Necessity makes even the timid brave
She hadn't been terribly surprised. Dismay would be a better description of her mental state as she had become increasingly aware that she was rapidly getting sicker again. Although it was far quicker than before. Maud had been weak enough but it had been under a week since she had taken to full time bed rest again and she only felt worse and worse by the day. As if she hadn't wasted away enough, she had lost even more weight and truly looked how she felt. Her coughing had grown worse, or at least they felt far more painful than they had only two weeks earlier.

As it was at present, she was shivering with fever. She knew it was getting close, that it would only be a matter of time before she could fight the disease any further. She didn't want to give up but she had little to no strength left to do anything but go where the disease led her. She was not currently unconscious, though she felt tired enough that sleep would be a blessing, she laid in bed coated in a layer of cold sweat from the fever, the lively spark of life in her eyes almost gone completely, replaced by a dull listless expression.

Maud might be rather oblivious to the goings on outside of her room (and to some extent inside her room), but she could still sense the mood in the house. Perhaps teetering on the edge of giving up and fighting and her leaning towards the former had triggered it or maybe there was something different about her that day that made the atmosphere more... more hectic, as if something were happening or being prepared for. She couldn't tell and she hadn't yet summoned up enough energy to be interested enough to inquire.

She transferred from her side to her back, her breathing having grown increasingly difficult on her side. Maud was only partially aware of quite how labored her breathing sounded, she more aware and concerned with how difficult it actually was to breathe. There was company in the room with her, at least one person, she was sure. She was glad for the company, she didn't want to be alone, she didn't want to die alone.

Eze sat on the floor next to her bed, eyes closed and neck arched over the side of it. He hadn't given up yet, but he was extremely tired from encouraging Maud and teetering on the edge of sleep. For a while he had been starting every time someone in the house made a noise, but now he hadn't moved for a while. As Maud turned over on his side he gradually slumped over, eventually ending up on the floor in the fetal position in a light sleep.

His arm moved to cover his face and his breathing deepened as he gradually ended up wedging himself partially under the bed to the point where he was practically a piece of furniture in the room. If he had been conscious he would have hoped no one stepped on his arm, which was hanging out from under the bed and sprawled across the floor.

ooc: feel free to step on eze because he should probably be awake soon

Poor Maud Aesalon. Violet had gotten news that her ex-coworker (however briefly) was quite bedridden. She had heard that the frail woman would not last past the New Year. Being the charitable and compassionate person that she was, the Charms professor felt it necessary that she go and visit the woman and offer her support. The anxious bit of her cautioned her against the visit. What if she caught whatever it was that Maud had? What if she were next? Oh, she didn't want to die! Not yet! She had her book to write!

With this internal argument going on, the selfless side won out. Violet dressed warmly and after sending a note, she apparated to the young woman's doorstep. Once she was let in, she was lead to the bedroom where Maud was. Unaware that she held her breath, the redhead stepped over the threshold and into (what her mind told her) the lair of death itself. She earnestly worried that Maud would die during Violet's visit - what was she to do then? Surely, people would blame her for Maud's death? She'd already been blamed for her own mothers. People would see her as the bringer of death and she would never get invited anywhere ever again. It would be quite tragic.

Hence why her visit with Maud would be short and sweet. Probably more the former, than the latter.

Violet quietly stepped up to Maud's bedside, unaware that there was another person in the room - under the bed even - and managed to step on the man's fingers with the heel of her shoe as she leaned forward to greet the sickly woman, "Miss Aesalon, it is I, Violet Ollivander that has come to visit you."

Necessity makes even the timid brave
Maud's eyes stung and burned as though she hadn't slept in months but she managed to focus them long enough to see roughly who she was being spoken to by. Visitors were nice, she thought. She just wished she could make conversation of some sort - even though she had never really been one to involve herself in long talkative conversations before. "Very... kind... Nice... to see... you," she managed to force out, shutting her eyes at the pain brought on by the simple process of talking.

A sudden thought occurred to her that she was perhaps dreaming or hallucinating for some reason; since when did she entertain visitors? In all her years, she had had very few visitors. Doing her best to ignore the excruciating ache of her head due to fever, she took a deep breath before speaking again. "Are... you... real?" The question was would a figment of her imagination and therefore a product of hallucination reply truthfully or not. And if so, how could she tell? Oh it was all far too confusing for her, her head already hurt with fever it didn't need to hurt with complex thought processes as well.

Quite without warning - though she had enough time to turn her face the other way - she coughed violently a few times.

Will burst in, eyes wide, hoping that it wasn't true. Maud simply could not be dying, not when he had finally decided to make her his bride. Certainly he still had to speak to her eldest brother, but there were currently more important matters ...

Like the fact that Maud was laying at death's door. Grasping the door frame, Will stared at the tiny woman lying in bed and looking as though she might perish at any moment. With only eyes for her, Will did not even register that there were others in the room. While he managed not to run into Miss Ollivander or any of the furniture (both of which he noticed equally), he kicked the sleeping man on the floor as he made his way to the bedside.

"Maud?" he asked softly, his voice strained and tender at the same time, eyes locked on her to the exclusion of all else. She was so ill, so frail ... but she simply had to pull through. If she did not, Will was not sure he would be able to keep from blaming himself for her death. After all, he had repeatedly interrupted her recovery with his visits, and even taken her out to see High Street on the eve of the blizzard.

Ezekial was jolted awake by Violet's foot on his hand and yanked it back under the bed. He wasn't quite willing to get up yet, and he couldn't quite bring himself to yank his limbs further under the bed. He listened to Maud's sick voice and grimaced... God, she had to ask if the woman was real. He played with the hem of his jacket, feeling a bit like a trespasser, until Will came in and kicked him.

Eze grimaced and slid out from the opposite side of the bed. He stood up and brushed himself off. He leaned against the wall without saying anything and fiddled with the hem of his jacket again, a mortified expression on his face.

You're not allowed to die, he thought. He was not okay with this. The desire to run off and get very drunk was strong, but unfortunately not a possibility due to the blizzard and the fact that he'd never forgive himself if Maud died when he was intoxicated.

"Oh, erm, I... I believe so.. that I'm.. I'm quite real," She stuttered uncomfortably, certain that Maud was in her last few hours. If she were unable to determine which was real and which was not, she truly was a goner. The woman stepped away from the bed slightly, afraid that she would catch the death. Or worse - that she would cause Maud's death.

Mr. Rutledge appeared, though he seemed unaware of Violet's presence. This was just fine with the redhead, as she did not want any attention to be on her. If Maud passed while Violet was there, she would most certainly be blamed for being cursed. Another man appeared - though this one was from the floor on the other side of the bed. Had he been sleeping there the whole time? It was a rather awkward situation. He ought to at least have had a cot made over there, rather than sleeping on the floor like some poor man.

Violet removed herself from the center of the room and settled herself in a chair in the corner. Unsure of what to do to pass the time of the visit, she fiddled with the threading of her skirt and studied the grooves in the floor.

A faint twitch at the corners of her mouth were all there was to show that she had understood Miss Ollivander's words. "Good..." she managed to croak in response, glad that she wasn't hallucinating. Unless of course she was and her hallucinations were trying to convince her otherwise.

She could just about process the sound of her door opening, confusion seeping into the tired corners of her mind as to who it may be. The voice that spoke her name was familiar, familiar and a very welcome sound. Only, it would be were there not a stirring ache of something... Was it guilt? Guilt or some other emotion she could not label as of yet.

"Mis... Mister... Rutledge..." Her eyes didn't want to open for they stung so very much but she forced herself to do so, to at least make sure he was there and as real as Violet had been whether she truly was there or a very vivid hallucination. After all, if she were to breathe her last soon then she wanted to have seen him one last time. "It is... good... to see you... a final time..." She tried to smile though it was very small and rather more pained of an expression than she had been aiming for. "Forgive me..." She wanted him to forgive her for dying on him, for dying on him and having encouraged their acquaintance when she was nearing expiration. She couldn't have known in advance but she could still feel guilt on account of it.

"You're not going to die," Will said forcefully. He was not going to allow this -- there had to be something that he could do to prevent it from happening. He had just recently received permission from her eldest brother to propose, and if she were to die before he had the chance ...

Reaching out without any real care for his own health, Will took one of Maud's hands in both of his own. "You are still going to recover, Maud," he said gently, hoping that his words were true. He could not have found love again only to have it ripped away once more. At least Alice had left him their little Jane, the little dear who looked so much like her mother. If Maud died now, he would have nothing of her to keep her close. "You've just gotten a little worse. You will be better tomorrow."

exquisite clutterElladora Black stiffly followed the woman down the hallway, quite unable to decide whether the woman was a maid to the Aesalons or Maud's widow mother. It must be terrible, Elladora thought, to be on the verge of losing a daughter after her husband. She could not imagine loosing any of her family members nor could she imagine a life without them. Phineas's comforting reliance, Isla's silent rebellion, Sirius's... aptitude... and Ursula's.... well Ursula was Ursula. She had recieved the note months ago, the note announcing Maud's predicament. It practically dared her to resume her research into finding a cure for tuberculosis! She had let her research into the disease fall into disuse over the past year due to a personal lack of interest. The research had been a welcome distraction from other problems that she simply could not fix and she had a potion... which should... possibly... maybe work. It wasn't that she was inconfident in it - it had of course passed her rigorous testing and the trials...she just wasn't entirely confident about it. She would've liked more time to test and experiment with the experimental potion series but that was something she did not have. Time. Time was not on her side as as they approached the sickroom door and she stealed herself and entered, following behind the woman. Her steps were confident and her voice hit the right notes only moments after she heard the words of William Ruteledge. His presence here aroused her curiousity - it wasn't the first time afterall that she had seen the man being overly intimate in Maud's presence. Her eyes flickered over the other rooms occupants, and the other faces that she recognized. "Of course she will." tag: here | outfit: here | notes: heremade by Emily exclusively for Charming

Necessity makes even the timid brave
Despite the fact she felt almost completely devoid of energy, Maud noticed the prickling sensation behind her eyes which felt more like stinging and burning than it would have normally. She wished with all her heart that Will was right and that she would be better but she could feel the opposite. She was certain she could almost feel the icy grip of death, though that could very well have been a hallucination due to her fever. As much as she wanted to pull through, to see the sun rise and set next week, she couldn't help but be certain she would not. She felt so listless, so lethargic and that was just without the immense pain in both her chest, head and the general ache throughout her entire body.

A few weak little tears managed to materialize in the corners of her eyes, slowly leaking down the corner of her face and leaving a salty damp trail in their wake. She opened her mouth a fraction to attempt an answer, to attempt to somehow tell him that she was sorry, that she wished him well... Maybe even to murmur an 'I love you' of sorts that she didn't have the energy to feel embarrassed about but the sound of another person entering and another familiar voice breaking her concentrating to form a fluid sentence. Maud couldn't understand. She simply had to be imagining them all for they were all so hideously misled. She could feel herself succumbing and yet they seemed to think she was going to survive the night. Maud wasn't really sure she wanted to; every breath was agony and laying in bed was not a comfortable experience, especially with her dramatic weight loss. If she could find the energy to move, she would have struggled to get comfortable anyway.

But really, what was Elladora Black doing visiting her? She was certainly delusional now. Did that mean that none of them real? Will? Violet - despite her confirmation of the opposite? She couldn't tell anymore! "Wh- why... why... must... delusions... plagued... delusions... plaguing..." Her words came out far more incoherent and directionless than she had intended. Her tears increased as she let out a small, weak sob; she was so confused! "Why... must... tor...menting..."

sicknessThe woman who would've liked to be a medical researcher, a healer or a mediwitch but who had to content herself with being simple a school bound healer closed her eyes and counted to three to ensure that she didn't show any other emotion. She had to bite back the attempt to scold Maud for being overdramatic, because really for a woman who spent her life being shy and scuttling away she did have a flare for it. She also buried her reflex to roll her eyes. If this were one of the volunteers for her treatments she'd simply have scolded them and held their nose until they had ingested all the contents of the vial... but she had skipped that step and brought what she hoped to be a viable cure to the Aesalon's house and such behaviour really wasn't done. Especially not with all these people crowded around her bedside like the girl was holding a party that would end in her death. "Don't be stupid Ms. Aesalon. I'm not a figment of your imagination. I'm here to help you. I am here because I may have a cure for your condition..." She left the sentence hanging.. her fingers grasping the cool glass of her potion vial. She'd have to make more of course if the first treatment was successful.. and there was a liklihood that it wouldn't be... but she had done her research and it should work. tag: here | outfit: here | notes: heremade by Emily exclusively for Charming

Madam Black's arrival was a relief. As intimidating as Will found the woman, she was an excellent healer who worked at Hogwarts more out of a sense of propriety than any lack of skill -- or, at least that was how Will perceived matters.

There were not many people that Will would have believed if they said they might have a cure for consumption; Madam Black topped that short list.

"You see? Everything shall be fine, Maud. You will be recovered before you know it."

Necessity makes even the timid brave
It seemed her delusions were rapidly turning in the direction of a nightmare that was far too real and painful for her liking. There was a gentle trickling sensation at the corners of her eyes and she could finally tell that she was crying but the tears felt boiling hot and stingy, as though someone had boiled sea water and replaced her tears with it. She could feel her pulse quicken slightly but it hurt more than anything and then the room started swaying.

The word 'cure' caught her attention but it was a preoccupied sort of attention. Maud attempted to say something but it came out as a cross between a groan and a whimper instead. How could there be a cure? What cure could possibly save her now? Wasn't she too far gone to be saved? It was the worst she had ever felt in her entire life.

Her hand still in Will's, she gave it the briefest, most tiny of squeezes for she could not do much better before she passed out.

sicknessWhat Elladora would've liked to do would've been to throw the men out of the room at that instant. They had no business here nor did Miss Violet Ollivander. She had serious doubts about that woman, as a teacher or otherwise, but she knew that such brisk treatment would probably not be welcome. Her brother looked horrible, touching that he cared so much, but still quite horrible, William Ruteledge and his hand needed slapping and she avoided looking at Violet. She could make excuses for Maud's behaviour but found that she could not make the same for Violet. Somebody who was a competent as Violet had no business being so... so... bothersome. Her eyes found the hand that the two of them grasped and she felt particularly stupid. She knew she wasn't the best matchmaker in the world - she preferred brute force, yelling and screaming... and when that didn't work charms and potions... but obviously this was a situation easily solved. She coughed. "I have a potion, Miss. Aesalon. Take it twice daily for the next fee--" She realized that Maud was passed out and stopped. Her jaw tightened and she stowed the potion vial back inside her purse and switched it for a small blue crystal vial which she made care to shake and open far away from her body and close to Maud's nose. She let the blue perfume escape its bottle in waves of scent that she could physically see. Her nose twitched from the strong repugnant scent of ammonia mixed with nettle. It usually did the trick. If Maud of course didn't gain consciousness she'd have to look for other means or administering the potion. tag: here | outfit: here | notes: heremade by Emily exclusively for Charming
