With the winter holidays over, classes had resumed just as normal. Violet had not had a very eventful holiday, which was perfectly fine with her. She would rather have a calm and mellow day than one that was filled with drama, gossip and angst. Not that she had days that were like that very often, if at all. She had not received much by way of Christmas gifts, but that did not matter much. She was rather used to such treatment, as she did not truly have anyone she was close enough to to expect anything special. Violet was, and always would be, a wallflower.

A wallflower that had the responsibility of preparing the students for their upcoming OWLs exam, in fact. There was a particular spell that she knew would be on the practical exam and had been meaning to teach a class on. Today was a good day to do it. She had spoken to the caretaker of the school earlier that morning and he had agreed to assist her in gathering an owl for each of the students to practice the spell on. It was a bit dangerous and probably messy, but Violet knew that her classes were rather boring on most days. She wanted the lesson to sink in - the only way to be sure of it was to make it interesting.

She had him assist her in placing an owl (in a cage of course) on each of the student's desks before the class had started. Now, she twiddled her wand between her fingers as she allowed her own owl, Puck, who was a rather small but spunky pygmy owl to roam around on her own desk.

Once the students took their seats, albeit a bit bewildered at finding a random owl a top their desk, she announced the lesson for the day, "Good morning class. With the Ordinary Wizarding Level Exams quickly approaching us, I need to be sure that you have knowledge of all of the spells that you could be asked to demonstrate. That being said, today, we are going to learn the Multicorfors charm - better known as the color change charm. I will demonstrate."

She pointed her wand toward Puck, who did not look at all perturbed by this, and muttered the spell. The owl changed from his earthy brown to a bright and brilliant shade of blue. A small hoot was his response before he proceeded to putter around and climb into Violet's empty teacup.

The redhead turned her attention back to the students, "Please read chapter forty seven before you attempt the spell. Once you have read it, you are free to practice the spell on the owl I have had placed on your desk. Please do not hesitate to ask for assistance from myself."

The key to good eavesdropping is not getting caught
With a groan, Antigone strolled into Charms class. She was not looking forward to the lesson and the fact there were owls on the desks indicating the likeliness that it would be a practical lesson did not cheer her in the slightest. Why were there owls anyway? Was it a transfiguration lesson suddenly? She wished it was.

She reluctantly sought a seat near the back and took out her charms book, a disinterested look upon her face. She hoped there wouldn't be an essay at the end of the lesson; that's all she needed. How was she expected to have a social life if they insisted on bombarding her with homework. She was certain the whole idea of extra work outside class hours was a conspiracy to make her suffer.

Tig rested her hand on her chin and stared as Miss Ollivander gave a demonstration. So they were making owls turn different colors? She couldn't see how she'd ever need to use that spell. Though it was likely she'd change her mind once she read about the uses of the spell in her book.

With a heavy sigh of exasperation, she begrudgingly opened her book and stared at the pages, yawning as she did. Hopefully some form of chaos would break out in the class and make it more entertaining. It probably didn't help that she was feeling rather uncooperative at present.

the true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination
Beatrice felt glad that classes had started again. Sure, she missed the Brownings and the incredible time she spent with them, but she also missed the evenings she would sit in front of the fireplace, writing down her potion's essay, or reading a book about famous wizards of the 14th century. Trixie still had some homework to do during her holidays but, she had managed to finish them just in two days, since the family was pretty much stuck under the snow thanks to that snow-storm which covered Hogsmeade under a white blanket for more than a week.

Trixie occupied a seat somewhere in the middle and took out a clean piece of parchent in front of her. With small, clear letters she wrote the title of the lesson and then, she did what Professor Ollivander insisted. Turning her book to the right page, she started reading slowly, underlining the parts she found most important from the whole text. She had been doing that even since she started her magica education at Hogwarts and it had helped her a lot when she wanted to study for exams.

After she finished reading the chapter, she started examining the owl she was going to work on today. It was a big, horned owl, with dark gray feathers and a rather sly look. Trixie didn't dare to look into the bird's eyes for too long, she had a feeling that it would get angry and try to attack her.

Trixie pointed at the bird with her rosy coloured wand and murmured the spell Professor Ollivander had said previously, with no particular colour in her head. The owl didn't change at all. Beatrice, after closing her eyes to concentrate for a while, she raised her hand and after she made sure that she was given permission to speak, she asked, " Should we have a particular colour in mind while doing the spell, Ms. Ollivander"

Luke entered the Charms classroom barely on time, his breathing heavy as he took the closest seat available near the door. He had nearly been late to class, having been talking about Quidditch with some of his fellow housemates before realizing he had to get all the way up from the dungeons to the Charms classroom in just a few minutes. He had been lucky that the caretaker had not caught him running.

He smiled at the eagle owl on his desk, which just gave a disgruntled hoot. He hadn't been paying very close attention to Miss Ollivander, more interested in the owl, until he saw the pygmy owl turn a shade of blue. He laughed quietly to himself, knowing laughing would probably result in a deduction of points, before taking out his Charms textbook.

Luke wasn't the fastest reader, and his fellow students were already attempting the spell before he finished. Closing the book with a sigh, he turned his attention back to the eagle owl that seemed to be giving him a mistrusting look.

"Don't worry, I only plan to change your color. It shouldn't hurt," he whispered before trying out the spell. He was pleased to see that it most of the owl had a light dusting of red. He had meant to turn it a Gryffindor scarlet, but at least he had some sort of result? He kept trying, but it seemed that no matter what he did, it only seemed to take on a hint of the color he was trying to achieve.

Sorcha MacFusty, or as she was better known, Pip, skipped into the Charms classroom and greeted the professor with a half hearted curtsy and with a spin as she plonked herself down next to Antigone, remembering her mothers words a little belatedly. She hadn't done anything untoward but she really should've conducted herself with more reserve and poise.

She grinned at her friend and then she noticed the owl. Her eyes grew wide and she pursed her lips.

"Hoo Hoo" She said seriously at the owl who eyed her suspiciously and started to preen its wing feathers. Pip scowled in disagreement was in the process of reaching out to grab the owl when the red haired professor informed her of their task. She grinned, widely at Antigone.

"Tig this looks like such fun!" She exclaimedand reached for her wand in her sleeve. She frowned when she found it absent and tried the other sleeve. No go there as well. She pouted and struggled to remember where she'd put it.

"Imagine what you could do with this spell. You could turn your hair different colours without having to use potions." Her shoe! She must've put it there. She stopped herself from diving under the table and instead her hand dived downwards to feel for the wood. Not her right ankle and not her left. She tilted her head to the right.

"Tig." She said quiet seriously. "Have you seen my wand?" She was sure she'd put it somewhere where she couldn't possibly loose it... but she had.

Again.

Tig was honestly glad for some company, even if Pip was a little difficult to not feel embarrassed around at times. Genuinely, she was quite fond of the scatty little thing and there was of course the fact that there was the potential to lead her astray rather easily. She watched skeptically as the other Slytherin girl skipped in and took the vacant seat next to her; at least someone was enthusiastic about the charms class.

Fun? Oh she disagreed, it seemed terribly dull to Antigone. At least that was what she thought until a sly smirk twitched at the corner of her mouth. Her musings of mischief were interrupted by an apparent misplacing of a wand. Tig rolled her eyes and sighed exasperatedly at the girl. Without giving a verbal response, she simply reached out and plucked it from the strands of hair that were entwined around it, not really thinking about whether it might hurt or not. "Voila. If you keep putting it there it might make all your hair fall out one day, you know," she teased with a smirk.

Brandishing her own wand, she finally turned to the feathered barn owl perched on their desk. "Pick a color," she demanded, waiting only a split second before flicking her wand at the owl and hoping for it to turn a nice shade of emerald green. It didn't. "Multicorfors!" A frown crept onto her face as she realized the spell hadn't work and all that had happened was the owl's white feathers seemed to have a slight green tinge to them, that or it was the effects of wishful thinking. Embarrassed for not having done it first time without fail, she cleared her throat and gave one more try. "Multicorfors!" This time more happened, though Tig wasn't too sure the owl was supposed to glow a nasty florescent green. The owl didn't seem too pleased either.

Violet watched closely as her students began their work. Puck hooted quietly at her, alerting her to his want for her attention. She stretched her hand out to him. He ignored it and flapped his wings twice in order to launch himself upward to land on her shoulder. From there, he proceeded to peck at the red wisps of her hair that had escaped from her bun.

Beatrice then asked a question.

Violet nodded, "Yes Miss Skye, you need to have a color in mind before proceeding." She walked through the aisles and commented on each student's performance as she passed them. The ones who were still reading their books she asked if they were alright with the material before moving on.

"Keep trying Mr. Poynter. Miss Baudelaire you need to enunciate and use your voice more strongly. Miss MacFusty, are you doing alright?" She asked with a quirked brow. It did not seem as if the girl had even started the lesson yet.

"Seeing as how the class seems to be having a bit of difficulty with this, the first person to manage to turn their owl to a bright hue of orange will earn their house ten points."

the true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination
As soon as Trixie received Ms Violet's answer, she started working on her owl. First, she needed a colour and Trixie figured it would be better if she used a colour she liked, because the spell would probably work better that way. Trixie had a secret love for warm colours, like red, orange and yellow, but she rarely used them in her outfits. Judging by her clothes, one would assume that Trixie's favourite colour was blue. Beatrice mostly wore her school robes, even if she had a lot of clothes to choose from now. She just wanted her dresses to match the colour of her robes, so she preferred to wear blue when she was at school.

Beatrice turned her eyes to Violet as she announced their challenge. She was attempting this spell for a first time, so she was not sure if she would manage to make her owl orange so quickly. Besides, she wouldn't help but feel guilty whenever she managed to complete something before everyone else. Trixie was sure that this was the main reason she didn't have so many friends. Still, she figured that these ten points wouldn't benefit only her, but the whole Ravenclaw house.

She closed her eyes and tried to picture a bright orange colour, similar to one of her dresses. It was similar to the colour of the orange's peel, just a few tones brighter. Once she made sure that she had memorized the colour, she pointed her wand to the owl and murmured " Multicorfors"

The owl didn't turn excactly as she wanted it. It was indeed orange, but not bright orange. Trixie looked around the classroom, trying to see if anyone else had managed to make his or her owl orange. None yet, or at least she didn't manage to spot anyone. Trixie, though, was sure that one of the older students would surely achieve this easier than her.

She remembered what Ms Ollivanger said to Antigone about her voice and figured that it was probably the reason the owl didn't have the colour she wanted. " Multicorfors" Trixie said with the strongest and most confident voice she could make.

The owl had now a bright orange colour, not exactly the colour she wanted it to have, but still bright. Trixie, though was not satisfied. If she couldn't make the owl have the colour she wanted it to have then she hadn't mastered the spell yet.

exquisite clutter
Pip winced as several strands of her long brown hair that had been wrapped around her wand got caught as her friend pulled the magical instrument out. Her hand flew up to her head to make sure that that the action wouldn't send the rest of hair out of it's pins... until she realized it was a futile effort.

She changed her arms movement into a stretch as her long straight hair tumbled down her back. As far as she was aware it wasn't really a problem anyway, after all she was still young and her mother hadn't told her that she absolutely had to start wearing her hair up, and she didn't have to worry about a hat, or her hair looking too messy - it rarely tangled after all... though she vaguely remembered something about it being rude to fix her hair in public. She let it fall indifferently and stared at Tig with wide eyes at the suggestion that her wand might make her hair fall out.

"It would really do that?" She whispered in horror and stared at her owl who ducked its head under its wing to pull out more tiny loose feathers. She conciously ran a hand through her scalp trying to make sure she couldn't find any bald spots. She jumped at the the teachers voice and realized... rather guiltily that everybody else had already started using the colour change spell.

Tentatively she pointed her wand at the bird and the owl poked its head out from under its wing to fix her with a beady stare. She fought the urge to wiggle back into her seat because she... she was a MacFusty. MacFusty's weren't scared of anything. Dragons were mere obstacles in the path of a MacFusty. She did however scoot back until her chair hit the desk behind her.

She pointed her wand at the bird and said, as confidently as she could "Multoforos" The bluish sparks made the owls eyes widen and Pip grinned as the owl disappeared. She had done it! She might not have changed the owls colour but she'd made it turn invisible. She scuttled back into her desk and the owl skwarked and flew out of the hole in her desk to land on her shoulder. Pip stared at it feeling glum as more holes appeared in her desk and along the role of tables. Books, pencils and other things disappeared in the holes in the wood as the holes appeared down her table.

Pip stared in incomprehension. What had she done wrong? It was a colour spell not a.. not a spell for holes. Tentatively she raised her hand.

"Lovely, Miss Skye!" Violet said encouragingly, "Such a pretty hue of orange you have chosen, as well. I am certain that the art professor would be quite proud. Ten points to the house of Ravenclaw." Secretly, she imagined the blue jewels in the great hall glittering as the stack grew just a tinge higher. She hoped Ravenclaw would win the house cup this year, if only because she was a loyal Ravenclaw alumnus herself.

Her attention was turned to Miss MacFusty's desk - or, what was left of it. There were holes in it. How that had happened, Violet wasn't entirely sure, but she knew she ought to put a stop to it. For one, she wasn't sure where the holes led to (as she hadn't seen the owl disappear into one) nor was she positive that the holes would be limited to appearing in the desk.

Violet immediately approached the desk and told the students as calmly as she could (for she was slightly nervous that a hole would appear that was large enough to swallow an unsuspecting student), "Class, please move away from Miss MacFusty's desk and over to the other side of the classroom. As quickly as you can please. Miss MacFusty, this includes you and your owl. Be careful not to touch anything."

After everyone was cleared away, she pointed her wand at the increasing number of holes and muttered a spell. Nothing happened. She tried another, and another until finally, the holes stopped reproducing. She then used another spell to patch them up and return the furniture to normal.

"It's all right now," She assured her students and waved them back toward their seats, "Miss MacFusty, if you could try to enunciate the spell, that might help from it happening again. Try again dear, Multicorfors."

Trixie sligthly blushed when she was awarded the house points. But what made her prouder was Professor Ollivander's comment, that her arts professor was proud. Trixie never concidered herself an artist, in fact, she concidered herself one of the worse students in arts class. She had a stable hand and a good eye for colours, but her shapes were always too sharp and she didn't really enjoy painting them anyway.

She started writing down notes, when all the class turned towards Ms MacFusty. It seemed ironic for Beatrice that the girl's older sister was the Head Girl and yet, the younger MacFusty couldn't even pronounce the spell properly. Trixie could only guess that Sorcha MacFusty was just more talented with other things, like clothing.

Luckily, Professor Ollivander managed to fix the furniture before there was more panic around the room. Some students were already making noise, pretending they were shocked, even if Trixie was sure that they just did it to make the situation more tense.

The Ravenclaw continued writing her notes once everything was alright. She re-read the part about the colours in her book and then tried the spell on the owl again.

Of course Lysistrata had already read the chapter required for the current lesson, so while the professor demonstrated the charm they were to use, Lysistrata took her assigned owl out of its cage with a practiced gloved hand—not that her thin black gloves would protect her from talons or beak if the owl got unruly. It was a common barn owl, and a younger one if L didn’t miss her mark; perfectly capable of flying but not quite mature. As it turned its head to look around, partially unfurling its wings, Lysistrata transferred the owl to her stack of books and tickled her fingers into the soft feathers on its belly.

When they were finally given the go ahead, Lysistrata watched a few of the others for several minutes before picking her wand up from her desk and picturing a bright, vibrant shade of green, flourished her wand at the owl. ”Multicorfors.”

Starting at the point on the owl’s breast where she’d pointed her wand, he turned a crisp green color and ruffled his feathers. Lysistrata frowned; that hadn’t been the shade she’d been hoping for. This was more of a waxy leaf green when she’d been hoping for a vibrant grassy green. But at least she’d managed it. She was just about to attempt orange, as Professor Ollivander had suggested when a large hole appeared in her desk and her books fell through. With an indignant screech, her green owl scrabbled at the desk, his wings flapping until he managed to climb awkwardly onto the desk.

Scowling, Lysistrata scooped up her own and tucked him against her robe as she stood and moved away from her place. Looking down the row, she saw Sorcha MacFusty with her hand raised and her lips pursed slightly as she absently stroked the green feathers of her owl’s wing. The distraction of course, had caused the points to go to Ravenclaw; if she hadn’t been interrupted, surely she would’ve been able to manage a hideous orange hue before that third year! Shaking her head slightly, she rescued an abandoned boogey-colored screech owl from the desk and with an owl on each arm, moved to the other side of the classroom with the others.

As she stood there with the others and watched the Professor at work, the screech owl climbed to her shoulder and began cleaning his feathers animatedly while the barn owl on her arm watched the gathered students and their rainbow-colored owls intently. As she waited for things to be set right, L pondered how she might be able to use this charm on her collection of Jobberknolls back home. The ever growing flock would be glorious in varying jewel tones. Yes, once she returned she would have emerald and ruby and sapphire Jobberknolls along with amethyst too! Perhaps, if she were lucky the colors would stick and she’d be the first to have multi-colored Jobberknolls.

When Professor Ollivander finally finished fixing the desktops, Lysistrata had half a mind to make the girl pick her books up from under the desk but instead settled for staring at the girl as she passed, her eyes filled with animosity. Once she was settled into her seat again, she found herself with two owls and a neighbor looking at her warily as though they wanted to say something but weren't quite sure if they should. Lysistrata ignored them and using a levitating charm they'd learned a few years before, gathered her books back onto her desk and utilized them as a perch for the barn owl again. Lifting her wand she tried the charm once more. "Multicorfors."

This time the feathers turned into a rich shade of purple and a small smile quivered on the girl's lips. She did rather like purple

Pip tried not to blush as she scurried away from what was left of her desk though the owl, not prepared for the sudden movement took her ear inits beak and bit down. She winced but the owl let go as soon as she came to a halt on the other side of the room. She watched the girls who had done the spell correctly, and Miss Ollivander who fixed the badly done spell, enviously.

How she wished that she could do things like that and not be so.. so stupid. This was one of those times that she wished that she were as bright as Una... though maybe that was aiming to high. Maybe as smart as one of her cousins then.

She returned to her seat feeling somewhat subdued and sat back down. She nudged the owl off her shoulder and while it reluctantly didn't move it eventually fluttered back onto her desk.

She nodded in agreement to the Professor and aimed her wand at the owl which eyed her nervously.

"Multicorfors." She made sure to enunciate properly at a little blue spark flew from her want. She stared at the owl and the owl stared back at her in mutual surprise as its wings were tinged rose pink... but what stood out the most, especially to Pip were the fact that is scaly legs were now a more noticeably pink. She was so proud of herself. She chose not to notice that there was a rather distinctive coloured line between the top half and bottom half of the bird.

The key to good eavesdropping is not getting caught
Tig scowled as she was corrected; she didn't like being shown up as wrong, especially by a professor, it was humiliating. What was even more embarrassing, however, was when the table suddenly started sprouting holes and leaped back away from it, almost falling backwards over her chair. Luckily her wand was in her hand at the time so she managed to save that from falling through the desk which was now looking more like a piece of Swiss cheese than a desk. "Pip! Tu es si stupide!" she cursed as she managed to steady herself and pull away from the self-destructing objects.

Thankfully - though she wouldn't be thanking her for it - Professor Ollivander saved the table and corrected Pip's mistake. Tig hesitantly sat down again and summoned her belonging back onto the desk from the mess they had made on the floor beneath. Except for her ink. Her ink bottle had smashed on the floorboards beneath leaving a dark stain on the wood. Sighing exasperatedly at the mess, she decided to ignore it and surmised that she could purchase more ink on the next Hogsmeade trip.

Rolling her eyes at Pip's attempt at changing the owl's feathers, she butted in. "Multicorfors!" Unfortunately having just spoken French, the change between languages made her pronunciation come out wrong and instead of turning orange, the creature suddenly started growing a long beard. A long, luminescent beard. Irritated, she repeated the spell and though this time she pronounced it perfectly, the owl turned a bright green but the beard remained. Was it still a success even if the owl had a beard?

It seemed that there was some improvement in the classroom. Some were able to do the spell immediately, while others struggled. Luckily, there were no more mysterious vanishing holes conjured and half of the owl had managed to be turned a shade of pink. Another owl grew a beard, which was rather odd, but not entirely unimaginable. Violet decided to let it slide, as a beard was not irreversible. Besides, the owl seemed to rather enjoy it.

"Now that you have had some practice with the charm, I'd like you to get out a piece of parchment and a quill. We'll be making a list of the many different ways we can put this spell to use. The first half of the list we'll do in class, but the last half I'll expect you to do as homework to be turned in by next class period." It was a treat in Violet's eyes, as she usually ended class with an essay that was due. A small break in writing was quite a reward.

The redhead waited until everyone was settled into their seats before she continued, "My idea for our list would be to change the color of our ink. You can change it to red or blue, or perhaps green or purple and wouldn't need to purchase each color individually." She waved her wand at the blackboard that was at the front of the classroom. The word "ink" was neatly written out in white chalky letters.

"Does anyone have another idea we could add to our list?"
