Appearance: Douglas is a rather averagely sized man at 5 feet and 11 inches in height. He has a rugged look to him as he is not one to be strict with a shaving regime, he is also a well-built man and quite stocky and muscular. He is right handed and writes with the same hand he holds his wand. He dresses well but is not overly flamboyant or 'showy' with his clothing tastes, mainly because he was not brought up with the luxury to do so and does not feel it is necessary.
History: Douglas was the second child born to his parents and the first son. From the moment Douglas could walk he became his father's pride and joy. His father was a fisherman and his mother a fishmonger as was common in the seafaring town they resided in. As a young child, Douglas would often be taken on fishing expeditions with his father and by the time he was five, he knew how to help out and make good use of his presence. He came to idolize his father and was expected to follow in his footsteps when he was older. When Robert was old enough to help too, Douglas took his younger brother under his wing and quickly became very protective of him. Meanwhile their mother would do her best to save the meager earnings she brought in to support her family. Gregory was a very sickly boy and so did not join Douglas and Robert on their father's fishing trips, instead staying at home with their mother and sister.
It was while he was on one of his father's fishing trips at the age of eight, that he displayed his first and completely unexpected sign of magic. He was helping pull up a fishing net when the rope snapped. He reached out with his hand to try and catch it before all the fish were released and right before his eyes, the fibers of rope knitted together again and saved the catch. He hadn't known what to make of it and was too afraid to speak of it to anyone else but his younger brother in confidence.
When Douglas received his Hogwarts letter, he had great trouble understanding it for he was completely illiterate, as was the rest of his family. When his mother took him to one of the neighbors who knew how to read, it quickly became apparent that he was a wizard and the family felt the immediate affects of this. Their neighbors and friends shunned the family for Douglas's magic. His father lost his job, as did his mother and they were forced to pack up their belongings and move away. His mother blamed him for it and was prepared to disown him completely but his father would not hear of it. Douglas' father insisted he attend the school and invested all his savings to pay for his education.
Determined not to be a waste and disappoint his family any further, he went off to magic school and worked very hard to both fit in and learn how to read and write on top of all the new things he was being taught. As a Gryffindor, he fit in very quickly despite his impoverished background and soon came to love the school and all the new friends he made. He turned out to be a very smart boy and picked up reading and writing very quickly, though his handwriting left much to be desired.
His first year left the skinny little boy a much more grown up one with more confidence than he had ever had before. His father was proud to see his eldest son flourishing so and thus refused to hear his wife's complaints that Douglas' schooling was slowly starving them all. His older sister who had not shown signs of magic, nor received a letter to attend the school was colder than she had ever been to him upon his return. She had always shown a jealous tendency towards him for occupying a special place in their father's heart but his magical abilities apparently only worsened her envy.
Douglas happily returned to a second year of schooling at Hogwarts, eager to see all his friends again and learn more magic. It was during the sorting ceremony that year, that everything changed for him. He couldn't help but stare transfixed at the girl who he didn't even know the name of, not until she was called up as 'Henley, Mildred' and promptly placed in Slytherin house. How he had hoped in those moments the hat had debated her fate that she would be in Gryffindor with him but alas... she was not.
A few weeks into the school year, he taught himself how to summon a bouquet of flowers which he then presented to her in the hopes she would at least like them but he was laughed at. Despite her rebuff, he was determined not to give up. He thought getting on the Quidditch team would impress her and practiced flying tirelessly before the tryouts where he successfully achieved a position as a chaser. When that failed to work, he spent the next few years of school bombarding her with gifts, poetry, songs and displays of his feelings for her - all of which were rejected.
In his fifth year he was made a Gryffindor prefect and continued trying to win her affections but to little avail. Meanwhile, it became apparent that his younger brothers and sisters were not destined for magic and never came to join him at Hogwarts. Douglas was particularly disappointed that Robert was not to join hm. At the end of his fifth year he had managed to succeed in obtaining very good OWL scores but not the heart of Mildred Henley.
His sixth year was not much more successful but he did not give up on her, continuing to show his love and give her tokens of his affections for her but she would have none of it. He was made Head Boy in his seventh year and as it was his last year to be in the same place and setting as his Mildred before he fell to his expected social place and she remained unattainable even to look at from the likes of him, he tried even harder to win her and finally, finally she gave in and permitted him a kiss! It seemed he had succeed in winning her and the pair of them maintained a very secret love affair from then on.
That spring, they consummated their love but before long, it became apparent that they had done more than just that and Mildred was expecting. For all his good grades, he hadn't thought that what they had could or would ever result in a child, mainly because he just hadn't thought. Realizing there was only one thing to do to fix everything (though he wasn't at all reluctant to do so, just disappointed it couldn't be under different circumstances), he proposed to her. He fully intended to right the wrong he felt he had done her and take full responsibility for it. Her acceptance was the happiest moment of his life and he promised to her he would make his fortune and she would live the life she had been born to. It was a steep promise but his father had always assured him that he would achieve great things with his education and magical abilities.
Once he left Hogwarts with a fair few NEWTs, he intended to set himself up in the Ministry and work his way to the top. Everything looked to be working out until Mildred's father and brother managed to track him down. Faced with threats and blackmail, they forced him to stay away from Mildred. Heartbroken and riddled with guilt, he never found out what became of her. He went back to live with his family and helped his father and brothers to support the rest of the family. This lasted for a year or so before he decided to pick himself up again and go against the wishes of Mildred's family. He felt a fool for having given in to their pressures and effectively abandoning her.
He went to London and began saving money by working hard labor for various employers until he had worked his way up enough to have enough money to pay for an education in the law, having heard the law paid well and was a respectable trade. He avoided the magical community as he did, not wanting to catch the attention of the Henley's in case they sabotaged him.
By the age of twenty-six he was a fully-qualified lawyer with experience in muggle courtrooms and built up a glowing reputation by the age of twenty-eight. It was then that he decided he wanted to make a stab at the Ministry, his heart set on a spot in the Department of Magical Law enforcement.
In the early months of 1882, he reemerged into wizarding society and moved to Hogsmeade where he applied for a job at the Ministry. He succeeded in securing his position as a lawyer. Meanwhile, he tried to find out what had become of Mildred but was very unsuccessful. He wanted to know if she had married or not, what their child was like, how she was but could find nothing despite his efforts. He has been working tirelessly and has succeeded in collecting for himself a tidy fortune and has managed to reinvent himself completely, though he is not the most respected in the eyes of some of the older families and those who recognize him for who he was.
Personality: Honest, brave, determined, persistent, fair-minded, hard-working, thick-skinned, self-assured, at times a little impulsive, can get a little ahead of himself at times, not always very wise, risk-taker, open minded, very much like a dog with a bone and has a tendency towards 'tunnel-vision' in the sense that he gets very focused on his goals and can neglect other things.
Sample Roleplay Post: Non merci.
