The second year made his excuses to the boys with whom he ate, darting as quickly as he could back to Gryffindor Tower to fetch what he would need: his wand, a pair of boots, and a heavy winter cloak. Leaving partway through dinner, he realized now, had been a brilliant idea—no doubt most of the prefects and staff would be too busy gorging themselves on their meals to notice a measly second year, tall though he might have been, creeping off the the forest in the quickly dimming evening light. Castor had no doubt that what he was doing was very much against a variety of school rules, but right now it was fear of the relentless hassling Rommy would give him, not fear of detentions—or worse, a notion that, for now, he was trying very much to keep from his mind—that would propel his actions.

Walking through the front doors seemed too brazen a concept to the young wizard, but his limited time at the castle and his lack of older siblings to inform him thus ensured he knew no other way out. Trying to look inconspicuous, he abandoned the castle and made, quite briskly, his way down the lawn to the tree line.

Tentatively, the boy stepped into the forest—not far; he would not like to be more than a yard, perhaps two, from the school grounds proper. Being from elsewhere, he had not yet had cause to venture even this far into the woods; the fading like, coupled with the winter chill, made it quite an eerie place indeed. With growing apprehension, Castor wished Rommy would hurry the hell up—and then realized that they had not said where in the forest they would meet. The Gryffindor sighed, an action made visible by the chill. This could be a long wait, and an even longer evening. Figuring doing something was better than doing nothing, the boy readied his wand with a simple lumos and stepped further into the forest.

YOU DON'T NEED MUCH TO SET ME FREE
This was not the first time Rosamund would go in the forest, but it was the first time she was going to go alone. The Slytherin doubted that Castor was like the boys she used to go in the forest with. Sure, he was a Gryffindor, thus brave and strong and a whole bunch of other stuff, but Rommy doubted that he was made for the forest. Even if he didn't seem as some wealthy and snobby boy to Rommy, he was certainly not a slum rat.

Before walking out to the dark of the night, Rommy had payed the school's kitchen a visit. She carried a small bag made of leather which contained two sandwiches, water and a two large pieces of cakes the house elves practically forced her to take. Oh, it was hard for Rommy to actually dislike these creatures. Sometimes the Slytherin feared that if she refused to eat something they offered her, they would tie her in a chair and force her to eat until they felt like they were good house elves.

She rolled her eyes when Castor was late. A small suspicion that he had probably chickened out rushed in her head, but she tried to chase it away. Castor didn't seem as a stupid person to Rommy. Not at all. She had the friendships needed to make his life hell at Hogwarts, so, of course he was going to show up.

Finally, she decided to look for Castor. They couldn't get lost when they were not even in the forest. She whispered Lumos and then she started walking around the thick foliage, wishing she had brought her cat along with her, just in case.

Finally, she spotted the Gryffindor and a huge smile appeared on her lips. " Oh there you are." she said cheerfully, as if they were going to a field trip in a field full of lambs and butterflies and happiness, and not in a rather dangerous trip in a forest full of beasts. " Let's go!" she said and she started walking deeper in the forest.

The soft forest sounds were punctuated by the growing volume of light footsteps approaching behind him, causing Castor’s own to slow warily. Though he directed his wand to give him greater visibility, the boy could see nothing amiss, which only served to unnerve him further. Still, he kept going, apprehensive though he was. How in the world had he let Rommy convince him that this would be a good idea?! Had he not needed to find her—frightened though he might have been, it would have been unchivalrous to leave the young witch to fend for herself in the Forbidden Forest after sundown.

It was bad enough that he had to be there on his own now.

A girlish voice from behind him nearly caused Castor to leap out of his skin; as it was, the thirteen-year-old thought he might die of fright. The lanky boy whipped around, wand at the ready and pointed squarely at the redhead’s nose, taking a moment to realize that the speaker had been Rommy herself and that, no, he wasn’t about to be eaten by some sort of hell beast dragged to the surface to punish him for his rule-breaking. Though Castor was not still convinced he would not be punished for this particular transgression; past experience had already warned him that Rommy’s company—and the goading that came with it—might serve punishment enough.

“There I am? You’re the one who never said where to meet. Useless Slytherins,” the second year muttered under his breath, neither knowing nor caring whether the girl was listening or not. After tonight, Castor vowed, he would stay safely tucked in Gryffindor Tower after hours, and the greatest thrill he would allow himself flying or particularly aggressive bouts of Wizard Chess. None of this forest exploration nonsense; that could be left until one of them knew enough magic to protect themselves!

This vow, however, did the boy little good now.

He sighed. “Where are we going anyway, Rommy?” Surely, after all, she must have some idea; this expedition was her idea to begin with, and the first year led the way as if it were simply a stroll through Padmore Park.

How dare he insult Slytherin? Rommy glared at Castor for almost half a minute, tempted to hit him with a stick or something. Stupid Gryffindors. Rommy couldn't stand how they run around showing off because they were supposed to be good looking, clever and brave. Slytherin's Quidditch players were way more handsome. They had Maximillian de Winter, Declan and some other boys Rommy did not care about but they were surely way more good looking than Castor. More good looking than he could even hope for. Gryffindor's Quidditch players looked like wet kittens who peed in their pants after someone hit them with a broomstick. Besides, Slytherins were at least ambitious and clever enough to make their goals reality. What did Gryffindor's do? They run around showing off.

Rosamund rolled her eyes, tempted to call Gryffindor the house of miserable losers, but she decided to answer his second quiestion instead. " Oh, in the forest, obviously." she replied with sarcasm in her voice. Seriously, where did he think they are going? To Count Dracula's castle or something? And then he called Slytherins useless. " We are going to search for a spirit. There are myths about a girl who was killed in the forest and we are going to search for her and hopefully find her ghost." Rosamund said calmly. She did not believe such bullshit, but Castor seemed stupid enough to actually believe her story. " Also, I hope we will find animals. Wolves, foxes, snakes... Maybe centaurs too. The angrier the centaur the better. I heard there was some dragon here. Oh and trolls. And huge spiders which eat humans. It is going to be reeeally fun." Rommy said, talking about beasts as if they were kittens.

Great. They were ghost hunting. It was a mercy that Hogwarts had already (mostly) desensitized him to ghosts. Had that not been the case, he might find himself even more uncomfortable than he already was—enough to make him back out. Still, Castor could not help the fact that he was already apprehensive, but the second year did his utmost to ensure that that didn’t show. Then her list grew.

The normal animals he could have dealt with. Foxes were harmless, and so were snakes—at least, all the ones in Britain, so far as he knew—and wolves tended to leave humans alone, did they not? And centaurs, at least, were rational beings (so he had been told), and so probably wouldn’t go around attacking children. But dragons? Trolls? Human-eating spiders?! For a muggleborn, this information had been hard enough to take in at all, but now he had let himself get talked into looking for such dangers?

“I hope they eat you first,” he muttered as he stalked off into the woods, more or less certain that the Slytherin was following. “You’re chubbier than me since you don’t play quidditch; I’m far too lean for them.” Though the Gryffindor would truly be upset if something ate his companion, the fact that he likely would not be the first choice where meals were concerned provided an odd measure of comfort for him.

Castor's comment made Rommy blush and look at the ground. Did he view her that way? As fat and ugly? Was she that ugly? Rommy never concidered herself a great beauty, but she was still proud of her fiery red hair. She was still eleven years old, so her body was still child-like. Her body would start developing once she reached her third year.

But there are pretty first years, Rommy. Cecily Gallivan is pretty. Piper O'Hara is pretty. Elmira Gale is pretty...

Rommy shook her head, before her list became too long. They were pretty because they were rich. Or, at least Cecily Gallivan was rich. That was the reason she was so pretty in everyone's eyes. She had expensive dresses, and beautiful jewerly, of course she was pretty!

" I bet they will mistake you for a rat and they will eat you." Rommy threw at Castor, her voice uncomfortably shaking. She couldn't cry in front if him! She couldn't cry in front of a boy! If she allowed Castor to see her cry then she would have to beat him with a stick so he wouldn't tell anyone what happened. Rommy concidered herself strong and independant, and strong and independant girls didn't cry.

Him? A rat? No, rats were snarly little things with bad teeth and bad attitudes. He might not have had a lot of bulk on him, but that did not describe Castor in the least! “Why eat a rat when they could have a pig?” the Gryffindor retorted cruelly, though he regretted his words instantly. After all, for all this inane quest was her doing, she was—mostly a nice enough girl. He did not take back his words though, but he did have the decency to cast his eyes downwards. Maybe if he was very lucky, she was not upset enough to stop being friends with him, but still upset enough that they could go back to the castle.

Rommy stared at Castor with wide eyes. Her lower lip started shaking sligthly. He called her a pig. He called her fat. Fat. Castor thought that she was a fat pig. Probably everyone else thought that too. She felt tears strolling down her face and her shoulders started shaking as she raised her fist and then pointed at Castor. " You have the personality of a pig!" she yelled at him and then she turned around and started running into the woods.

How could he be so cruel! How could she think that he was her friend! Boys were no friends. Only Declan was a good friend and honestly he seemed as a better gentleman than Castor. The Gryffindor had probably spent hours making fun of her with his miserable friends. How could he trust him! Gryffindors were all a bunch of fools, how could she trust them.

She then stopped and and leaned to a tree. How foolish, foolish, foolish she was. How could she actually concider Castor a friend? He had to pay. She was going to beat him. No, she was going to make Declan beat him. Or even worse she was going to make all of her Slytherin male friends beat him at once. Or maybe she could ask that creepy Merrythought Galatea to do some curse on him. To him and to all the stupid filthy Gryffindors.

Suddenly, she heard a weird noise. She raised her head, only to hear a grunt and then a huge dark pig running towards her. Rommy freezed for a moment and then she managed to gain control over her legs and run.

Then she yelled with terror. " CASTOR!" She tried to run faster. That pig couldn't kill her. " CASTOR!"

    Now he had done it!

Before the Gryffindor had a chance to apologize for his words, Rommy was off, bounding further into the forest’s depths. Though the second year knew he had a choice before him, to Castor it did not seem like he had any choice in the matter at all: while he could simply return to his common room as he should have done before he had even left, that would mean leaving Rommy stranded in the forest all by herself, and he couldn’t do that! As much of a pest as he might find her, she was still a girl, still younger than him, and—sort of—his friend. With a deep breath to steel himself for what might have been an incredibly stupid idea, the chaser ran off after her, with only the faint light cast by his wand to guide him safely over the roots and rocks of the forest floor.

“Rommy!” Castor called out as he ran, though it was scarcely above his usual volume—while he wanted to find her, the Gryffindor was too frightened to attract unwanted attention. Ugh, why had he had to open his big mouth? And why did she have to insist on doing this to begin with? After some running, he could hear his name being called out through the trees; apparently she had not shared his cautious quiet.

Making a beeline in the direction of her voice, the second year came upon the largest pig he had ever seen—not a normal pig like those on his uncle’s farm, but something he had seen only in books before. A boar, his father had called such beasts, and this one was standing right between Castor and the redhead.

Without hesitation, he hurled a stunning spell in the beast’s direction, missing the thing entirely. Castor had never been one to perform under pressure, save for at quidditch. Running—against the desire of every nerve in his body wanting to stay well away from the beast—after the pair, the second year hurled stunner after stunner until finally one seemed to catch.

Out of breath, Castor paused before calling out, “Rommy, come here!”

Rommy was never a coward, but this time she was afraid. That boar could kill her and Castor would probably leave her corpse in the woods and return to the safety of the castle. Why would he save her after he called him a rat? Rommy was not sure if she would try to save him after he called her a pig.

Still, he came to save her. Or, well, to save the both of them. She watched with wide eyes as he attacked the boar with stunning spells, while she was staring at him and the pig with disbelief. Well, she had to admit, he was rather strong for a second year. He fought with the boar while she just stared there holding her wand, as if she had peed in her pants. Her friends would laugh at her if her saw her now. Declan would call her a whiny brat or something like that.

Finally, after many attempts, Castor managed to defeat the boar. The redhead stared with curiousity at the boar, wondering if it was dead. She would hate herself if the boar was dead because of her. Rommy loved animals, even the ones that wanted to kill her.

When Castor told her to go to him, Rommy turned and glared at him, just for a couple of seconds. " I'm coming don't yell at me!" she yelled at the Gryffindor, but then she regreted it. He had saved her, it would be extremly egoistic of her to yell at him and treat him miserably. Still, Rommy was not sure what she could do. Most girls would probably run straight towards Castor and hug him and thank him for his braveness, but that was lame and Rommy would never be caught hugging Castor in the woods or anywhere near the castle. What if Declan saw her? He would make fun of her until her death!

She lowered her eyes, blushing slightly, trying to find a way to thank him without sounding that he liked him or something. Because she didn't. She wanted to beat him up with a stick, or at least that was what she wanted to convince herself. Thanking others was a really, really difficult task. " I, um, I'm sorry for yelling at you." she said quietly, not daring to look at him. " You are not a rat and I... um... Well, thanks for saving me." she murmured glaring at the ground.

Though during his actions he had not expected gratitude, her pitiful excuse for it now lit a fire under Castor. He had just saved her from a wild animal, and the best she could must was a ‘yeah, thanks’?! They would not have even been in this position had she not insisted they wander off into the forest after hours; perhaps he should have let the boar terrorize her some more, knock some sense into that fire-covered head of hers. But no, that would not have been the gallant thing to do, and he was a Gryffindor, after all.

“You’re welcome,” he responded tersely, eyes looking back into the trees from which they had emerged. “Perhaps we should go back to the castle?” the second year suggested, tone more hopeful now. “After all, I don’t fancy coming up against that—or something worse—again.”

Bah, Castor was such a pansy! Rommy wanted more adventures! Sure, the boar had scared her, but its attack added some suspense! Then again, searching for poisonus human eating spiders was probably not a good idea. They would most likely get eaten. Perhaps next time it would be a better idea to bring Declan. He was brave and he wouldn't step back when some pig attacked them.

" Fine" Rommy replied with a heavy sigh. If he wanted to return to the castle, then they were going to return. Besides, it wouldn't be wise to be out of the school for too long. What if they got caught by a prefect or a teacher? Merlin knew what people would assume about a girl and a boy being in the forest in the night.

" That doesn't mean you got rid of me, though." she added with a wolfish grin. Then, she turned around and started walking back to the castle.

It was becoming very evident to Castor that he ought to have been in Ravenclaw and Rommy in Gryffindor, that the Sorting Hat had played some elaborate joke on them, and now the pair were paying the price. After all, weren’t Slytherins supposed to be self-centered? Shouldn’t self-preservation play into that? Instead, it seemed the young redhead had gotten the Gryffindor sense of adventure, which Castor in turn seemed to have sidestepped in favour of taking on common sense instead.

Regardless of the house-related confusion, though, things seemed to be resolving themselves: however reserved her consent might have been, the first year finally agreed to abandon their foolish ‘adventures’ and return to the safety of the castle.

Wait. Got rid of her? Though that had not been the boy’s intention, the second year could not help but think that the girl’s words had sounded more like a threat. As lengthy legs hastened to keep up with her on the return to the castle, Castor came to realize—and not happily—that their misadventures were not over. With a quiet sigh, he resigned himself to the fact that he was stuck with this girl, and he could only hope that the...friendship? would allow him to finish his schooling in one piece.
