So, as I wait for productivity to resume, I'm sitting here thinking "It would be fun to play a veela!" So the general proposal is introducing them as a playable race.
However, I also realize that it would be relatively safe to assume we'd get a disproportionate influx of them should this happen, because they are freaking awesome. Perhaps introducing them as a prize for OOC events, as is already done with ghosts?

You're talking full Veela, not part-Veela?

We can't have full veela, but I have a veela chick. She's 3/4 veela...so she's mostly veela. That is perfectly acceptable x]

I fully support the idea of having a few different "special" character types to choose from for OOC prizes. Ghosts, Veela, Hags...? That way we could limit the amount of them on the board but still include them. And people who don't necessarily want a ghost would still feel inclined to try and win contests. ;]
I personally have no interest in Veela, but I think they'd be a neat addition to the site if we had them in severe moderation, like Kayte is suggesting.

(I don't know if Werewolves are playable) But if they aren't, then that'd be cool to have them as playable. If they are, then my apologies.
It'd also be interesting to have Fairies as a playable race, but I don't know how abundant they would be in the Harry Potter world.
Also, (not me), some people might be interested in playing Giants.

Werewolves are playable. ^^ As are vampires, house elves, mers, centaurs... so we've got a bunch covered already.
Giants are really the only other viable species I can think of. Maybe banshees? IDK.
This will probably sound crazy / might not work, but I'm the sort of sadistic person who would be intigued by the possibility of playing a boggart. Just to jump in and interrupt open threads and make people miserable. >=D That might not really be a feasable character idea, though, they're more of a concept than a character...

Werewolves are playable, they're considered human/part-human/usually human. Fairies ... in HP fairies aren't really much more than bugs. They have "limited intelligence" and everything implies they are not sentient, but rather intelligent animals. I've played animals before, but I'm not really sure that people would really be interested in playing fairies as they exist in the HP-verse. Giants are sentient, if very unintelligent, but it's specified that "[t]hey're not meant ter live together". I'm pretty sure we don't want them hanging around Hogsmeade. I'm not sure if banshees or boggarts would work ... again, they're not sentient. They're also both dark creatures ... boggarts can be repelled, but the defense specified for banshees is killing them and so ... um, unless you want your character killed by someone who is defending their character ... I think leprechauns and poltergeists could be interesting if there was any interest in them. They're both magical pranksters, and we know a lot more about poltergeists than leprechauns.

You know, boggarts kinda sound like they could be used in some sort of event? Not really won, but if there was a boggart account, and (say for April Fools or Halloween?) popped in to add a twist to any threads going on at the time? It just popped into my head when I saw "boggart".
On topic, though, I would love to play a veela, so them being added would be great! Aurora actually started out as an older half-veela character before I tweaked her for the board.
Poltergeists, leprechauns, and hags sound interesting too.

I've been on sites before that have an "NPC" account for general use... sort of like we do with the Daily Prophet. If you want a character that isn't played, you could PM that character's "reply" to the account and a link to where you wanted it posted and an admin/staff who ran the account would post it for you. So if you wanted to role-play a scene with a prostitute, and we didn't have any, instead of getting someone to create a prostitute they could just "play" her through the NPC account for that thread.
We could maybe do something like that with the boggart idea? If people are even interested in it. =P Maybe no one would even use it.

I don't know, but I personally think that Veela are definitely an idea. And ooh, Poltergeists... that's an idea, I'd love to play one. But those would probably be better off, as people have said, as contest prizes, because we don't want an abundance of poltergeists zooming around wreaking havoc. XD
As for the boggarts, it's intriguing but I don't know how I'd consider them playable, as it would be the character reacting to it that does it all anyway, because if you were the boggart all you'd get to do was wait around in whatever shape it says in the specific character's bio and, what, wait until they've Riddikulus'd you? What can a boggart do to someone if they don't know how to Riddikulus it?
