeply for someone in her life as she did for Sally. Sally was her friend, her child, her blessing and everything else wonderful in the world. She would never give Sally up for her and only wished she could provide better for her child than she could. She wanted to give Sally the gifted childhood she herself had at one time. But she couldn't, not unless she married one of the upper class men she conned. And she just couldn't bring herself to give up the Chambers name even if it meant giving her daughter more than the dingy flat in the Slums and hand-me-down clothes.

When she said she needed a new dress because she had grown, Milly gave a rich chuckle. "Oh don't remind me!" She said playfully. "Every time you grow I'm reminded that you're no longer my little girl, and that I'm no longer a beautiful young maid." She laughed lightly. She said it in jest, but it was true on some level. Giving a sigh, she tucked an errant lock of hair behind Sally's ear. "You're growing up to be a beautiful young woman Sally...if only your father could see you." Her tone took on a tinge of sadness. She wished Sally had gotten to meet Douglas. He would have been a wonderful father. They would have been even happier than they were at the moment.

Yes, Milly was certain that if Douglas lived, their lives would be infinitely better than it was at the moment. Even if they were still poor, at least Douglas would have worked hard to bring money in. Instead, all they could do to make ends meet was con people out of their wealth. It wasn't the life she'd have chosen, having to use her daughter to help con people out of money. But Sally had insisted on helping in the cons and who was Milly to deny her anything her heart desired? If she couldn't provide her with wealth and tons of fine dresses then she'd at least give her the amusement she got from conning people.

Giving a slight sigh, she waved her hand as though to dismiss her dreary thoughts. "Enough of that." She smiled once more. "We still have some money from our last con. Plenty enough to get you two dresses and perhaps even a new pair of shoes. But that will have to hold you over until we can get more money. How does that sound?" She knew it probably wasn't prudent of her to spend money on two new dresses for her daughter, but they were needed and she wasn't going to let her daughter run around in ill fitting rags. It was bad enough that most of her clothes were old, but to not fit properly! She couldn't allow that in the least.

Sally Chambers for a girl born and raised in the Slums could be a pretty vain girl. She was capable of spending a great deal of time in front of a mirror, just to make sure she looks good. It usually helped her and mother to con people. The girl was quite an actress – she could do a spoiled little rich girl and poor little orphan just as well. Yes, for an eleven year old Sally could be quite a devious creature. She knew the value of looks and so she always made sure to dress in light colors and to seem carefree and sweet so people would like her.
Another asset of hers was the fact she looked young. She could pass for a ten or nine year old if she wanted to. Appropriate clothes, hairdo and voila! Being a child of a con artist was just like that. She quickly learned how to cheat people and enjoyed it. Sally wanted to help her mom that way. It was them against the world. Always the two of them. The little blonde adored her mother more than anything and quickly scared off any men that could try and take her away from the girl.

That was probably also the reason that Sally usually did not get involved in what other kids do. Truth be told, she preferred to stay away from most of them, unless she had a really good interest in that. Upper class kids were often easy to persuade and steal from. Other way also included making them trust her enough to bring home. Yes, Sally had perfectly mastered playing an upper class kid. Her tone, her moves, everything was resembling that of an upper class little girl. You'd have to watch her extremely carefully to realize that it was all just playing, not the real girl. She was simply to good at it.

I will always be your little girl, mother. In my eyes you will always be a fair, young maden. You're the most beautiful of all!” The girl said, cuddling to her mother when she became sad thinking about father. Sally did not like her mother feeling sad. She did not want a father, but she did not want Millie to be sad either. She wanted her all for herself, but she wanted both of them happy, not just one of them.
”This sounds amazing, mother, but how about we get me and you new dresses! Matching dresses! Wouldn't it be lovely, mother?” The girl exclaimed, just imagining the view.
