Gideon Gordon Browne was not planning to work in his family's shop. He never found anything attractive in his family's profession, despite the fact that his father always tried to teach him how to work in the shop. Gideon found different things attractive, like potion-making and Herbology. He wanted to work in the Hospital, but he knew that his goal was a difficult one. She didn't even know someone who worked in the Hospital, so he didn't actually know what to do in order to ne employed there.

The Job Fair was like a deus ex machina to the Ravenclaw. He could gather all the needed information there, from people who actually worked in the hospital. Besides, the wizard heard that students would be hired for the summer. The idea of working in the hospital for three months was definitely attractive to the boy.

He walked towards the stand of the hospital, where a couple of seventh years were gathered. He forced himself to look a little stronger, healers were strong and confident people, after all. He looked at one of the healers, who was talking with another boy. Once he finished and the boy walked away, Gideon took a big breath and walked towards the healer. That was going to be an interesting day.

James' promotion to Assistant Head was so recent that he hardly considered himself the rightful occupier of the post; when people referred to him as 'Asst. Head Riley,' he assumed they were either making fun of him (as was often the case, as with Felicity), or that they had somehow mistaken him for someone else. His older brother, perhaps; the responsible Riley, the one who got promotions. Then again, James was starting to grow up--having a real courtship, raising children, albeit not his own--it was about time he "made something" of himself.

Still, this was hardly a duty he'd expected to be on the job description. Internship fair? He understood the need, of course; since he'd moved up they would need to promote one of the interns to a full healer sometime soon, probably around the time that school was getting out, so that they could snatch up another intern quickly--goodness knows that the ward was already busy enough without being doubly short-staffed!

Still, couldn't they have picked someone... more charismatic than James? Fee would have been the ideal candidate. Fee was cute, and young enough that she might even have something in common with these students. He, on the other hand--well, he could try to answer the questions the kids had, but he doubted he was being very convincing.

Still, it was what they were paying him to do today--which was a little sad given that the Spell Damage wing would be short two healers today--so he'd better do it. Giving a tired smile to the boy who approached, James gestured to the little chair on the other side of the booth, in case he wanted to sit. "Hello, there. Interested in a career as a healer?"

Gideon took a big breath and then put his most confident face on. If he wanted to work as a healer he would have to be confident, like the man who just spoke to him. " Yes." Gideon replied to the man, annoyed by himself for not giving a more attractive answer.

The Ravenclaw looked around awkwardly, trying to think of a potential quiestion. Would the healer concider him big headed if he told him he was good at Potions and Herbology? What if a healer didn't have to be good at Potions and Herbology? Well, Gideon was an excellent student anyway, but Potions and Herbology were the ones he was really good at. " So, I heard you are hiring students for the summer." Gideon decided to ask, trying to not seem shy or awkward. " I would love to gain some experience for the future... "

Gideon suddenly wished he was a Seventh Year. He wouldn't have to wait another year in order to work in the Hospital. Sure, he enjoyed his classes in the castle, but was disappointed when the position of the prefect was given to Edmund Carrington. Gideon never understood this decision. Mr Carrington was indeed a good student, but the fact he run around kissing slum rats was unacceptable, especially since his mother was teaching at Hogwarts.

James nodded and tried to offer what he hoped was an encouraging smile to the boy, who was clearly quite nervous. James remembered feeling just as nervous, when he had applied for his job--of course, he hadn't shown it, because he had been taught by example from Daniel and the rest of his family that confidence paid, and if he was going to make up for the sting of not getting elected prefect, he would have to get that job.

Of course, James hadn't had an opportunity like this one to explore his options; he'd simply walked up to the hospital and informed them that he was going to start working there, and after seeing his NEWT scores they more or less agreed.

"Our summer internships are a relatively new program. Basically the hospital heirarchy is that everyone starts out at internship level--much like in the Ministry--and then when full-time healer positions open, they are filled from among the interns. Occasionally interns transfer departments, but generally you would pick one particular department and stick with it," he explained. He himself had switched, but there had been extenuating circumstances; most folk didn't.

"The summer internships are temporary positions which, after completion, would basically assure you a position as an intern after graduation, provided that nothing unreasonable occurs in the meantime. They work in your favor in that there's less pressure on the NEWT grades, since we've seen what you can do. It also gives you an opportunity to try out a few different fields. Summer interns generally have a short amount of time in all of the various departments, and then when and if you return after graduation you would choose your focus department based on your interests."

Of course, James was leaving out the part about how the hospital benefitted from the cheap summer labor, but the fair wasn't really about benefiting the hospital, or at least it wasn't intended to be. This was all about what the jobs could do for the students, so that was what he was trying to show.

That sounded perfect for Gideon. So if he spent the summer as an intern he would most likely receive a job after graduation. Gideon doubted that his NEWTs wouldn't be acceptable, but there were probably many other students who would want to start a career in the hospital.

" Do I have to sign up for an intership?" Gideon asked the man with curiousity, now feeling a bit more comfortable. This man would most likely be his boss, so Gideon wanted to make an impression. Healers and doctors were decisive people, so he had to seem as one too. His mother often told him that shyness and nervousness would never help him go far in life. He had nothing to worry about, after all, his grades at potions and herbology were excellent and he was always a dedicated student, thus, he would be a dedicated healer as well.

James nodded eagerly; something about the boy just said smart, which meant that they definitely wanted him. For some intern positions--the summer interns being amoung them--brains weren't really a requirement; what was needed was just an extra pair of hands to steady the patient or assist with things here and there, fetch potion ingredients, clean instruments, etc.; at the same time, intellect certainly never hurt, and it was a requirement for any sort of advancement. It was what set Felicity apart from the other interns--well, that and all of her other... qualifications.

He shouldn't be thinking about Fee right now, not with recruitment to be done.

"Well, yes, ideally you'd be available for a short interview with a department head--probably during your last Hogsmeade trip. There is still one left, isn't there?" he asked, without really waiting for an answer. He was fairly certain someone had told him something to that extent. "And I'd be happy to arrange that now. If you have any sort of inclination for which department you're interested in, we can try and arrange one with that particular head; otherwise we can pick one at random. The interview is really to get a more specific idea of what sort of tasks would be open to you as an intern," he explained, sifting through the paperwork on his side of the table to try and find that interview schedule he'd been supposed to fill out.

" Yes, sir, on May Sixth" Gideon replied to James, feeling excited that he was going to work in the hospital, even as an intern. The Ravenclaw couldn't wait to graduate, so he could work in the hospital as a real healer. This was the only job he would enjoy doing, and no family shop was going to stop him from making his dream become truth. Sampson could take care of the stupid shop, Odira too. Sometimes, Gideon was sure that if Odira was born a male, she would open her own business and he truly believed that it would soon become one of Hogsmeade's most succesful shops.

" I really enjoy potions and herbology, sir." Gideon said, trying not to sound as someone who bragged too much. He didn't want the other man concider him cocky. Cockiness never helped anyone succeed in life and Gideon did not want to sound cocky. What if James concidered him cocky, thus unable to work in the hospital? Healers had to possess steady hands, not only intelligence. Sure, intelligence was important but Gideon had heard of many healers who were prefects and excellent students and yet they failed with their profession.

James smiled at the boy's enthusiasm. He'd do well enough in the hospital, but it was a shame he wasn't interested (or at least not particularly interested) in Spell Damage, because they really were going to be fairly short staffed at this point, unless the rest of the afternoon was particularly fruitful.

"In that case, I think we'll schedule you an interview with Miss Mariana MacNair," he said with a nod, marking it down on his parchment. "She's the Assistant Head of Potions and Plant Poisoning, which seems like it would be a good fit for you, hm? Let's see--May 6th at around four PM?"

He made the appointment on the little sheet he'd been given to do just that, then looked up at the boy, adding in confident, comforting tones, "I think you'll do very well as a healer. You have that look about you. Now, first and last name, please, for the records?"

Mariana Macnair. Gideon could only guess that the woman was somehow related to Betony Macnair, who was a year older than him. The Macnair family was related to some old wizarding families, like the Lestranges and the Black, so it wouldn't be a surprise for Gideon to hear that a woman of one of those families had such a high position at the hospital. His mother once told him that the Browne family was also related to some old families, but it seemed that they were not as lucky as the Lestranges or the Malfoys to actually live in one of those huge houses in Wellingtonshire. It was not that the Browne family was poor, in fact, they were a particularly rich middle class family and Gideon never lacked anything.

James's comment made Gideon smile awkwardly. So he did look as a good healer? The man was a healer, so his judgement had to be right. Gideon felt the happiest person on earth, but he tried not to look overly enthusiastic. " Gideon Browne, sir." Gideon replied, his voice expecially calm, despite the enthusiasm that was exploding inside his body.

"Gid-ion Browne," James repeated as he copied the name down. The parchment was magically linked to one at the hospital; if Mariana MacNair had any problem with the interview, the name would be stricken out in a moment. It appeared to be staying, however, which meant she had no objection. James smiled broadly at the boy as he finished and looked up. "Well, we may run into each other before your interview next month--if not, then we'll definitely be seeing something of each other this summer, won't we, Mr. Browne?"

He smiled again, offering his hand to shake. "Best of luck with the remainder of your classes this year, Mr. Browne."
